Healthy pets can lead to healthy people! With this in mind, the Veterinary Public Health Program at the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health created the 2020 Healthy Pets Healthy Families Initiative to monitor local animal health trends and generate goals and interventions to improve both animal and human health. HPHF formed a coalition of local partners and established goals for 7 focus areas. HPHF coalition members meet quarterly to network, learn about the work done by local partners and collaborate on projects. A key component of HPHF is understanding local pet health data. While humans have come full circle in regards to personal and earth care, pets have largely remained in the manufactured and simulated age. We insist that our beloved companions receive the premium, natural pet products that they are promised, and we demand an explanation when those promises are proven empty. Best Friends Pet Care

Choosing a veterinarian for your pet is much like selecting a physician for yourself: the doctor must meet your needs. For years, the veterinary and animal welfare community has been working to educate pet owners about the benefits of spaying or neutering for family pets. A large number of dog and cat owners continue to skip this important health care action for the family dog or cat because of misinformation. The news is full of stories about the H1N1 virus and the importance of being vaccinated. What dog owners may not know is that the family pet may also need a flu shot this year. Do you still count your pet’s age in “Dog years,” figuring one dog year equals seven human years? If so, it’s time to throw out that old one-to-seven rule of thumb.

How to keep your pets healthy and happy

Keeping a pet First Aid kit in your home and another in your car if you travel with your pets is not only wise, but might save the life of your beloved pet. It is somewhat challenging to figure out what items to include, especially if you have several pets of different species. Below are some suggestions from other experienced pet owners. First choose a container that is large enough to hold a good sized first aid kit, and that locks or fastens tightly to keep out rodents and insects. Be sure to mark the container and keep it in an easily accessed spot. A container of alcohol wipes and one of wet wipes such as are sold for cleaning baby bottoms. A styptic pencil for stopping small bleeds such as from a torn nail or claw. Should your pet pick up ticks, Vaseline covering the tick will usually cause it to release its hold without injecting further infection into the animal. A tube of antibiotic cream such as one of the triple antibiotics. Antibiotic cream can help stop bleeding from a small open wound, help to prevent infection in a wound that must be covered, lubricate between a bandage and the animals skin or feathers to prevent the wound from sticking to the bandage, and speed healing of the injury. Activated charcoal helps with indigestion, diarrhea and even poisoning. If you think your pet was poisoned, give it activated charcoal and take it immediately to the veterinarian. Medicines that treat any conditions that you know are common to your pets or with your pets’ species, and various sized syringes for administering medicines. Even if you are traveling when something happens, the vet who treats your sick or injured pet may need to phone your regular vet for information about your pet’s health history. Last but not least, keep a spare tank or cage to use for a hospital or isolation cage if needed.

Three Important Considerations

Domestic dogs health generally isn’t very good. So a ‘Heinz 57’ variety of dog is more likely to be healthier than a pedigree dog, all things considered. Humans select breeding on what the dog can do for us rather than on the natural health of dogs. Now, mainstream vets know little about the best dog food, as they have been taught well by the corporations. Let’s first appreciate what dogs need in the way of food, according to their evolution. Bear in mind that dogs have been evolving for many thousands of years, whereas humanity has only been creating pet food for the last half century or so – so who do you think has the greatest influence? Now let’s look at the typical ingredients of dog food. So the meat content of the typical dog food is unbalanced, is often contaminated, is far from fresh, is often high in fat and has been cooked, which alters protein and kills enzymes at the very least. Most people who are lucky enough to share their homes with a dog or two, rely exclusively on veterinary services for all their health care needs. The last important area that I believe contributes to poor dog health is their living conditions. So many domestic dogs are the only dog, often with the people out at work all day. Too often dogs, especially young dogs are confined to an outside kennel, to a room in a house, or worst of all, to a crate, because they destroy things when the humans are out. Feeding your dog naturally, according to their evolution can save you a great deal of heart-ache not to mention hard cash, as their health will be so much better. Discover what you need to know about natural dogs health. Finally, although not considered to be a part of health care, treating and training your dog as a dog will enhance their feeling of acceptance and therefore will have a direct impact on their health.

Canine Kidney Health

Since 2003 we have been helping dogs with our Canine Kidney Health Nutritional program. The Canine Kidney Health Nutritional Program works pretty much like a specialized diet giving different herbs 3 to 4 times a day, specialized home prepared meals and working with your Veterinarian to monitor your dog’s health and response to the diet. A dog with unhealthy kidney function will deteriorate over time if symptom management is your only approach. Symptoms of kidney failure are generally not visible until there is less than 25% of kidney function left. Canine kidney disease is a devastating and aggressive disease. Canine kidney disease is considered irreversible and canine kidney failure is usually considered fatal by conventional veterinary medicine. The Canine Kidney Health program comes in where conventional treatment leaves off. These toxins all get ingested into our pets’ bodies and can lead to liver disease, heart disease, kidney disease and cancer among many other serious and life threatening illnesses. The first step you must take in the fight against canine kidney disease is stop giving your dog toxins. The only true improvements in health we have seen have been realized in dogs that were fed exclusively home prepared meals as required in all of our natural healing programs. The Canine Kidney Health program uses an array of therapies, herbs and whole foods to restore your loved one to good health. I have given her the aluminum hydroxide, the fluids and the azodyl too, and for good measure I have had acupuncture and given her Chinese herbs recommended by my holistic vet, but I am absolutely sure that the improvement has been primarily do to the Canine Kidney Health program. The Canine kidney Health Program is organized in 3 week cycles. With your order you will receive a copy of our Canine Kidney Health Program Handbook. Try to educate yourself on the stages and symptoms of canine kidney disease.

Refusing to euthanize a healthy pet

Late on a Tuesday morning Mr. Howard came to see him with his 6-year-old Labrador Blackie. Blackie was his lovable self but was gaining some weight. The following day he informed Mr. Howard that Blackie was just fine but that he had an underactive thyroid. The treatment was an inexpensive, small tablet that could be hidden in Blackie’s food. Mr. Howard made an appointment three days later to bring Blackie back in and talk to Dr. Hauser about what he called some “Personal issues.” When the owner and dog arrived, Dr. Hauser again explained the hypothyroid condition he had discovered. Blackie had become an added expense that he could no longer afford, nor could he provide an alternate home for him. Dr. Hauser suggested placing Blackie in temporary foster care until Mr. Howard got back on his feet. Mr. Howard said that after much soul-searching he’d decided to have Blackie put to sleep, rather than put him through the trauma of parting with his owner and his home. Blackie was a vibrant Lab with a minor thyroid problem. As a result of his shelter efforts and networking within the shelter community, Dr. Hauser was sure he could relocate Blackie to a caring home. Mr. Howard listened but told Dr. Hauser that Blackie was his dog, his mind was made up and that euthanasia was a humane option. Dr. Hauser decided to tell Mr. Howard that he could not in good conscience put Blackie to sleep. In this case Blackie was going to be euthanized, just not by Dr. Hauser. Another veterinarian may have felt that the owner was resigned to the euthanasia and that it was not fair to put Blackie through the stress of being taken to another strange clinic or shelter for the inevitable. I feel that if Blackie’s owner was determined to euthanize his dog and I had exhausted every option, I would have put Blackie to sleep rather than expose him to a fate that I could not caringly oversee.

Choosing a Healthy Dog Treat

The trick with choosing a healthy dog treat is picking one that you can give your dog without compromising his diet. If you give a lot of treats during the day, you may need to reduce the amount of food your dog eats at meals to avoid unhealthy weight gain. In that case, you’ll want to make certain that your dog treat choices are also nutritionally balanced. You don’t want to deprive your dog of nutrients he needs to give him treats he doesn’t. Many dog food manufacturers make treats that are similar to kibble, only in more interesting shapes or with different textures, which can be good choices in such situations. Are the treats meat based? Do they have a lot of added sugar or chemicals? Are there any notes on the package about how many treats are safe to give your dog each day? Remember that obesity is just as big a health problem in dogs as it is in humans. If your dog has a tendency to overeat and isn’t prone to exercise, you’ll need to put more focus on finding healthy treats than you will if your dog is in better shape. If you’re looking to save money, then making your own natural dog food treats can also be a good option. You can also find an abundance of healthy dog recipes online including many for natural dog goodies. Choosing a healthy dog treat may sometimes seem like it involves a lot of compromise, but it doesn’t have to. You can find natural dog food treats that are not only yummy but good for your dog’s health. Personally, I always liked giving my dog carrots as a healthy treat. Plus, if I ever got too hungry to continue through my day, I could always eat them myself! How many natural dog food treats are YOU willing to stick in your mouth? Quick Tip: Remember that there are a lot of human foods that can be toxic to dogs, so be very careful about what kind of treats you give your pet. Some dangerous human foods include: chocolate, onions, garlic, grapes, and raisins, but you should make sure you know the other foods that are dangerous and poisonous to dogs.

About Us – Healthy Option Natural Pet Food

Healthy Option Pet Food is a small family run business that started 17 years ago with just a simple idea, to make pets healthy again. With already 25 years experience in the retail pet trade, something didn’t seem right. Looking for a natural dog food for your pet can be a bit of minefield, sometimes we can over look some of the basic principles of feeding our pets. Are the more expensive super premium pet foods worth the money? Why not buy cheap supermarket dog food? Is natural dog food the best way to go? Healthy Option Pet Food only use the finest natural ingredients including white rice and brown rice which is a digestible source of carbohydrates and fibre, we use real meat as the best protein source, we only use natural preservatives, vitamins and minerals. We also have a range of grain free dog food for dogs that are sensitive to grains. In many cases the first thing a vet will tell you to do is to feed boiled rice and chicken, then the health of the dog seems to improve, after which most people change the dog back onto their previous diet only for the problem to arise again. So at Healthy Option Pet Food we formulated a food that is based on boiled rice and chicken, it was back to basics. Feed the dog what they actually need and not ‘the junk’. Healthy Option Chicken and Rice was formulated first before the Lamb and Rice which followed shortly afterwards. The customers at the Healthy Option stores were seeing a massive improvement on the health of their animals by feeding a more natural dog food, bringing in to the stores letters of thanks. Health Option Mixer biscuit was then formulated for those who wanted to feed real meat, with highly digestible carbohydrates and a good source of oils and fats. Cat food, rabbit food, ferret food, dog treats all followed with same principles in mind. The food was only ever formulated for the needs of our own customers but with fantastic healthy animals, our customers told their friends and relatives about us. We give good honest advice to all our customers who have healthy happy animals.

I called it Scared Poopless: The Straight Scoop on Dog Care – not your average title and not your average dog care book. Read testimonials from dog care professionals and pet parents. “Imagine a book on canine health care that’s also fun to read. [It’s] packed with everything you need to know about giving your dog a happy and healthy life. A word of caution – Scared Poopless is written in such an attractive, conversational style, you may find it hard to put down!” Animal Wellness Magazine. Read the entire review of this acclaimed dog care book. We fail to give important supplements every dog needs to build and maintain health because they don’t come in pet food or multi-vitamin mixes. Our dogs’ ugly tear stains, bad breath and brown teeth are seen as cosmetic problems, not the health problems they are. Our chubby dogs may be cute, but overweight dogs face grave health risks including early death, diabetes, increased joint and tendon damage, and much more. What blood tests does your dog need, and when does your dog need them?4. Need a crash course in anesthesia safety or post-surgical rehab? Does your dog really need that blood test, or that surgery? Want to protect your dog if something happens to you? Our. Ding unnecessary shots your dog may not need will probably pay for the bookand then some! Your satisfaction. If you have any concerns about your dog’s health, please contact your veterinarian’s office immediately.
