Cushing’s Disease in Dogs: The Disease Your Vet is Likely to Miss

Cushing’s disease was originally diagnosed in a human in 1932 by Dr. Harvey Cushing. The middle layer of your pet’s adrenal gland, the zona fasciculata, can over produce glucocorticoids and create what is traditionally known as ‘typical’ Cushing’s disease. If your pet has taken prednisone, he is predisposed to acquire Cushing’s disease. Hands down, the most common form of Cushing’s disease in pets is the pituitary dependent form.

In my practice, most Cushing’s dogs get referred after a misdiagnosed liver disease. If your pet’s ALP value is elevated, ask your vet if this could be the start of Cushing’s disease. If your pet has symptoms of Cushing’s disease but you can’t afford the expensive tests required for a definitive diagnosis, you can ask your veterinarian to do a urine test called the urine cortisol to creatinine ratio test, or the UCC.The UCC must be run using the first urine of the morning. If your dog’s urine cortisol is within the normal range he most likely does not have typical Cushing’s disease. The CiALP is a simple and effective screening test to determine whether your pet is starting down the path toward Cushing’s disease.

Dogs don’t suddenly wake up and have Cushing’s disease. Dogs headed toward Cushing’s disease, but not yet completely Cushingoid are in the gray zone I consider your dog as having pre-Cushing’s syndrome when he exhibits symptoms of Cushing’s disease, but is still able to pass an ACTH stim test. Finding an integrative vet if your pet has Cushing’s symptoms is critical, as this can mean the difference between resolving the problem before it starts, or managing the disease in your pet for the remainder of his life.

FACT CHECK: Is PETA Stealing and Killing Pets?

CLAIM. PETA workers are stealing family pets and euthanizing them. RATING WHAT’S TRUE. PETA associates have been involved in some incidents involving the alleged theft and/or euthanization of family pets. WHAT’S FALSE.

PETA workers do not routinely lure pets away from families for the sole purpose of euthanizing the animals. Rumor circulating in the rescue world that PETA is rounding up healthy pets and killing them wholesale without trying to find homes for them. In at least two cases, PETA workers have been arrested in incidents involving the taking of companion animals that were not subsequently surrendered to shelters. WARNING: PETA may be in your neighborhood rounding up animals to kill. Shortly afterward, a PETA attorney called and informed the family that Maya was dead.

PETA had killed her. In the last 11 years, PETA has killed 29,426 animals. Harris, who was driving a PETA van, and co-worker Carrie Beth Edwards were accused of stealing the dog and charged with felony theft. In the last 12 years, PETA has killed 31,250 companion animals. It is a lie because rescue groups, individuals, and veterinarians have come forward stating that the animals they gave PETA were healthy and adoptable and PETA insiders have admitted as much, one former intern reporting that he quit in disgust after witnessing perfectly healthy puppies and kittens in the kill room.

Aside from those two incidents, we’ve found no evidence supporting the claim that PETA regularly takes household pets from their homes and euthanizes them.

Vaccinations

Our pets offer us love, affection and friendship unconditionally; they are an important part of our lives and our families. Just like any other family member their health and well-being is no doubt imperative to you. To safeguard your pet from potentially serious and sometimes fatal diseases Greencross Vets recommend a tailored preventative healthcare program for every pet. Your pet’s tailored program includes vaccinations. Like they say ‘prevention is better than a cure’, and it is no different with the diseases that can affect our dogs and cats.

Most of these diseases are viral and do not respond well to medication. For this and other reasons we strongly recommend vaccinations. Generally puppies and kittens require an initial series of three vaccines followed by an annual booster to ensure ongoing protection from disease. At Greencross Vets, with every vaccination a comprehensive physical examination is given. Your veterinary surgeon will review your pets medical file, and in collaboration with you the pet owner, decide exactly which vaccine program is appropriate depending on the age and health of your canine or feline friend.

Unvaccinated pets are at risk of contracting serious and fatal diseases. You can protect your dog or cat from contracting these diseases by maintaining the vaccination program recommended by your Greencross pet care team.

The Health Benefits Of Owning A Pet «

Pets are an important part of our lives and can make a difference in our health. In assisted living communities it has been found that pets provide many health benefits. This month, Simply55.com magazine published an interesting article about pet ownership and health. Thought you’d find it a great read. The Health Benefits of Owning a Pet.

Taking care of a furry friend may require your time, money, and energy, but there are payoffs to having a pet in your home. The research shows that having a pet can benefit both your physical and mental well-being. Having a pet may improve your physical health, according to research. A study published in a 1991 edition of the Journal of the Royal Society of Medicine followed pet owners for a 10-month period after they brought home either a dog or a cat, and a group of individuals without pets served as a control. Both dog and cat owners experienced fewer minor health issues during the first month of having a pet, and dog owners experienced a decrease in health issues for the entire length of the 10-month study.

The relationship between pet ownership and improved health may be a result of physical activity. A study published in 2008 in the Journal of Physical Activity and Health produced similar results, finding that dog owners were more likely than those who did not own dogs to walk for leisure. A study published a year later in the same journal found that dog owners completed significantly more moderate and vigorous physical activity than those who did not own dogs, and they spent less time being sedentary than those without dogs.

Health Certificate to Transport Your Dog or Cat Yourself

If your pet is not traveling to Italy, then you can select the country your pet is traveling to by selecting a pet passport for another country. The instructions will also help to avoid having your pet denied entry, put into quarantine or returned to your country of origin. If your dog, cat or ferret is entering Italy from a rabies-free country or rabies-controlled-country, it will need a 15 digit ISO compliant pet microchip, then a rabies vaccination at least 21 days prior to transport*. If your pet’s microchip is not ISO compliant, you should carry a microchip scanner. If your pet is entering Italy from a high-rabies country, it must also have a rabies blood titer test done no sooner than 30 days after vaccination and at least 90 days prior to transport.

If you or your designated representative are not traveling with or within 5 days of your pet, then a commercial EU health certificate will be required. Microchip Scanner – Recommended if your pet’s microchip is not ISO compliant. Completed with your veterinarian, this document will display all your pet’s vaccinations on one sheet for easier customs clearance. If you purchase our instructions and forms prior to 30 days before you travel, please check back with us to make sure there have been no changes in the rules or forms required to take your pet to Italy. Find more information on importing your pet to Italy.

We cannot offer refunds on pet passport packages unless there is a problem with the information or forms provided. Pet Crates – IATA compliant for auto or airline travel.

Selecting Safe Pets

Caring for pets can boost self-esteem, prevent loneliness, and even lower heart rate and blood pressure in some people. Selecting the right pet is a serious decision that family members should make together. Many shelters and pet stores actually don’t allow purchases or adoptions of pets around the holidays because, far too often, animals are returned when families haven’t thought through all of the responsibilities of taking care of the pet. If you’re set on getting a pet for a birthday or the holidays, the Humane Society of the United States and the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals suggests first buying and wrapping some pet supplies as gifts, then selecting the pet as a family. Although the animals your child sees in the woods or parks may be cute to look at, they can be dangerous as pets – they aren’t used to being around people and may carry diseases that can be transmitted to your child.

Just because you can buy a pet from the pet store doesn’t mean it’s safe for homes with kids. If you live in a wooded area, check your pets regularly for ticks. Common domesticated animals that can make good family pets include cats, dogs, rabbits, birds, and fish. Teach kids how to handle and pick up pets – to never squeeze them too tight, drop them, fall on them, or pick them up too fast. Teach kids never to pet or try to play with an animal they don’t know, even if it’s someone’s family pet.

Teach kids to wash their hands with soap and water after handling pets. Don’t keep undomesticated animals as house pets.

Healthy Pets Northwest – The natural alternative for Pet Food and Supplies

Portland is in the middle of construction season, and so it seems is Healthy Pets Northwest. This season we have been primarily working our Hawthorne and Multnomah Village stores, but have not forgotten Woodstock. Hawthorne Store Reset Customers coming into our Hawthorne store are noticing some big changes in the store’s layout and use of space. We have removed the old grocery store type of fixtures and replaced them with industrial pipe frames and wood shelves. Displays in the middle of the store have been updated to make them more functional and appealing.

We have changes coming so please stop in and check them out. Multnomah Village Updates At our Multnomah Village store the first new item most customers will see is sign above the front door. While it is new for us, we are glad to say that it is actually recycled from the Alberta store. Don’t be surprised if you show up one day and the store is a different color because we plan to have the building painted in August. Woodstock Deep Freeze Freezer space for raw foods and frozen treats is very tight at the Woodstock store.

To alleviate the crowding, we will be adding a three-door, glass-front freezer. It will give us a lot more space to meet the growing demand for raw pet foods.

Keeping Your Aging Pet Healthy

A senior dog or cat should have a physical examination by a veterinarian at least twice a year, and blood work at least annually. Increased sleeping is often a clue that the dog or cat is not feeling well. Metabolic diseases are often the cause of increased sleeping, as is cardiac disease. A dog who is refusing walks is most likely not feeling well, and there’s no reason his/her age should prevent us from trying to help. Everything from hormonal imbalances, to kidney disease, to inflammatory bowel disease, to cancer, can be associated with changes in food intake.

Related to food intake is the issue of water intake. Older dogs and cats don’t change their water intake just because they’re old-or bored. Kidney disease can be associated with increased water intake at the beginning, and decreased water intake later on. Increased water intake is associated with diabetes, hormone gland dysfunction and infections. Decreased water intake can be associated with heart disease, cancer and pain.

Retinal hemorrhage is associated with high blood pressure, as well as certain viral diseases. Regarding hearing in the older dog or cat, the cause is indeed most likely age-related.

About Pet Rats

Many health problems can be prevented by making sure to feed your rat the best diet possible, by providing optimum housing, plenty of exercise, mental enrichment, excellent veterinary care and lots of love. While I wish I could say rats are low maintenance and hardly ever have medical problems, I have not found that to be the case. The last six of my rats have all had medical problems that were completely atypical, causing my veterinarians to consult with experts in rat diseases and medical treatments. Many people aren’t prepared for how much it costs to take care of their pets. I used to work at the front desk in a veterinary hospital that saw exotic pets including rats.

I would guess I spend at least $500 per rat each year on exams, medicine and surgery when it’s needed.

Gerbil Health

Observe what all your gerbils are doing at least once a day: If a gerbil is huddled in a corner all by itself, its fur is all bedraggled and it looks miserable, then something is definitely wrong and you should seek immediate veterinary treatment. If the gerbil does not immediately seize on it and eat it, then you should be very worried. Hold your gerbils close to your ear: If a gerbil makes a clicking or rasping noise, it probably has a chest infection. Examine your gerbil’s nose: Sore noses are one of the most common gerbil health problems. Examine your gerbil’s teeth: Often the first time an owner realizes there is a tooth problem, is when the gerbil rapidly loses weight but otherwise appears healthy.

The gerbil cannot gnaw and the remaining teeth may grow too long and require trimming. Examine your gerbil’s tail: It comes as something of a shock when your gerbil suddenly emerges minus half of its tail. The same thing can happen if you pick up the gerbil by the tip of its tail or if the gerbil gets its tail trapped underneath something. Within a few days, the bone just withers away and the gerbil is left with half a tail. Examine how your gerbil moves around: A tendency to go round in circles or hold its head in a tilted position suggest an inner ear problem.

Once a gerbil has developed a head-tilt, it will never go away. In the unlikely event of your gerbil having diarrhea, your nose will soon alert you to the problem.

Ticks can spread diseases to both people and pets: Lyme disease, ehrlichiosis, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, anaplasmosis, tularemia, and babesiosis. Antifreeze is extremely dangerous to pets because most types appear appetizing to dogs. Antifreeze poisoning is one of the most common forms of poisoning in pets. Even if the chemicals don’t poison your pet, large amounts of fertilizer could result in gastrointestinal or pancreatic problems. Snail bait can be a major risk for dogs and cats and is a more common source of poisoning than you may expect.

Just like people, some dogs can have an allergic reaction to bee stings, especially if stung by multiple bees. Talk to your vet about how you can keep your pup safe from bee stings, and what to do if your dog is stung. Your dog may be accustomed to taking walks over ice covered lakes, rivers and ponds. Horse dewormers often contain ivermectin; it’s also used in small doses to kill parasites in dogs. Toxicity can occur if a dog is given an excessive dose of the medication.

If you have any questions or concerns about spring pet hazards, you should always visit or call your vet – they are your best resource to ensure the health and well-being of your pets. Thank you to Pet Health Network for sharing with us this great info.

Pet Health and Nutrition

This field developed from the 1950s and espoused the theory that many modern chronic diseases were due to a plethora of toxins in the environment and environmental allergies1. Leaky Gut was and is said to be caused by damage to the gut lining which allows abnormal absorption of bacteria, toxins and gut proteins, and leads to development of a very large number of chronic medical conditions. Diseases that are said to be initiated or worsened by a Leaky gut include environmental and food allergies, arthritis of several types, eczema, chronic fatigue syndrome, inflammatory bowel disease, pancreatic disease, migraines, autism, celiac disease and gluten intolerance, and fibromyalgia. The gut is viewed as one important gateway for toxins and allergens from the environment, and constant exposure to these irritants were thought to cause gut pathology, leading to a vicious cycle of gut damage absorption of toxins, bacteria and abnormally large intraluminal proteins directly into portal and systemic circulation immune activation and immune-mediated diseases àdeterioration of gut barrier, and so on, over and over again. The pathogenesis of leaky gut is said to include: Altered GI microflora.

The intestinal microflora have many critical functions, including detoxifying some xenobiotics, maintaining an intraluminal environmental that discourages growth of pathogenic bacterial, maintaining the gut’s tight junctions and barrier function, and dialoguing with the immune tissues of the gut. Food allergies Damaged gut mucosal cells become unable to digest food normally, or to detoxify environmental xenobiotics Drugs that cause direct damage to the gut mucosa, such as NSAIDs and steroids, hastened the development of a hyperpermeable gut. Supplementing probiotics Correcting possible nutrient deficiencies with a variety of vitamins and minerals Treating yeast overgrowth Addressing the quality of fat in the diet to emphasize less inflammatory fatty acids Improving gut cell production and turnover with l-glutamine Just as environmental medicine doctors had reported, many veterinarians using these methods noted dramatic results when pets were treated using the same principles. The final results are the same – invasion into the bloodstream by gut microbes and activation of the immune system – but in the case of critically ill patients, the course of the problem was more rapid and easier to recognize. They are: Oxidative stress Hypoxia Tissue acidosis Nitric oxide – an cell-signallying molecule that influences circulation, and has been shown to have deleterious effects if present in the gut in abnormally high OR low concentrations.

Let’s look at what I would consider a typical veterinary patient who is a candidate for management of a hyperpermeable gut. Both conventional and alternative medicine are postulating similar mechanisms for the role of the gut in all disease.

Pet Health

Whether your pet is up against a neurological condition, nervous system or immune system issue, ALS or AIDS diagnosis, a thyroid problem, cancer, chronic UTIs, lipomas, allergies, hot spots, teeth issues, bad breath, or deficiencies of any kind, there are steps that you can take to support your animal through their health struggles and help them to be the healthiest they can be. There are a number of health issues you have to watch out for as a pet owner, and because your pet can’t describe the pain or problems they may be experiencing, it is essential that you surround yourself and your pet with proper support. If you don’t have a pet, but you scratch the back of your neighbor’s dog or pet your friend’s cat, you are still stimulating your immune system. If you choose to feed your dog, cat, or other animal grains, make sure the grains are non-GMO. If your pet has serious lipoma issues, keeping his or her diet completely grain-free may be ideal during the healing process.

Sometimes pets can grow fond of one food and not be very receptive to dietary changes, but if you are working to rid your pet of hot spots, switching up his or her food is the best course of action. The mineral composition inside these bones can transform the health of your dog, cat or other carnivorous pet. If you’ve always fed your pet cooked meat and veggies, and have never encountered food-related health issues, you can definitely continue providing your pet with a cooked diet, with the exception of cooked bones. Bring in raspberries, blackberries, bananas, wild blueberries, papaya, and any other fruits you think your dog or pet might like. If you’re on the hunt for the right kind of high quality supplements that matter and can make a great difference in your pet’s health, check out the Medical Medium page dedicated to preferred pet products.

A regular Hass avocado is okay for pets to eat, but other varieties of avocados, such as those grown in the West Indies and the larger avocado varieties found in Florida are not safe for your pet. As many pet owners already know, keeping your dog or cat away from chocolate is critical. It is best to stick to alcohol-free brands for the health of your pet.

Pet and Care

The exposure to changing weather conditions and different seasonal challenges further increases the risk of irritations, minor injuries and infections. This mostly goes unnoticed until becoming a real problem, causing discomfort, pain and even affecting the normal movement of your pet. PawCare is antiseptic, heals minor injuries and reduces the risk of irritations and infections. Natural Jojoba Oil and Allantoin provide moisturising care and have a cell regenerating effect. Clear Shiny Eyes are a sign of your pet’s health and well-being.

The sensitive pet eyes need gentle care: wind, dust, debris and loose hair cause tearing. The resulting discharge combined with dirt and bacteria accumulates in the corners of the eye and can lead to infections that can cause discomfort and pain. Another common reaction of sensitive pet eyes is the development of tear stains which is especially unesthetic on light fur. EyeCare cleans and protects the sensitive eyes with gentle care and without irritation. The innovative gel mass absorbs discharge and harmful foreign particles by simply pressing on the corner of the eye.

EyeCare is antiseptic and actively prevents infections and the development of tear stains, by supporting the self-cleaning effect of the eyes. Natural Camomile Oil soothes infections and irritations.

Was walking past Seaholm after a jog with my pups and happened to see they had a self serve dog wash… Decided to pop in on a whim and treat the boys to nice bath that wouldn’t end with me being soak…ed and covered in dog hair for once… Totally worth the 32 bucks. Staff was great, and even offered to help if I needed it. Everyone else was just as helpful and they even gave me a few treats to coax the dogs into the tub.

S are available for pre-bath brushing… The soap and conditione. R they provide left Phineas and Scout SUPER soft, and smelling great… They also provide ear cleaner, toothpaste. A lavender scented holistic flea and tick spray, as well as a wide array of scented spray on conditione.

Y, a few towels and a hilarious blow dryer The only issue I really had was that when I did use the blow dryer, it kicked up quite a bit of hair in the room and made me feel like I was in one of those game show cash grab booths, but instead of $100 bills, it was just dog hair :/That probably has more to do with me washing 2 dogs, and drying them both off at the very end instead of when they were still in the sink. Food and treats were also priced really well too, so we picked up a few things as a reward for all the good behavior.

Dog Diseases & Health Issues

Dogs and cats suffer a wide range of health issues, from simple colds to more serious chronic conditions, such as heart disease. Veterinarians get millions of visits from ailing dogs and cats every year. While some dog diseases and disorders may be easily treated by the vet, many require ongoing treatment and care to ensure your pet’s ongoing health and wellbeing. We have created a full database of common dog ailments to help you better understand some of the many health issues that your cat or dog may experience. This ranges from more obvious issues, like lethargy and general wellness issues, to more subtle dog health issues, including Cushing’s disease, kennel cough, sleep issues, as well as glaucoma and other forms of visual impairment.

Separation anxiety is one of the most common forms of pet anxiety, causing your dog or cat to suffer from various stress and behavior issues when left alone in the home. Dogs and cats may also suffer from depression, grief, and other mood disorders common to humans. Understanding the most common signs and symptoms, causes, and treatment options for cancer in dogs and cats can make the experience a little bit easier. Epilepsy is a neurological disorder that causes recurring seizures in your dog or cat. Many dog owners are concerned about heart and circulatory problems, such as congestive heart failure, heartworm disease, and issues with blood vessels.

Joint issues in pets are common, leading to pain, discomfort, and general mobility problems. Lyme disease is spread by ticks and is another common infection among dogs.

Healthy Pet Natural Pet Care Market

Experienced and knowledgeable staff at Healthy Pet to better serve your focus on healthy options for your pet to increase the vitality and quality of life for all pets. The history of how Healthy Pet came to be is more a story of evolution. From humble beginnings as a pet supply store in Texas, to a move across the country to the Chicagoland region, animals have always been a part of the story. Eventually, the opportunity to open another pet supply store arose, and was met with much gusto. The products available were not enough to keep the store’s much beloved rottie, Pepper, thriving.

From Pepper, we learned our inspiration to do right by our pets, and although Pepper passed away in 2008, after 14 awesome years, her memory continues to inspire us to search for new ideas, new products to better serve our four legged community. After receiving her degree from UIUC, she returned as manager of Healthy Pet in 2004. Nicole loves working with people to create the healthiest and most engaging lives for our pets. Nicole’s dog, Gabi, a duck tolling retriever, is her inspiration. With the pet category growing as much as it is, Nicole looks at new products to bring in to better fulfill our pet’s lives.

She trains the staff to know the products, try them for themselves and their pets, and to recommend only what they believe in. Nicole highest priorities are the best selection, with the best pricing, with the best customer service.

Pets: Good for Your Health?

There’s no doubt that Americans love their pets. A new survey by the American Veterinary Medical Association shows that more than 57 percent of U.S. households own one or more animals. Sure, pets provide companionship and unconditional love. Many four-legged pets, especially dogs, can also get owners off the couch.

The AVMA survey found that nearly half of respondents considered their pets to be companions; only about 2 percent considered them to be property. Families with allergies can still get a pet if they can commit to allergy shots. Families may choose furless and featherless pets instead, like turtles, iguanas, fish and snakes. If you opt for a live animal, make sure to do plenty of research before you bring one home, and choose one whose personality, size and requirements fit your needs, abilities and living situation. Don’t think adding more pets will bring more health benefits.

Beck says that for many people one or two is plenty-more animals do not mean more health. Finally, as many benefits as pets bring, it’s important not to become too dependent on those animal companions, cautions psychologist Alan Entin, past president of the American Psychological Association’s division of family psychology. Though they make great companions, in the end pets are still no substitute for human friends and family.

Reportage “Quelles croquettes pour nos bêtes” : mon avis.

Can Cats Be Healthy Vegans?

This has launched a thousand pet food brands advertising correct nutrition for cats and dogs with no animal by-products, effectively making them vegans. Dogs evolved with a longer intestinal tract and different enzymes to digest plant matter, as detailed in a study of two vegan diets for cats in the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association1. With a shorter intestinal tract, cats have all the right ingredients for digesting raw meat very well. This makes cats uniquely incapable of staying healthy unless their diet includes those delicious chunks of meat. Essentially, without a steady diet of meat cats can experience severe malnutrition.

Despite the availability of alternative food brands advertising a vegan lifestyle for cats, a 2006 study in the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association revealed many owners share the belief that this lifestyle is not healthy for their feline friends3. These assumptions are generally correct, as cats who are fed a strict vegan diet lacking sufficient taurine, niacin, and arginine begin to break down their own muscle and organ tissue2. Cats suffering from malnutrition from an inadequate diet will be small in size, short-lived, and experience growing muscle weakness and blindness unless their diet is adjusted. An often-used solution for pet owners determined to feed cats a vegan diet is nutrition through supplementation. Even pro-vegan websites, such as Vegan Cats, do recommend including some meat in cat’s diets due to their susceptibility to urinary and kidney problems4.

Cutting out meat altogether, however much a cat’s owner likes it, is a personal choice a cat cannot make. While cats are capable of living off a supplemented vegan diet, it is not the healthiest choice for them.

Some veterinarians cite the pet food industry’s push to include better labeling on foods, including calories per serving, as an advance in helping with weight control. Others describe the print as too small and the calorie information unhelpful because calorie needs vary widely by breed, genetics and current weight. Many dogs and cats that are overweight will need their calories reduced by at least a third, according to the University of Florida’s Dr. Schmalberg. An average-size indoor cat needs between 150 to 200 calories per day to maintain weight, while dogs’ ideal weights are trickier to assess.

Experts also disagree on which type of food promotes better weight loss, wet or dry. Some data suggests wet food’s higher water and protein content carries more benefit because it reduces appetite, says Dr. Jonathan Stockman, who runs the clinical nutrition service at Colorado State University’s Veterinary Teaching Hospital, in Ft. Collins, Colo. But dry food has a higher fiber content, he says, so a similar argument can be made for that.

Other options, such as fat-blocking drugs or stomach-shrinking surgeries available to people, seldom play a part in veterinary medicine. Most veterinarians feel that weight loss can best be managed through diet. The goal is to get to a healthy weight before health issues take hold, veterinarians agree. Even though diabetes in cats, for example, can be reversed by aggressive dietary measures, says Dr. Lori Teller, a veterinarian at the Meyerland Animal Clinic in Houston, they work only with early diagnosis.

Diabetes in dogs, rarely related to obesity, is considered irreversible, she and others say, because insulin production shuts down completely.

Should You Sleep With Your Pet? Health Risks and Benefits

Perhaps fittingly, cats get to enjoy the lion’s share of the bedroom: Less than half of dogs get to share the bed, while 62% of cats sleep with their adult pet owners, and 13% of cats sleep with children, according to the National Pet Owners Survey by the American Pet Products Association. Americans reported pet co-sleeping arrangements more than any other country, with 53% of American pet owners sleeping with their cats, and 41% of American dog owners sharing the bed. In the mid-60 degrees Fahrenheit is ideal for quality sleep, so you may want to set the thermostat a few degrees cooler if you allow your pet to sleep by you in the bed.4. Pets aren’t exactly clean, but if you keep your pet up to date on vaccinations and flea medication and they’re otherwise healthy, you should be fine to sleep with your pet. Dogs have dreams just like we do, and kick, grunt and move in their sleep during REM sleep.

Letting your pet sleep in the bed can prove problematic for couples. Larger dogs sleep more than smaller breeds, and puppies may sleep up to 20 hours per day to support their development. Dogs also experience a sleep cycle just like humans, beginning with slow wave light sleep and ending with REM sleep. They enter REM sleep much sooner, and they spend only 10 percent of their total sleep time in REM, since their sleep is often interrupted by activity or noise. Humans, on the other hand, spend about 25 percent of their sleep in REM and require about 7 to 7.5 hours of sleep on average per night.

Cats sleep 15 hours on average per day, but may sleep up to 20 hours depending on their age. Birds experience much shorter sleep cycles than mammals, as short as just a few minutes in NREM and several seconds in REM sleep.
