Start Sobriety Now

There are two things that you have relied on to get you through the struggles of day-to-day life: your substance(s) of choice and your pet. While your pet has provided you with unconditional love and has done nothing but bring positivity into your life, the drugs and/or alcohol that have you have been using certainly have not. If you have hit rock bottom and are ready to rid your life of the toxic substances that have had a hold on you, but you don’t want to part with your pet while you seek treatment, a pet-friendly rehab center is exactly what you are in need of. There’s a reason why pets are called man’s best friend: they provide unconditional love, build you up, give you a reason for being and just make you feel good. Bringing your pet to rehabilitation for addiction can give you the boost that you need when you feel like you aren’t going to be able to rise up and beat your addiction. If you have a pet that you have to leave behind in order to attend rehabilitation, the stress you experience can be compounded even more. With your trust companion by your side, you will never have to worry about feeling alone and will have someone with you that you can count on to not pass judgment while you go through recovery; after all, your pet didn’t pass judgment on you while you were in the height of your substance abuse and addiction. Several studies have found that pets can provide profound benefits while going through rehab. Accountability: Taking care of your pet teaches you responsibility, which can help to improve your mental health. The companionship of a pet helps to reduce the symptoms that are associated with anxiety and depression, two problems that are very common among people who are in the early stages of recovery. A pet can give you a sense of purpose by helping you think of someone other than yourself. Having your pet with you in rehab can help you feel more at ease. Some rehabs will allow your pet to stay with you in your room throughout the duration of your stay, while others allow pets to visit during scheduled times. Pets may be permitted to be present during the treatment process; for example, you may be able to bring your dog or cat with you to a counseling session, or you may be allowed to take your pet out for a walk, or while socializing with other patients who are attending rehab.

If you want BIG LOVE-BUG ADDITION TO YOUR HOME

I am currently fostering one of the BEST dogs I have ever met. His name is HOWIE! He looks like a pit bull, but he is actually a Stanfordshire Bull Terrier. He is one of the biggest love-bugs you’ll ever meet. He deserves a loving home:) He listens pretty well, and he is an inside dog. He gets along really well with other dogs, even chihuahuas, and HE LOOOOOOVES KIDS. He gives lots of dog kisses, so watch out ;D.Just don’t adopt him if you have any chickens. Cost of all vaccines for the first year∙ neutering costs∙ life-time microchip∙ petsmart coupon book with $400 worth of coupons including a free bag of dog food. The shelter/clinic I volunteer for is called WAGS n WHISKERS. The rehoming fee goes to them and that pays for animals vaccines, food, care, etc. To adopt him, you will have to fill out an application, and I will be able to provide you with the link. I’m more than happy to set up a meet-and-greet.

How to: Stop Pet Accidents!

Fact is, dogs have an incredible sense a smell, so even though I would clean the area thoroughly and could no longer smell his urine. Avoid using ammonia based products to clean dog urine. Dog urine has ammonia in it and he/she may be encouraged to go in the same area. Remember, your dog’s sense of smell is a hundred times better than yours. The smell is too overwhelming to a dog and he/she will be deterred from using that spot as his/her bathroom. Make sure to respray the area every 24 hours until the dog completely loses interest in that area. Again, the scent is too much for the dog to bear and will deter him/her from sniffing around that area. Your dog will start getting used to this treatment and want to go the bathroom outside ALL THE TIME! If you see your dog panting, pacing, sniffing around insidechances are he/she needs the bathroom! If you catch your dog about to take a squatFIRMLY SAY “NO! OUT!” and immediately take them to the door and outside and follow ‘TIP #2″ above. Do NOT yell or smack your dog! Negative reinforcement may end up making your dog’s behavior worse, so it is important not to revert to that no matter how frustrating the situation gets. Use a crate! Your dog might have serious separation anxiety when you leave him/her for a while causing him/her to go the bathroom in the house. The investment of a crate is well worth the cost if it means your dog won’t be having accidents while your gone. Think about itIf your bladder was the size of a walnut you would need to pee every 20 minutes too! Its not the dogs fault for being so small. I’m happy to report that after my initial post back in May 2012, my dog hasn’t had any more accidents in the house.

Do you ever dream about your deceased pet?

Years ago, I faced the heartbreaking choice of how to remove one of my three kitties from my household. I brought Saber into my home when her owners, my neighbours, moved away and were going to just lock her out of their house and let her survive on the street. My already-resident cats LOATHED her and made her life miserable. I suspect that when I wasn’t home, Saber literally did not move from her hiding space under my bed until I returned hours later; she was that tormented by the other 2. Finally, I accepted that Saber was living a miserable life and that she’d be better off out of my household. After months of trying, I was unsuccessful in finding anyone who would adopt her, and the local humane society puts down kitties like it’s going out of style. One night as I tried to find her a new home, I had a horrible nightmare. In it, I visited a pet store that I used to work near. In the dream, I returned to that store for the first time in 5 years, and found my poor Saber in one of their cages! She’d been locked up the whole time, with no family or outside playtime. It was horrible, I felt so fucking guilty that my tears woke me up. I decided to put Saber to sleep rather than risk her being in a cage for the rest of her life. Some of you will probably freak out on me for this, putting down a probably-healthy cat, but I couldn’t find any other options that wouldn’t have also resulted in her death or worse. Anyway, back on topic, about once a year, I again dream that I find Saber has been locked up in a pet store for years. It’s always a very unpleasant dream and brings back all the horrible memories of her death.

Loving and Letting Go of Your Pet

A child’s bond with a beloved animal is a powerful one. The loss of a pet due to illness or trauma can be a troubling time in a child’s life. When You Have to Say Goodbye – Loving and Letting Go of Your Pet is a fully-illustrated children’s book that gently describes the why’s surrounding end-of-life issues with animals. The book details ways for children to move through this experience in a positive fashion. While written with young family members in mind, this book is certain to touch the heart of adults as well. “This book belongs in every veterinary practice, library and school system in the country. A child’s love for a pet lasts a lifetime. This book is instrumental in helping navigate a very difficult period in a child’s life.” – Sue Curtis, Executive Director – Massachusetts Veterinary Medical Association. “This is a terrific children’s book and resource for both parents and kids, to help them navigate through the difficult, yet normal feelings regarding pet loss! Definitely a worthwhile read!” – Dr. Robi Ludwig, Psychotherapist and National TV Commentator. “Thanks to Monica Mansfield and Lennie Peterson, When You Have to Say Goodbye is a delightful, well written and well illustrated book that fulfills a need and should be in every veterinarian’s waiting room.” – Alexander de Lahunta DVM, PhD, Emeritus Professor. “This is well written and very thoughtful. It is an excellent, well illustrated book that can help a child through the painful process of saying goodbye to a beloved pet. This book should find its way into the hands of all children who experience this painful but sometimes necessary experience of life, creating more sensitive, loving and understanding adults when life hands us other disappointments, loss and grief.” – Dr. Jim Humphries, President – Veterinary News Network. “I am glad to know there are books like Beanpole Books’ When You Have to Say Goodbye: Loving and Letting Go of Your Pet, by Monica Mansfield, that help kids understand the process of grieving for these family members. It’s an important book.” – Sarah C., The Daily Pretzel.

Pet Birds by Lafeber Co.

How long has the doctor been working on birds? Ideally, he or she should have extensive experience working directly with birds. Does the veterinary office quarantine sick birds? Ideally, the office should have a separate area for ill birds. Sticker your glass and mirrors, or keep them dirty! Open Windows & Doors Many pet birds that fly away are never recovered. Some companion bird guardians choose to have their birds’ wing feathers clipped, and others choose to leave their birds flighted. You’ll often hear that birds hide the signs of illness until it’s too late, and the illness is either too far advanced to be cured, or the bird is belly up in the cage. Being Picked On By Cage Mates: Birds will pick on other birds that are ill, and may even kill the weakened one. Breeding birds takes more than just putting a nest in the cage with a pair of birds. Quarantine is traditionally a period of 40 days in which a new bird should be separated from other birds in order to make sure that the bird is healthy. Many deadly avian diseases are easily spread through the air or close contact, so it’s important to separate new birds from established birds. The bigger the bird, the less able a cat will be able to test the boundaries, so small birds are more in danger in a household with cats. Rats, Rabbits & Other Furry Critters: Most “Critters” aren’t dangerous to birds, but they do carry pasteurella bacteria, which is deadly to birds. Write your bird’s name and species, your phone number, and your veterinarian’s phone number in permanent ink on the bird’s carrier, and draw an arrow on each side to indicate which way is “Up.” Most birds are fairly calm inside the carrier, but some may panic. These days, most states require that all birds sold be “Closed banded,” meaning that a small, metal band is placed by the bird breeder onto the bird’s leg when the bird is just a few days old. Some breeders don’t do this, especially with smaller birds, but most do band their baby birds, especially if they intend to sell the birds to stores or to the general public.

PreKinders

Pre-K & Preschool theme ideas for learning about pets. As a few dog commands are called out, the children act them out. The children choose which kind of pet they want to be. Children roll play dough into little balls to make dog food or cat food and place them into a bowl. One year, one of my students also had the idea to roll Model Magic into little balls for pet food and paint the pieces brown. Children used the pretend food in the pet store and in their pretend play with the toy dogs and cats. Children made pet food, dog houses, pet toys, and leashes to sell in their pet store. Our graph title was “What is your favorite pet?” In the top of the chart, I placed pet clipart. The children chose which pet they would like to have, and placed their name card in the pocket chart graph. For each set of cards, half of the cards are stamped with dogs and half with cats to represent the numbers 0-4. Children work in pairs, and have an equal amount of cards: one child has cat cards, the other child has dog cards. The player whose card has the most cats or dogs keeps both cards for that round of the game. In the house center, we have toy dogs and cats with pet food bowls, rawhide bones, pet carrier, collars, leash, pet bed, pet toys. Schedule a visit from a K-9 police dog and ask the officer to talk about the importance of working dogs.

The Humane Society of the United States

Here are some tips that we hope will help you find your pet. Contact local animal shelters and animal control agencies. File a lost pet report with every shelter within a 60-mile radius of your home and visit the nearest shelters daily, if possible. Provide these agencies with an accurate description and a recent photograph of your pet. Notify the police if you believe your pet was stolen. Ask neighbors, letter carriers and delivery people if they have seen your pet. Hand out a recent photograph of your pet and information on how you can be reached if your pet is found. Post notices at grocery stores, community centers, veterinary offices, traffic intersections, pet supply stores and other locations. Include your pet’s sex, age, weight, breed, color and any special markings. When describing your pet, leave out one identifying characteristic and ask the person who finds your pet to describe it. When talking to a stranger who claims to have found your pet, ask him to describe the pet thoroughly before you offer any information. If he does not include the identifying characteristic you left out of the advertisements, he may not really have your pet. Be particularly wary of people who insist that you give or wire them money for the return of your pet. Ask your local animal shelter or veterinarian if permanent methods of identification are available in your area.

What Your Pet Can Teach You

I am honored that so many people look to me to help them enjoy more fulfilling relationships with their dogs, but the truth is that the dogs themselves have been my teachers. Here are some of the ways dogs have helped me become a better, happier, and more-balanced human being. People often wonder how I get such quick results with the dogs I rehabilitate. I tell my clients to follow this simple rule with their dogs: Offer exercise, discipline, and affection every day. By paying attention to nonverbal cues such as body language and energy, we can learn more about our friends, our loved ones, and ourselves. Great relationships, no matter the species, begin with clear and consistent communication. A great leader is also a great follower and knows that everybody counts. There’s a remarkable lack of conflict in dog packs. When dogs are bored, they develop issues ranging from anxiety to aggression. Ask yourself how you can contribute more to your job, your family, and the world around you. Every walk is the best walk, every meal is the best meal, every game is the best game. We can learn so much by observing the way our pets rejoice in life’s simplest moments. Take time every day to celebrate the many gifts that are hidden in the ordinary events of your own life.
