Gerbil Health

Observe what all your gerbils are doing at least once a day: If a gerbil is huddled in a corner all by itself, its fur is all bedraggled and it looks miserable, then something is definitely wrong and you should seek immediate veterinary treatment. If the gerbil does not immediately seize on it and eat it, then you should be very worried. Hold your gerbils close to your ear: If a gerbil makes a clicking or rasping noise, it probably has a chest infection. Examine your gerbil’s nose: Sore noses are one of the most common gerbil health problems. Examine your gerbil’s teeth: Often the first time an owner realizes there is a tooth problem, is when the gerbil rapidly loses weight but otherwise appears healthy.

The gerbil cannot gnaw and the remaining teeth may grow too long and require trimming. Examine your gerbil’s tail: It comes as something of a shock when your gerbil suddenly emerges minus half of its tail. The same thing can happen if you pick up the gerbil by the tip of its tail or if the gerbil gets its tail trapped underneath something. Within a few days, the bone just withers away and the gerbil is left with half a tail. Examine how your gerbil moves around: A tendency to go round in circles or hold its head in a tilted position suggest an inner ear problem.

Once a gerbil has developed a head-tilt, it will never go away. In the unlikely event of your gerbil having diarrhea, your nose will soon alert you to the problem.

Ticks can spread diseases to both people and pets: Lyme disease, ehrlichiosis, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, anaplasmosis, tularemia, and babesiosis. Antifreeze is extremely dangerous to pets because most types appear appetizing to dogs. Antifreeze poisoning is one of the most common forms of poisoning in pets. Even if the chemicals don’t poison your pet, large amounts of fertilizer could result in gastrointestinal or pancreatic problems. Snail bait can be a major risk for dogs and cats and is a more common source of poisoning than you may expect.

Just like people, some dogs can have an allergic reaction to bee stings, especially if stung by multiple bees. Talk to your vet about how you can keep your pup safe from bee stings, and what to do if your dog is stung. Your dog may be accustomed to taking walks over ice covered lakes, rivers and ponds. Horse dewormers often contain ivermectin; it’s also used in small doses to kill parasites in dogs. Toxicity can occur if a dog is given an excessive dose of the medication.

If you have any questions or concerns about spring pet hazards, you should always visit or call your vet – they are your best resource to ensure the health and well-being of your pets. Thank you to Pet Health Network for sharing with us this great info.

Bigger Road Veterinary Center

Make sure to stop by Bigger Road’s booth at Lift Your Leg Run/Walk for Strays, on Saturday, June 7th, 2014! We will be promoting our Healthy Pet Project, a program exclusively for Bigger Road clients that includes nutrition and fitness counseling from certified counselors. SICSA’s Lift Your Leg Run and Walk for Strays helps thousands of animals annually by raising critical funding for their care and adoption. Each year, over 700 people join together and raise money, run and walk in support of companion animals. Since 1976, Bigger Road Veterinary Clinic has provided care for pets and their parents in.

Kettering, OH. In 2009, we opened a second location in Springboro, allowing us to help even more pets in the Dayton area. Bigger Road’s mission is the help pets live the longest, healthiest, happiest lives possible. We know that this is best achieved through whole life care – not just quality medical care, but also attending to a pet’s nutrition, behavior, and lifestyle needs. The Healthy Pet Project was designed to provide this whole life care and strengthen the bond between people and their pets.

Certified coaches work with clients and their pets to develop a solid nutrition plan and a schedule of activities to improve or maintain overall fitness. Fun group activities bring clients and pets together to share their successes and stay motivated. Along with regular preventive care, the guidance provided by our coaches helps ensure that your pet stays healthy and happy. We are happy to answer questions about the Healthy Pet Project by e-mail or on our web site, or call us anytime at 435-3262.

Pet Digestive Enzymes

The two main types of enzymes most important to your pet’s well-being are metabolic and digestive enzymes. Digestive enzymes work in the stomach and intestines to break down the food your pet eats. If your pet consumes mostly processed or cooked food, she likely receives little or no enzymes from her food, and must rely on her body to manufacture many or all of the enzymes she needs. Second, producing these extra enzymes may be robbing animals of precious enzymes for metabolic functions elsewhere in their bodies. Here’s the problem with this ramped up need for extra enzymes: As your pet ages, production of enzymes declines.

Raw food certainly supplies more digestive enzymes than processed pet food, but don’t be fooled, many animals consuming raw foods still benefit from enzymes. Supplementing with enzymes helps ensure she can completely digest her food without dipping into that fragile bank of metabolic enzymes. Giving enzymes in between meals ensures the enzymes won’t be utilized for digestive purposes. In my opinion, for carnivorous pets, plant or vegetarian enzymes aren’t as efficient for digestive purposes as are animal-sourced enzymes. These are the same enzymes I recommend to my patients’ owners – and the enzymes I feed to my own pets.

Fungal enzymes are just not as perfect a match for our furry friends’ bodies as pancreatic enzymes. A: Because our pancreatic enzymes are animal-sourced, their ability to withstand stomach acidity on their way to the small intestine is naturally much greater than with plant or fungal enzymes.

Holiday Safety Tips

The holiday season is upon us, and many pet parents plan to include their furry companions in the festivities. As you gear up for the holidays, it is important to try to keep your pet’s eating and exercise habits as close to their normal routine as possible. Please be sure to steer pets clear of the following unhealthy treats, toxic plants and dangerous decorations. Oh, Christmas Tree: Securely anchor your Christmas tree so it doesn’t tip and fall, causing possible injury to your pet. Stagnant tree water is a breeding ground for bacteria, and your pet could end up with nausea or diarrhea should he imbibe.

Avoid Mistletoe & Holly: Holly, when ingested, can cause pets to suffer nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. Pets may burn themselves or cause a fire if they knock candles over. A wire can deliver a potentially lethal electrical shock and a punctured battery can cause burns to the mouth and esophagus, while shards of breakable ornaments can damage your pet’s mouth and digestive tract. Pets can join the festivities in other fun ways that won’t lead to costly medical bills. Careful with Cocktails: If your celebration includes adult holiday beverages, be sure to place your unattended alcoholic drinks where pets cannot get to them.

House Rules: If your animal-loving guests would like to give your pets a little extra attention and exercise while you’re busy tending to the party, ask them to feel free to start a nice play or petting session. Noisy poppers can terrify pets and cause possible damage to sensitive ears.

When a Pet Dies

The joy of owning a pet goes hand-in-hand with the heartbreak of losing one, whether because of old age, illness, or an accident. Your pet may be the one your child looks to for comfort and companionship when ill or feeling unpopular or upset. One of the most difficult parts about losing a pet may be breaking the bad news to kids. If your pet is very old or has a long illness, consider talking to kids before the death happens. The pet will die peacefully, without feeling hurt or scared.

If asked what happens to the pet after it dies, draw on your own understanding of death, including, if relevant, the viewpoint of your faith. Like anyone dealing with a loss, kids usually feel a variety of emotions besides sadness after the death of a pet. They might experience loneliness, anger if the pet was euthanized, frustration that the pet couldn’t get better, or guilt about times that they were mean to or didn’t care for the pet as promised. Don’t feel compelled to hide your own sadness about losing a pet. Write a prayer together or offer thoughts on what the pet meant to each family member.

For kids, losing a pet who offered love and companionship can be much harder than losing a distant relative. Let your child know that while the pain will go away, the happy memories of the pet will always remain.

67 N Reino Rd, Newbury Park, CA

498-7600 Part of the joys of being a new puppy parent is the countless hours spent staring at aisles of pet stores. Much like the Healthy Pet on T.O. Blvd, this Newbury Park version, is also well stocked, with kind staff and a good selection. Healthy pet is awesome! I just recently got a kitten and since I got my kitten, I’ve been going to Healthy pet for his food and whatever else he needs.

My kitten is like my kid and I want him to be taken care with the best I can possibly give him and healthy pet has been a big part of that. I have been going to Healthy Pet and the NP store for 5-6 years very faithfully, enough that the owner recognized me when I would go in for food every couple of months. I love to support the small businesses in town, but I’m afraid I’ve just started using Amazon and the local chain pet stores now because of lousy customer service and petty-ness about store policies. My latest customer service mishap had to do with the coupons Healthy Pet has out in the mailers and things. Healthy pet newbury park is a great pet store it means a lot to me to be here as it used to be Josh’s pet store where I’ve adopted 3 puppies and now I come to healthy PET’s store.

I Drive 30 miles to get here just to come by dog food I highly recommend this pet store. Great products! knowledgable staff! Great prices! Excellent healthy food selections!

Pet friendly! Yuck! The two bags of food we bought had tons of BUGS in them! Beware of this place! There are much much better pet stores in the NP & TO area!

I will drive the five miles to the big chain pet store over using this store that is less than a mile away.

Tulsa Exotic Pet Veterinarian

If you own an exotic pet in Tulsa such as birds, reptiles, ferrets, rabbits, hedgehogs and other pocket pets, it is good to know where to go when they become sick or injured. Establishing a good working relationship with a Tulsa veterinarian can be a challenge for any pet owner, but is a special challenge for the exotic pet owner. The exotic pet owner must find a vet who is willing to see their pet, knows something about their pet, and has the facilities, equipment and materials to treat their pet. Not all vets see exotics, and not all the ones who say they do have the know how. At All Creatures Veterinary Hospital in Tulsa, Oklahoma we have been taking care of exotic pets and have been accepting exotic pet referrals from other veterinarians for many years.

We have veterinarians and staff who have the experience and the training to take care of your special pet. We receive exotic pet clients from all over Northeast Oklahoma as well as Arkansas, Missouri and Kansas. Mark Setser, DVM provides care for all kinds of exotic pets. It is important that you bring your pet in for annual exams. It is very easy to not recognize symptoms of illness in your exotic pet when your pet exhibits them.

Often, exotic pets don’t get to the veterinarian in time and sometimes that can result in a very sad ending. We can give your pet a full exam, monitor your animal’s weight, detect slight onset of disease, give you nutritional, behavioral, and husbandry education, and develop a relationship with you and your exotic pet that may one day save its life.

Burr Ridge Veterinary Clinic

A graying muzzle, increasing cloudiness in the eyes, and a slower gait are some of the more obvious physical changes you might see in your senior pet. Exactly when these changes occur varies from pet to pet but, in general, pets are classified as seniors after the age of seven years. Senior pets are more likely than younger pets to be overweight due to reduced daily energy needs and decreased activity. If your senior pet is in good health but overweight, overfeeding is most likely the problem. BRVC’s complimentary Curviest Critters weight management program can help you reduce an aging pet’s weight to a healthy level.

We can recommend the best treatment option for your pet’s condition such as a diet change or weight loss exercise program, medications for long-term pain relief, or surgery to correct abnormalities such as hip dysplasia. Feeding your pet a high-quality, premium senior food will enhance your pet’s health and may offset some digestive, and other health problems. Just imagine what your breath and teeth would be like if you never brushed or had a dental cleaning! Regular veterinary dental cleanings, at-home dental care, and dental chew toys help prevent plaque buildup and bad breath and are important to the overall health of your senior pet’s mouth, heart, kidneys, and liver. Many older pets develop thinner, graying coats, and dry skin; however, red, itchy skin or a balding coat could signal diseases such as diabetes, thyroid disease, or Cushing’s Disease.

Older pets with thinner coats and less muscle mass are more susceptible to extreme temperatures, so be sure to provide warm bedding during colder months and a cool resting place during months with high temperatures. The decisions you make regarding preventative care, nutrition, and exercise have a major impact on your pet’s health. If your pet experiences any of the health issues described above, please call to make an appointment with the Burr Ridge Veterinary Clinic team.

Pet Dental Care

Dental health is a very important part of your pet’s overall health, and dental problems can cause, or be caused by, other health problems. Veterinary dentistry includes the cleaning, adjustment, filing, extraction, or repair of your pets’ teeth and all other aspects of oral health care. Some pets become irritable when they have dental problems, and any changes in your pet’s behavior should prompt a visit to your veterinarian. Periodontal disease is the most common dental condition in dogs and cats – by the time your pet is 3 years old, he or she will very likely have some early evidence of periodontal disease, which will worsen as your pet grows older if effective preventive measures aren’t taken. Your pet does not understand the benefit of dental procedures, and he or she reacts by moving, trying to escape, or even biting.

Anesthesia makes it possible to perform the dental procedures with less stress and pain for your pet. Anesthesia allows for a better cleaning because your pet is not moving around and risking injury from the dental equipment. If radiographs are needed, your pet needs to be very still in order to get good images, and this is unlikely without heavy sedation or anesthesia. Prevention of the most common oral disease in pets consists of frequent removal of the dental plaque and tartar that forms on teeth that are not kept clean. Regularly brushing your pet’s teeth is the single most effective thing you can do to keep their teeth healthy between dental cleanings, and may reduce the frequency or even eliminate the need for periodic dental cleaning by your veterinarian.

There are many pet products marketed with claims that they improve dental health, but not all of them are effective. Talk with your veterinarian about any dental products, treats, or dental-specific diets you’re considering for your pet, or ask your veterinarian for their recommendation.

Pets And Pain Management

Pet therapy involves the use of interaction with trained animals to help a person recover from or cope with health issues by improving the individual’s physical, emotional and social well-being, thus enhancing self-esteem, providing comfort, helping with anxiety issues, and facilitating healing. The first programs to certify animals for therapy was finally introduced in the late 1980s. Any animal may be used for the purpose of pet assisted therapy, from cats, guinea pigs and rabbits, to horses and dogs, and even dolphins. In 2012, a study was carried out in a pain management clinic to investigate the effects of pets on patients with chronic pain. Another study to consider is the one that investigated the effect of short visits with therapy dogs on acute pain.

Those patients who participated in daily visits with the therapy dogs required less pain medication than patients who did not receive the therapy. Therapy dogs may be trained for a variety of jobs, but unlike their service dog counterparts, therapy dogs are encouraged to interact with humans, be sociable and engaging while they’re on-duty. Because pet therapy builds on the pre-existing human-animal bond, interacting with a gentle, friendly dog can have significant benefits. Pet therapy can also significantly reduce anxiety, pain, fatigue and depression in people who experience a range of health issues. Many children, teens and adults enjoy working with animals, thus pet therapy can be an effective method of treating individuals who are resistant to medication, or those who have difficulty accessing their emotions or expressing themselves in talk therapy.

People who are allergic to animal dander may have reactions during pet therapy. Consider pet therapy today as you work to manage and recover from your pain.

Pet Health and Nutrition

This field developed from the 1950s and espoused the theory that many modern chronic diseases were due to a plethora of toxins in the environment and environmental allergies1. Leaky Gut was and is said to be caused by damage to the gut lining which allows abnormal absorption of bacteria, toxins and gut proteins, and leads to development of a very large number of chronic medical conditions. Diseases that are said to be initiated or worsened by a Leaky gut include environmental and food allergies, arthritis of several types, eczema, chronic fatigue syndrome, inflammatory bowel disease, pancreatic disease, migraines, autism, celiac disease and gluten intolerance, and fibromyalgia. The gut is viewed as one important gateway for toxins and allergens from the environment, and constant exposure to these irritants were thought to cause gut pathology, leading to a vicious cycle of gut damage absorption of toxins, bacteria and abnormally large intraluminal proteins directly into portal and systemic circulation immune activation and immune-mediated diseases àdeterioration of gut barrier, and so on, over and over again. The pathogenesis of leaky gut is said to include: Altered GI microflora.

The intestinal microflora have many critical functions, including detoxifying some xenobiotics, maintaining an intraluminal environmental that discourages growth of pathogenic bacterial, maintaining the gut’s tight junctions and barrier function, and dialoguing with the immune tissues of the gut. Food allergies Damaged gut mucosal cells become unable to digest food normally, or to detoxify environmental xenobiotics Drugs that cause direct damage to the gut mucosa, such as NSAIDs and steroids, hastened the development of a hyperpermeable gut. Supplementing probiotics Correcting possible nutrient deficiencies with a variety of vitamins and minerals Treating yeast overgrowth Addressing the quality of fat in the diet to emphasize less inflammatory fatty acids Improving gut cell production and turnover with l-glutamine Just as environmental medicine doctors had reported, many veterinarians using these methods noted dramatic results when pets were treated using the same principles. The final results are the same – invasion into the bloodstream by gut microbes and activation of the immune system – but in the case of critically ill patients, the course of the problem was more rapid and easier to recognize. They are: Oxidative stress Hypoxia Tissue acidosis Nitric oxide – an cell-signallying molecule that influences circulation, and has been shown to have deleterious effects if present in the gut in abnormally high OR low concentrations.

Let’s look at what I would consider a typical veterinary patient who is a candidate for management of a hyperpermeable gut. Both conventional and alternative medicine are postulating similar mechanisms for the role of the gut in all disease.

Pet Health

Whether your pet is up against a neurological condition, nervous system or immune system issue, ALS or AIDS diagnosis, a thyroid problem, cancer, chronic UTIs, lipomas, allergies, hot spots, teeth issues, bad breath, or deficiencies of any kind, there are steps that you can take to support your animal through their health struggles and help them to be the healthiest they can be. There are a number of health issues you have to watch out for as a pet owner, and because your pet can’t describe the pain or problems they may be experiencing, it is essential that you surround yourself and your pet with proper support. If you don’t have a pet, but you scratch the back of your neighbor’s dog or pet your friend’s cat, you are still stimulating your immune system. If you choose to feed your dog, cat, or other animal grains, make sure the grains are non-GMO. If your pet has serious lipoma issues, keeping his or her diet completely grain-free may be ideal during the healing process.

Sometimes pets can grow fond of one food and not be very receptive to dietary changes, but if you are working to rid your pet of hot spots, switching up his or her food is the best course of action. The mineral composition inside these bones can transform the health of your dog, cat or other carnivorous pet. If you’ve always fed your pet cooked meat and veggies, and have never encountered food-related health issues, you can definitely continue providing your pet with a cooked diet, with the exception of cooked bones. Bring in raspberries, blackberries, bananas, wild blueberries, papaya, and any other fruits you think your dog or pet might like. If you’re on the hunt for the right kind of high quality supplements that matter and can make a great difference in your pet’s health, check out the Medical Medium page dedicated to preferred pet products.

A regular Hass avocado is okay for pets to eat, but other varieties of avocados, such as those grown in the West Indies and the larger avocado varieties found in Florida are not safe for your pet. As many pet owners already know, keeping your dog or cat away from chocolate is critical. It is best to stick to alcohol-free brands for the health of your pet.

Healthy pets, healthy people: How to avoid the diseases that pets can spread to people

Toxoplasmosis can be transmitted to humans by: Note that many infections do not come from pets, eg, undercooked meatsIf you are healthy, the symptoms may be fever, feeling generally unwell or swollen lymph nodes. Pet birds and wild birds can carry and spread psittacosis. Never live trap wild mice and do not keep them as pets. Rabies passes to humans through the bite of an infected wild animal or house pet. In Canada, house pets almost never have rabies, but bites from animals acting strangely, stray animals or those that live outside must be investigated.

Pets that carry salmonella usually don’t get sick from it, but people do. People get it from direct contact with their pets, or from cages, living areas or bird feeders contaminated by salmonella. Wash your hands well with soap and water after handling pets and pet chews. Keep reptile pets away from young children and babies. Exotic pets, such as sugar gliders and hedgehogs, turtles and other reptiles should not be kept as pets in homes with young children.

Whooping cough is caused by a germ with the same name, but people do not get whooping cough from pets. People, particularly children, are at risk of getting infected if they do not properly wash their hands after contact with their pet.

Healthy Pets Northwest – The natural alternative for Pet Food and Supplies

Portland is in the middle of construction season, and so it seems is Healthy Pets Northwest. This season we have been primarily working our Hawthorne and Multnomah Village stores, but have not forgotten Woodstock. Hawthorne Store Reset Customers coming into our Hawthorne store are noticing some big changes in the store’s layout and use of space. We have removed the old grocery store type of fixtures and replaced them with industrial pipe frames and wood shelves. Displays in the middle of the store have been updated to make them more functional and appealing.

We have changes coming so please stop in and check them out. Multnomah Village Updates At our Multnomah Village store the first new item most customers will see is sign above the front door. While it is new for us, we are glad to say that it is actually recycled from the Alberta store. Don’t be surprised if you show up one day and the store is a different color because we plan to have the building painted in August. Woodstock Deep Freeze Freezer space for raw foods and frozen treats is very tight at the Woodstock store.

To alleviate the crowding, we will be adding a three-door, glass-front freezer. It will give us a lot more space to meet the growing demand for raw pet foods.
