Pesticide Use Around Pets

People often use pesticides in their homes or yards to control a variety of pests such as insects, weeds and rodents. Pet owners may also apply pesticide products directly to their pets to control ticks and/or fleas. Although these pesticides can be beneficial, they have the potential to hurt your pet if they are not stored and used properly. Remove pets from the area before you begin applying pesticides. Remove all pet toys, chew bones, food bowls and bedding from the area as well. Always read and follow the pesticide label directions before using any pesticide. Keep pets away from treated areas until the pesticide is completely dry and the area has been well ventilated. Cover fish tanks to prevent liquid and vapors from entering the tank. If you use foggers, always turn off fish tank pumps during the application. Pesticide baits are often prepared with food ingredients that can be attractive to pets. If you use rat, mouse or gopher baits or baits for slugs and snails, place the baits in locations where your pet cannot reach them. Consider selecting a bait product with lower potential for secondary poisoning. Granular lawn products may require keeping the pets off the treated area for 24 hours or longer while the granules dissolve and the treated area dries. If you hire a pest control company or lawn service, talk to them about the products they are using and the potential risk to your pets.

Pet Health Care

Preventive health care can help add to the length and quality of your pet’s life, too. All pets deserve the benefits from a lifestyle of optimum nutrition, exercise and regular veterinary visits. The PetGuard philosophy embodies a commitment to you and your pets to provide only natural alternatives for a healthier environment and lifestyle. Our complete line of natural pet care products offer discriminating pet owners the opportunity to provide their pets with the same healthy benefits that we all seek for ourselves. We recommend varying your pet’s diet occasionally by adding portions of fresh meat and vegetables as a part of a natural approach to nutritional well-being. To accustom your pet to a new food, we suggest mixing the new food with the current food. Gradually reduce the amount of the current food until your pet is eating the proper ration of PetGuard Premium pet food. Generally this change should take place over 7 to 10 days unless you are instructed differently by a veterinarian. Abrupt changes in your pet’s diet can cause indigestion. Be sure your pet always has plenty of fresh drinking water in a clean bowl. An adequate water intake is necessary to maintain your pet’s good health and body functions. Your pets are not able to read labels, therefore it is up to you to be their guard dog and pay particular attention to the ingredients contained in your pet’s daily meals.

Health Risks of Having a Pet

Dogs and cats that spend time in wooded areas may pick up tiny ticks. Some ticks carry Lyme disease, which can be hard to detect and diagnose, causing long-term problems, such as irregular heartbeat, arthritis, and impaired brain function. “Always check animals after time in the woods,” says Swanson. Do a full-body inspection on your kids and yourself, too. Remove ticks from animals and humans in the same way: Disinfect the bite area with rubbing alcohol and pull the tick straight up and off with tweezers. That way, if your child or pet becomes ill over the next few weeks, you’ll have the tick for testing. When removing ticks from pets, it’s helpful to have a second person to help prevent the animal from twisting or jerking.

Agriculture Victoria

Victoria has one of the highest rates of pet ownership in the world. Owning pets can be a lot of fun, and pets can provide us with company, stress relief and unconditional love. Pet ownership also teaches children responsibility and helps them develop their social and nurturing skills. Cats and dogs can live for over 10 years, so it’s important that we understand the responsibilities we have for our pets over their entire life span. Responsible pet ownership involves choosing the right pet for your lifestyle, complying with the law, caring for your pet’s health and ensuring your pet doesn’t cause problems in the community. Being a responsible owner ensures you and your pet can enjoy a long and happy relationship.

Merck Animal Health

If your pet is displaying any of these common signs, he or she may have diabetes. If you didn’t know your dog or cat could develop diabetes, you’re not alone. Many owners don’t realize diabetes can affect pets too, so learning that your dog or cat has the condition can leave you with many questions. While there’s no cure for diabetes, proper care can help your pet live a happy, healthy, active life. The more you know about diabetes, the better you’ll be able to work with your veterinarian to successfully manage your pet’s health. Your veterinarian is an essential partner in your pet’s diabetes care. Only your veterinarian can diagnose diabetes and provide appropriate preventive and management programs.
