Woody & Mickey Healthy Pet Fund

This fund gives the League extra resources when considering veterinary care for the animals staying with us. The shelter can now provide medical treatment that will make animals more adoptable. You may make a donation to the Woody & Mickey Healthy Pet Fund by mail or phone or donate online, simply designate the Woody and Mickey Healthy Pet Fund on your form. Dr. de la Cruz of Caring Hands Animal Hospital determined that the best course of action was amputation. Dr. Newman offered enucleation, removal of the eye, at a reduced rate and the Healthy Pet Fund took care of the rest! Winkie went home with a loving family that very same month. They grew up with the Animal Welfare League of Arlington. Although they weren’t adopted from the League, they spent a lot of time there: they took many training classes together, became League pet therapy dogs, and walked in the League’s Walk for the Animals. Woody was a Sheltie born in 1988, owned by Dr. Percy Ivy, and definitely the Alpha dog. Woody loved snowy winters and frolicking in his Arlington backyard with lots of snow on his nose. With Woody, he walked for homeless people and animals every year. Julie named him Mickey Mouse because of his big ears and big heart. Woody and Mickey were pet therapy dogs together at the League. During their long lives, they received excellent health care from Suburban Animal Hospital and VCA Veterinary Referral Associates. Julie and Percy started the Woody & Mickey Healthy Pet Fund to extend the League’s financial resources for the increasing cost of medical care. The idea is to help the animals get back on their feet again and be adopted sooner.

PET Scan

A PET scan produces three-dimensional, colour images of your body using radionuclides. Increasingly, PET scans are being combined with another form of imaging such as magnetic resonance imaging or computerised tomography. PET scanning is most commonly used in the diagnosis and assessment of cancer. If you have epilepsy, PET scanning may be used to assess which part of your brain is affected, and whether you are suitable for certain treatments. In Alzheimer’s disease, a PET scan can be used to provide a diagnosis of the condition. PET scans of the heart can identify if parts of the heart have been scarred or damaged, and if it is working properly. Before a PET scan is carried out, a radioactive medicine is produced in a machine called a cyclotron. A PET scan works by detecting the energy released by positrons. A PET scan is particularly useful in detecting cancer because most cancers use more glucose than normal tissue. A radiologist will look at the images that a PET scan produces, and report the results to the doctor who is treating you. If you are being examined for heart disease, you may undergo a PET scan both before and after exercising or before and after receiving medication that increases blood flow to the heart. Normally you will be asked not to eat anything for several hours before a PET scan. For other people, it is advisable that you do not have close contact with babies or young children until a few hours after your PET scan. The radioactive chemicals used in PET scans are considered to be safe and they leave the body quickly in the urine. If you are pregnant or breast-feeding, there may be a risk to your baby if you have a PET scan.

2001 NE Alberta St, Alberta Arts District, Portland, OR

In a town of amazing pet stores healthy pets stands out and is maybe the most amazing. Healthy pets can give you all kinds of recommendations if you want to deepen your knowledge and increase your options for optimal health for your dog. The judiciously-named Healthy Pets Northwest store in the heart of the Alberta Arts District is a locally-owned, small pet store any serious Portland pet lover should know. The team at Healthy Pets Northwest are remarkably open with their care and concern for a healthier pet lifestyle. Of course, to get that high-quality diet, it all comes at higher prices than you’re used to paying at the local mega pet chain. I’m not sure my dog should be eating healthier or more expensively than I am, but there’s no doubt Healthy Pets Northwest is a charming local pet store to find the information and products to give my dog the best care and health. Prices are competitive compared to other local pet stores. It’s a really unique pet store compared to the big giant companies. Walking in, to the right there are a variety of pet foods and dog treats in these containers you can choose from. There is a wall of pet toys to the left with a lot of options to choose from. I’m forever grateful…. Great neighborhood pet store. Staff is knowledgeable, friendly and enthusiastic about pets. Great selection of all the other pet supplies you’d need: toys, food, treats, training aids, etc at decent prices especially for a boutique type store. Heather says “Um…. hi Daniel! Um…. did you happen to leave a not so great review of Healthy Pets Northwest on Yelp??” They both had huge smiles on their faces. Glad to find my new favorite place to buy food for my pets.

Healthy pets, healthy people: How to avoid the diseases that pets can spread to people

Which pets can carry infection? Name of infection How does infection pass from pets to people? What happens if I get it? Tips for prevention Cats and dogs can also carry, and transmit Salmonella Campylobacter – most common bacterial cause of gastroenteritis worldwide. Human infections are usually caused not by pets, but by eating contaminated raw or undercooked meat, or by drinking unpasteurized milk. And can spread, “Cat scratch disease” A common skin infection, mostly affecting children, young adults, sometimes with gland swelling and/or fever. Teach your cat not to scratch and your children not to play roughly with pets. Even healthy dogs and cats may carry it, though diarrhea is especially common in puppies. Wash your hands, and make sure children wash hands, after contact with farm animals and pets. Pets with diarrhea should be seen by a vet for proper treatment. Pets can get rabies from saliva, if a wild animal bites them. Ringworm – different kinds of fungus that can cause rashFarm animals, pets and wild animals can carry fungal spores on their skin or hair. Cats and dogs are common carriers, and may have no symptoms of infection, especially in households with several pets or shelters. Wash your hands and make sure children wash hands after contact with pets. In people with a seriously weakened immune system, infection can lead to potentially life-threatening brain infections. If you are pregnant, avoid activities that might expose you to cat feces. Salmonella bacteria are everywhere in the environment and live in the intestinal tract of healthy poultry, livestock, reptiles and pets. Wash your hands well with soap and water after handling pets, pet chews, coming into contact with pet waste, and cleaning a birdfeeder.

Health Risks of Having a Pet

Dogs and cats that spend time in wooded areas may pick up tiny ticks. Some ticks carry Lyme disease, which can be hard to detect and diagnose, causing long-term problems, such as irregular heartbeat, arthritis, and impaired brain function. “Always check animals after time in the woods,” says Swanson. Do a full-body inspection on your kids and yourself, too. Remove ticks from animals and humans in the same way: Disinfect the bite area with rubbing alcohol and pull the tick straight up and off with tweezers. That way, if your child or pet becomes ill over the next few weeks, you’ll have the tick for testing. When removing ticks from pets, it’s helpful to have a second person to help prevent the animal from twisting or jerking.

Therapy Pets And Humans With Mental Health Issues

Pet therapy is defined as a guided interaction between a specially trained animal and an individual or group, facilitated by the animal’s handler [ii]. Also known as animal-assisted therapy, pet therapy interactions are used to help improve patients’ mental, social, emotional, and physical functions. Therapy can take place in a wide range of settings including hospitals, care homes, and treatment centers and can involve different activities such as walking, looking after, and grooming the therapy animal. Trained animals [iii] are used to benefit patients suffering with emotional and behavioral disorders, depression, autism, substance abuse, and dementia. Animals accept us as we are – they don’t judge and they don’t threaten – so patients can wholeheartedly interact with them safe in the knowledge that there is no hidden agenda. Individuals with emotionally based disorders in particular may find it difficult to open up and trust another human being, but discover this process is much easier with a therapy animal. Let’s look in a bit more detail at three health and wellness areas where therapy pets can make a real difference – mental health, dementia, and substance abuse. A wide range of mental health conditions are now treated through pet-therapy programs [v]. Interactions with animals are considered to offer benefits to patients suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder, autism [vi], and challenging psychiatric disorders. Animal therapy is also used extensively to treat depression. Petting an animal is believed to cause the release of endorphins which can have an extremely positive impact in patients dealing with depressive disorders. Therapy animals have also been successfully used within treatment programs for individuals with substance abuse issues. The presence of an animal can in itself help calm the patient down and prepare them to face their demons. Doctors observing how the addict deals with the animal also get a greater insight into the patient’s self-esteem issues, helping them identify specific coping mechanisms and healthier new behaviors [x]. Often integrated into counseling programs, animal therapy can help addicts learn more about teamwork, communication, trust, and self-expression. i. “Pets as therapy – The therapeutic benefits of animal interaction for adults and children,” Petsastherapy.org. “What is animal assisted therapy?” CRC Health Group.

10 Best Pet Insurance of 2018

What is Pet Insurance?Pet Insurance costs $38-70/month & covers a significant portion of vet bills that can cost $5-$10k. Pet insurance – or veterinary health insurance for your cat or dog – is about being prepared for the unexpected. Having a plan with a top-tier company gives you financial protection; in the event you’re faced with an expensive $2,000-6,000 surgery for your pet, a good insurance policy will pay up to 90% of that vet bill. Consumers Advocate, a company that rates a range of products, began sifting through the variables to rank pet insurers according to customer reviews, upfront deductions and whether they pay for a disease’s continuing costs. What questions should you ask? And which companies have the best plans for your pet? These are important questions, but getting good answers can be confusing. To help you find the company that’s best for you & your furry friend, our editors have done the work for you. How to choose the right pet insuranceCoverage & Benefit Limits are the most important factors to consider when comparing pet insurance. Whether your pet needs a couple stitches put into an injured paw or if they’re facing a serious life threatening condition like cancer, you want a plan that has broad coverage & has few exclusions. Pet insurance is for the unexpected, and while some breeds are pre-disposed for specific health problems, the only thing you can really expect as a pet parent is that the unexpected will happen. Despite sounding like something you might want to have included as part of your pet insurance plan, wellness coverage is not a good deal. Wellness coverage drives up your monthly premiums & makes it so you pay more over the life of your pet for inexpensive procedures that are cheaper to pay out-of-pocket. Depending on the Pet Insurance company, your plan may provide unlimited lifetime benefits or your benefits may be capped on an annual, lifetime, or per-condition basis. We prefer companies that have unlimited lifetime benefits, meaning plans that have no payout cap. Veterinary Care costing $5,000 or more is becoming more common and having a plan without limits means you can give your pet the best care possible year after year. You may find that a plan with a payout cap works best for your needs and price point. As discussed above, type of plan, deductible choice, reimbursement percentage choice, and benefit limit choice are also important.

Pet owners usually have the urge to socialize with other pet owners. Selecting Safe Pets

Caring for pets can boost self-esteem, prevent loneliness, and even lower heart rate and blood pressure in some people. Selecting the right pet is a serious decision that family members should make together. Many shelters and pet stores actually don’t allow purchases or adoptions of pets around the holidays because, far too often, animals are returned when families haven’t thought through all of the responsibilities of taking care of the pet. If you’re set on getting a pet for a birthday or the holidays, the Humane Society of the United States and the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals suggests first buying and wrapping some pet supplies as gifts, then selecting the pet as a family. How much care will the pet require? What role will each family member play in the pet’s care? Who will feed the pet, groom and bathe it, clean its living space, and walk it, if need be? What kind of medical care will the pet need? How big will the pet grow to be? Do you have enough space in your home for the pet to live and exercise? If you’re thinking about getting a dog, do you have a yard, preferably a fenced one? Do you have another pet? How do you think it will get along with a new pet? Who will care for the pet when you’re away? Does anyone in your family have a history of allergies or asthma? If so, talk to your doctor about the possibility of pet allergy tests to see whether anyone might be allergic to certain animals. Although the animals your child sees in the woods or parks may be cute to look at, they can be dangerous as pets – they aren’t used to being around people and may carry diseases that can be transmitted to your child. Just because you can buy a pet from the pet store doesn’t mean it’s safe for homes with kids. If you live in a wooded area, check your pets regularly for ticks. Common domesticated animals that can make good family pets include cats, dogs, rabbits, birds, and fish. Also look around for guides about taking care of different kinds of pets. Teach kids how to handle and pick up pets – to never squeeze them too tight, drop them, fall on them, or pick them up too fast. Teach kids never to pet or try to play with an animal they don’t know, even if it’s someone’s family pet. Teach kids to wash their hands with soap and water after handling pets. Don’t keep undomesticated animals as house pets. Pet ownership has many benefits, and doing a little research before taking the plunge will help make your new pet a welcome addition to the family.

Pets: Good for Your Health?

There’s no doubt that Americans love their pets. Can having pets actually provide health benefits? Yes, say experts, as long as you’re not allergic to animals or terrified of them. “Pet ownership is good for your health both physically and psychologically,” says Connecticut psychologist Herbert Nieburg, author of “Pet Loss: A Thoughtful Guide for Adults and Children”. Sure, pets provide companionship and unconditional love. “Any disease condition that has a stress-related component to it, we believe pets could ameliorate stress and moderate the situation,” says biologist Erika Friedmann, a professor at the University of Maryland School of Nursing. Many four-legged pets, especially dogs, can also get owners off the couch. “They’re there to greet you when you come home at the end of the day, and they’re ready for some play and attention,” says veterinarian Scott Line, associate editor of the “Merck/Merial Manual for Pet Health.” “They need to exercise, so it propels people out the door.” These walks also force pet owners to socialize instead of sitting around feeling sorry for themselves, which can help improve their mood. The AVMA survey found that nearly half of respondents considered their pets to be companions; only about 2 percent considered them to be property. “The human-animal bond is becoming increasingly strong in our society,” says veterinarian and veterinary surgeon Kimberly May of the AVMA. In fact, Alan Beck, director of the Center for Human-Animal Bond at Purdue University, found in a study that 97 percent of people talk to their pets. Families with allergies can still get a pet if they can commit to allergy shots. Families may choose furless and featherless pets instead, like turtles, iguanas, fish and snakes. Another option for kids with allergies who want a pet? Bring home a stuffed animal instead. A study in the January issue of the AAP journal Pediatrics found that a “Huggy-Puppy” doll actually eased the stress and improved outcomes for 2-to-7-year-old children in Israel who were exposed to violence during the Israeli-Lebanon war in 2006. Don’t think adding more pets will bring more health benefits. Finally, as many benefits as pets bring, it’s important not to become too dependent on those animal companions, cautions psychologist Alan Entin, past president of the American Psychological Association’s division of family psychology. Though they make great companions, in the end pets are still no substitute for human friends and family.

Healthy Dog & Cat Food

Thus our natural dog food, cat food, and other pet products are developed by in-house pet health doctorate professionals and produced in our own manufacturing facilities. Wysong develops state of the art, nutraceutically enhanced healthy dog food, natural cat food, ferret food, horse supplements and pet supplements with a view to long term prevention and staving off the long-latency diseases pets often fall victim to. Wysong also offers a variety of gourmet raw cat and dog food, as well as health supplements designed to help your pet live a healthy life. Our healthy dog and cat food products have helped thousands of pet owners provide the healthy food their dogs, cats or other pets need. Dry Dog Food Wysong dry dog foods are designed to mimic the archetypal canine diet, and are uniquely formulated and manufactured to meet – as closely as possible – the carnivorous genetic requirements of dogs. Canned Dog Food Much like with dry dog foods in general, canned dog food quality varies significantly, and may contain unhealthful ingredients that are more conducive to profit than health. Wysong canned dog foods can be fed as a standalone meal, or as an adjunct to Wysong dry and raw dog foods. Raw Dog Food For many decades Wysong has promoted the importance of raw dog food. The fact of the matter is, while dry and canned dog foods can emulate the natural canine diet, no food can quite match that genetic expectation like a properly designed raw dog food. We pathogen test all raw dog foods prior to release to ensure that your dog receives all of the nutritional benefits of raw dog food at negligible risk. Canned Cat Food Canned cat foods provide an opportunity for nutritional superiority as compared to other pet food forms, and Wysong’s canned cat food line incorporates all of those nutritional advantages. Our canned cat food line is rounded out with Uretic with Organic Chicken™, which is the canned counterpart to our successful Uretic™ dry cat food. Raw Cat Food Domestic cat caretakers must face one unarguable truth when it comes to the nutritional requirements of their cat: in the wild cats subsist only on raw prey and carrion. A responsible, healthful feeding regimen for a domestic cat must incorporate raw cat food. Wysong raw cat foods are healthful, nutritious, safe, and most definitely palatable! Wysong True Non-Thermal™ processing keeps processing temperatures below 118° Fahrenheit, which is the temperature at which important food components like probiotics and enzymes are deactivated.

Pets for the Elderly: Research

Results of a three-year study of 5,741 people at the Baker Medical Research Institute, Melbourne, Australia, show that pet owners had lower blood pressure and triglyceride and cholesterol levels than did non-owners – a result that could not be explained by such personal differences as cigarette smoking, diet, weight or socio-economic profile…. …Of the 3,394 men and 2,347 women engaged in the study, 784 reported that they owned one or more pets. It may sound like a tall order for a small bundle of fur to fill, but there’s apparently a lot to be said for the snuggling, laughter and unconditional love that pets provide…and…while human best friends can be evaluative or judgmental, pets are not. With the growing number of elderly people living alone, pets are especially important in increasing their interest in life…pets give the elderly something to care for, as well as providing an opportunity for exercise and socialization. Reviewing 25 studies on the effects of pets on elderly people in nursing homes… found that residents exposed to pets consistently smiled more and became measurably more alert than those who did not encounter animals. Elderly people who own pets also make fewer visits to doctors than those who are without animal companions, possibly because the animals mitigate loneliness. Many elderly people have discovered that pets satisfy their greatest needs, and trigger a reversal of many negative self-images. Pets ease the advent of old age by diverting an older person’s attention away from himself and onto the playful antics of a dog or cat. Pets are a source of ongoing life…they serve as a much needed connection to youth…a pet is the greatest ego booster in the world – they think you’re the greatest! In a recent study, researchers found that elderly people who own pets visit doctors less often than those without four-legged friends. Pets have been shown to build self-esteem, increase mental alertness, and lift the spirits of people with Alzheimer’s disease. Pet owners seemed more apt to cope by themselves, whereas people without pets went to the doctor 16% more often when faced with stressful situations. Pets give people a sense of purpose, provide nonjudgmental acceptance, and allow people to become attached to something – and feel that something is attached to them. It was only later, when the investigators knew more about the many ways in which pets change their owners’ lives, that the life-preserving effect of pets became believable. Allowing pet owners to love and feel loved may be the greatest contribution pets make.

Health Benefits of Pet Ownership

Many of the benefits of pets – companionship, affection and so on – have been well known for centuries – even numerous ancient Egyptians cherished their companion animals. A study undertaken in 2002 by the Waltham Center for Pet Nutrition and United States Food and Drug Administration revealed that the heart rates and blood pressures of pet owners increased less when the individuals were presented with math problems to solve if their companion animals were present. Another study, one conducted by the United States National Institutes of Health during 2001, showed that people who have pets not only “Make fewer doctor visits, especially for non-serious medical conditions,” but are more likely to be alive one year after being treated for a coronary condition. Several recent surveys of individuals sharing their lives with pets have revealed that most of them are convinced their health is improved by having animals around. Ninety-two percent of the respondents to a survey conducted by the American Animal Hospital Association during 2002 indicated that they derive significant health benefits from their pets. 65 percent indicated their mental health is improved by their pets. A survey undertaken by the American Pet Products Manufacturers Association in 2000 yielded results very similar to those obtained by the AAHA. Eighty-eight percent of the senior citizens who responded to the APPMA survey indicated that “Pets make their family or home life healthier, either emotionally or physically.” In addition, 79 percent of all of the respondents stated they believe “Pets help to create a healthier balancewith the increasing presence of technology” in homes. The unique bond we share with our pets dramatically enriches our lives, our physical health and our emotional well-being. Many studies have shown that while we are taking care of our pets, our pets are taking care of us. A recent study at the State University of New York at Buffalo found that people with hypertension who adopted a cat or dog had lower blood pressure readings in stressful situations than did those who did not own a pet. Walking with a pet helps to sooth nerves and offers instant relaxation. Studies conducted worldwide have shown that the impact of a stressful situation is lesser on pet owners, especially males, than on those who do not own a pet. Because pets provide people with faithful companionship, research shows they may also provide their owners with greater psychological stability, thus a measure of protection from heart disease. People with pets actually make fewer doctor visits, especially for non-serious medical conditions. Pets help fight depression and loneliness, promoting an interest in life.

Pet Therapy: How Animals And Humans Heal Each Other

Pet Therapy: How Animals And Humans Heal Each Other : Shots – Health News Dogs, cats, birds, fish and even horses are increasingly being used in settings ranging from hospitals and nursing homes to schools, jails and mental institutions. A growing body of scientific research suggests interacting with animals can make us healthier – and benefits them, too. That helps explain the increasing use of animals – dogs and cats mostly, but also birds, fish and even horses – in settings ranging from hospitals and nursing homes to schools, jails and mental institutions. “One could even look at Florence Nightingale recognizing that animals provided a level of social support in the institutional care of the mentally ill,” says Fine, who has written several books on the human-animal bond. More recently, says Rebecca Johnson, a nurse who heads the Research Center for Human/Animal Interaction at the University of Missouri College of Veterinary Medicine, studies have been focusing on the fact that interacting with animals can increase people’s level of the hormone oxytocin. “Oxytocin helps us feel happy and trusting.” Which, Johnson says, may be one of the ways that humans bond with their animals over time. Animals can also act as therapists themselves or facilitate therapy – even when they’re not dogs or cats. “One of the things that’s always been known is that the animals help a clinician go under the radar of a child’s consciousness, because the child is much more at ease and seems to be much more willing to reveal,” he says. “We want to know how the animals are benefiting from the exchange,” says Johnson of the University of Missouri. Much of Johnson’s research, for example, has focused on the value of dog-walking by studying volunteers who walk dogs at animal shelters. Johnson is now working on a new project with likely benefits for dogs and humans. While it’s still early in the research, she says, one thing seems pretty clear: “Helping the animals is helping the veterans to readjust to being at home.” The National Institutes of Health, with funding from pet food giant Mars Inc., recently created a federal research program to study human-animal interaction. The program, operated through the National Institute for Child Health and Human Development, offers scientists research grants to study the impact of animals on child development, in physical and psychological therapeutic treatments, and on the effects of animals on public health, including their ability to reduce or prevent disease. Johnson says it’s critical to establish the scientific foundation for the premise that animals are good for people, even if that seems obvious.
