Gerbil Health

Observe what all your gerbils are doing at least once a day: If a gerbil is huddled in a corner all by itself, its fur is all bedraggled and it looks miserable, then something is definitely wrong and you should seek immediate veterinary treatment. If the gerbil does not immediately seize on it and eat it, then you should be very worried. Hold your gerbils close to your ear: If a gerbil makes a clicking or rasping noise, it probably has a chest infection. Examine your gerbil’s nose: Sore noses are one of the most common gerbil health problems. Examine your gerbil’s teeth: Often the first time an owner realizes there is a tooth problem, is when the gerbil rapidly loses weight but otherwise appears healthy.

The gerbil cannot gnaw and the remaining teeth may grow too long and require trimming. Examine your gerbil’s tail: It comes as something of a shock when your gerbil suddenly emerges minus half of its tail. The same thing can happen if you pick up the gerbil by the tip of its tail or if the gerbil gets its tail trapped underneath something. Within a few days, the bone just withers away and the gerbil is left with half a tail. Examine how your gerbil moves around: A tendency to go round in circles or hold its head in a tilted position suggest an inner ear problem.

Once a gerbil has developed a head-tilt, it will never go away. In the unlikely event of your gerbil having diarrhea, your nose will soon alert you to the problem.

Ticks can spread diseases to both people and pets: Lyme disease, ehrlichiosis, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, anaplasmosis, tularemia, and babesiosis. Antifreeze is extremely dangerous to pets because most types appear appetizing to dogs. Antifreeze poisoning is one of the most common forms of poisoning in pets. Even if the chemicals don’t poison your pet, large amounts of fertilizer could result in gastrointestinal or pancreatic problems. Snail bait can be a major risk for dogs and cats and is a more common source of poisoning than you may expect.

Just like people, some dogs can have an allergic reaction to bee stings, especially if stung by multiple bees. Talk to your vet about how you can keep your pup safe from bee stings, and what to do if your dog is stung. Your dog may be accustomed to taking walks over ice covered lakes, rivers and ponds. Horse dewormers often contain ivermectin; it’s also used in small doses to kill parasites in dogs. Toxicity can occur if a dog is given an excessive dose of the medication.

The dog days of summer may be long gone, but you can still pamper your pooches during the lingering heat of a South Florida fall by letting them frolic at two water parks on dogs-only days. One of Broward County Parks and Recreation’s most popular programs for the past dozen years, the K9 Water Festivals, returns this year with three weekend events in October. The series kicks off on October 4 and 5 at Castaway Island at T.Y. Park in Hollywood, which also has events on October 11 and 12. Admission is $5 per dog per 50-minute session, with sessions beginning on the hour from 9 a.m.

to 4 p.m. Only dogs weighing 25 pounds or less will be permitted for the final session of each day. Donations of dog and cat food, treats, blankets, and toys will be accepted on behalf of the homeless animals at Broward County shelters. Broward County Animal Care and Adoption will also be on site with dogs available for adoption. A few rules apply: All dogs must be off leash when inside the facility and must be sociable and well behaved.

Proof of current rabies vaccination and county license tag are required. Other than lifeguards, no humans will be allowed inside the water playgrounds. Finally, dogs are limited to no more than two sessions per day, and dogs must be at least 4 months of age to participate. The parks’ regular weekend and holiday gate entrance fee of $1.50/person will be in effect for these events.

Pet Weight Loss Ideas, Vet Advice, Resources

Here’s how to keep your pet’s weight in check. If a pet already has a health condition, obesity makes the problem that much harder to manage. Being able to feel some ribs is a sign that your pet is at a healthy weight. If your pet has fat deposits over his back and at the base of its tail, or if he lacks a waist or an abdominal tuck, chances are that he has a weight problem. Veterinarians typically use a measurement called a body condition scale or body condition score to assess whether a pet is underweight, overweight, or just right.

Although commercially produced pet foods must meet AAFCO nutritional standards, which ensure that they contain protein, fats, carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals, and water in certain proportions, treats are often not nutritionally complete and balanced and can contain a lot of calories. By keeping an eye on what your pet is eating each day, you and your vet will easily be able to come up with a plan if it turns out your pet needs to shed a few pounds. Not only do you need to feed your pet the right amount of food, but also the right type for his species, age, and size. Ask a veterinary professional for advice on what products offer the right nutritional mix for your pet, and how much and how often to feed. Most diets come with feeding guidelines, but every pet is different.

Consult your veterinarian before feeding any human food to your pet. By law, the pet food manufacturer must list the ingredients by weight.

Your Pet Insurance Guide

They now have only one policy, but it gives pet owners more options when customizing maximums, deductibles, and copays. Traditionally, most companies apply the deductible first and then the copay when determining how much to reimburse the policyholder for a claim, but Petplan is one of several companies that applies the corresponding copay before the deductible. Deductible – They now offer an annual deductible in addition to a per-condition deductible. They are the first company to offer a choice between these two types of deductibles. With Petplan’s per-condition deductible, you’ll pay it for each new condition your pet is diagnosed with, and if it is a chronic condition, you’ll pay it again in each policy year your pet is treated for that condition.

Ideally, a per-condition deductible should be payable only once for that particular condition for the life of the pet. They offer more choices of deductible – from $100 to $2500. I was actually wondering when a company was going to offer a deductible higher than $1000. Higher deductible policies only make sense when choosing an annual deductible. As you can see in the quote above, you’ll only save about $40 annually on your premium when getting the per-condition deductible vs.

the annual deductible. In my opinion, an annual deductible is preferable because it is more predictable and easier to budget for. I don’t know why anyone would logically select the per-condition deductible.

Health Risks of Having a Pet

Dogs and cats that spend time in wooded areas may pick up tiny ticks. Some ticks carry Lyme disease, which can be hard to detect and diagnose, causing long-term problems, such as irregular heartbeat, arthritis, and impaired brain function. “Always check animals after time in the woods,” says Swanson. Do a full-body inspection on your kids and yourself, too. Remove ticks from animals and humans in the same way: Disinfect the bite area with rubbing alcohol and pull the tick straight up and off with tweezers. That way, if your child or pet becomes ill over the next few weeks, you’ll have the tick for testing. When removing ticks from pets, it’s helpful to have a second person to help prevent the animal from twisting or jerking.

Agriculture Victoria

Victoria has one of the highest rates of pet ownership in the world. Owning pets can be a lot of fun, and pets can provide us with company, stress relief and unconditional love. Pet ownership also teaches children responsibility and helps them develop their social and nurturing skills. Cats and dogs can live for over 10 years, so it’s important that we understand the responsibilities we have for our pets over their entire life span. Responsible pet ownership involves choosing the right pet for your lifestyle, complying with the law, caring for your pet’s health and ensuring your pet doesn’t cause problems in the community. Being a responsible owner ensures you and your pet can enjoy a long and happy relationship.
