What are the health benefits of pet ownership?

We’ve long loved dogs for being man’s best friend, but not so well known is that our pets can actually make us physically and mentally healthier. Just the presence of our pets can lift our spirits and help us relax. Research has shown that owning a pet can have a number of physical health benefits. Increased cardiovascular health Increased physical activity. Fewer visits to the doctor Growing up with a dog during infancy may help to strengthen the immune system and may reduce the risk of allergies Children who have pets are less likely to miss days of school due to illness. The joy of having a pet isn’t new to most Australians; we have one of the highest rates of pet ownership in the world. In fact our pets are such positive influences on our lives that one study found that Australian ownership of cats and dogs saved approximately $3.86 billion in health expenditure over one year. Research has shown that owning a pet can have a number of psychological benefits. A study of school children showed that pet owners were more popular but also seemed more empathetic. Those who have pets including children or adolescents have been shown to have higher self-esteem. Teenagers who own pets have a more positive outlook on life and report less loneliness, restlessness, despair and boredom. Pet owners report less depression and appear to cope with grief, stress and loss better than non-pet owners. Pets enhance social connectedness and social skills. Are great conversation starters! Pets are also great caregivers. If you are considering owning a pet be sure you contact your local RSPCA. You can view some of the animals available for adoption at the RSPCA on the Adoptapet website.

Association of Avian Veterinarians

Even branches with leaves placed on or against the outside of the cage for the bird to pull through the wires is “Occupational therapy.” Housing The largest cage that can be accommodated in the home is recommended for birds that are expected to be confined most of the time. The cage must be strong enough to resist bending or dismantling by the bird, made of nontoxic material, and designed for safety and ease of cleaning. In most cases, the cage would need to be wider than it is tall to accommodate stretched wings; however, ample height should be provided as well for long-tailed birds. Healthy birds can easily approach the food and water bowls; therefore, it is not necessary in most cases to place bowls directly beside the perch. Birds often overeat or chew on food dishes out of boredom. Placing the food at the opposite end of the cage from the water will ensure that the bird gets some exercise between eating and drinking. Foraging is a great addition or alternative to food bowls for healthy birds. Ask your avian veterinarian for recommendations on feeding your bird. Many birds benefit from the availability of a retreat inside the cage for a sense of privacy. Humidity Pet birds can adapt to a wide range of humidity levels, although birds native to subtropical climates may benefit from occasional increased humidity in the home. As the new feather emerges, the bird may groom at the covering of the feather. Most birds enjoy daily bathing, and spend a great deal of time keeping the feathers in prime condition. If the bird resists any form of bathing, a daily misting with clean water will help encourage normal grooming. New birds should visit an avian veterinarian as soon after purchase as possible.

Pet Supplies

Cats, dogs, fish and birds are among the most popular pets to have. When you’re thinking of bringing a new pet home, there are a few important things to prepare for so your pet and everyone in the house is comfortable and healthy. If the new pet is a first, then check out what we have to offer to ensure your pet has everything it needs to be happy and comfortable in its new home. Important supplies to have on hand for a new kitty include the all-necessary litter box, which should be large enough to allow the cat to fit in completely and turn around with ease. Cats have whiskers that are highly sensitive, and narrow bowls can be uncomfortable to them. Cats are very curious creatures, so keeping them active helps keep them out of mischief. Although cats sleep anywhere they want, a round or oval pet bed is ideal for a cat. Be aware of laws governing outdoor cats in your community, and the cat should have a collar with identification tags on it, including information like address or phone number. Choose cat food that mimics what a cat would eat in the wild, such as chicken and fish, making sure that they have the nutrients that cats need. Cats with fleas can benefit from collars or sprays that kill fleas without harming them. Dogs and puppies are usually much more energetic than cats, and time outside is vital to a dog’s health. Determine how much food you need to feed your dog in a normal meal and choose appropriate food and water bowls. The food should have all the nutrients a growing puppy and dog needs in its diet. Like cats, dogs need toys to play with to keep them occupied. We carry a complete line of pet and animal food and supplies for livestock and indoor pets at affordable prices too.

Rogz Pet Insurance

We know that pets are individuals and so we are introducing a new way of calculating your premium. The premium is calculated according to the risks associated with the insured Pet and is printed on the relevant Certificate of Insurance. In calculating the premium, we may consider the cover that you have chosen, where you and your pet permanently live as well as the species, breed, age and sex of your pet. What happens if an insured pet is given away or changes owners? The original owner will have to notify Rogz Pet Insurance of the change of ownership. The original owner will then be required to cancel their Pet’s cover on their policy and the new owner will send through an application form re-joining the pet under their name with new banking details. The new owner will receive a New Policy covering the Pet. The one calendar month waiting period will not apply unless there is a lapse in the monthly premium payment between Change of Ownership. A physical or bodily injury that happens accidentally to your pet as a result of external, violent and visible means. An Illness means an unexpected sickness or disease or any change to your pet’s normal healthy state, which is not caused by injury to your pet. Puppies and kittens are more likely to develop an illness or injury than an adult pet. We suggest insuring as soon as possible to avoid unexpected surprises that may result in a pre-existing exclusion on your policy, preventing your pet from getting full cover. Just because your pet isn’t a puppy or kitten doesn’t mean you can’t or shouldn’t get pet insurance. As pets age they get sicker and have more and higher vet bills than when they were young. As soon as your pet is 8 weeks of age they can be covered by Rogz Pet Insurance.

2001 NE Alberta St, Alberta Arts District, Portland, OR

In a town of amazing pet stores healthy pets stands out and is maybe the most amazing. Healthy pets can give you all kinds of recommendations if you want to deepen your knowledge and increase your options for optimal health for your dog. The judiciously-named Healthy Pets Northwest store in the heart of the Alberta Arts District is a locally-owned, small pet store any serious Portland pet lover should know. The team at Healthy Pets Northwest are remarkably open with their care and concern for a healthier pet lifestyle. Of course, to get that high-quality diet, it all comes at higher prices than you’re used to paying at the local mega pet chain. I’m not sure my dog should be eating healthier or more expensively than I am, but there’s no doubt Healthy Pets Northwest is a charming local pet store to find the information and products to give my dog the best care and health. Prices are competitive compared to other local pet stores. It’s a really unique pet store compared to the big giant companies. Walking in, to the right there are a variety of pet foods and dog treats in these containers you can choose from. There is a wall of pet toys to the left with a lot of options to choose from. I’m forever grateful…. Great neighborhood pet store. Staff is knowledgeable, friendly and enthusiastic about pets. Great selection of all the other pet supplies you’d need: toys, food, treats, training aids, etc at decent prices especially for a boutique type store. Heather says “Um…. hi Daniel! Um…. did you happen to leave a not so great review of Healthy Pets Northwest on Yelp??” They both had huge smiles on their faces. Glad to find my new favorite place to buy food for my pets.

Healthy pets, healthy people: How to avoid the diseases that pets can spread to people

Which pets can carry infection? Name of infection How does infection pass from pets to people? What happens if I get it? Tips for prevention Cats and dogs can also carry, and transmit Salmonella Campylobacter – most common bacterial cause of gastroenteritis worldwide. Human infections are usually caused not by pets, but by eating contaminated raw or undercooked meat, or by drinking unpasteurized milk. And can spread, “Cat scratch disease” A common skin infection, mostly affecting children, young adults, sometimes with gland swelling and/or fever. Teach your cat not to scratch and your children not to play roughly with pets. Even healthy dogs and cats may carry it, though diarrhea is especially common in puppies. Wash your hands, and make sure children wash hands, after contact with farm animals and pets. Pets with diarrhea should be seen by a vet for proper treatment. Pets can get rabies from saliva, if a wild animal bites them. Ringworm – different kinds of fungus that can cause rashFarm animals, pets and wild animals can carry fungal spores on their skin or hair. Cats and dogs are common carriers, and may have no symptoms of infection, especially in households with several pets or shelters. Dog Nutrition Tips

A balanced diet is critically important to your dog’s cell maintenance and growth and overall health. Barring any special needs, illness-related deficiencies, or instructions from your vet, your pet should be able to get all the nutrients he or she needs from high-quality commercial pet foods, which are specially formulated with these standards in mind. Dogs of different ages have different nutritional requirements. How much-or how little-should you be feeding your four-legged friend? Read on to learn what your pet’s body needs at the various stages of life. Nutrients are substances obtained from food and used by an animal as a source of energy and as part of the metabolic machinery necessary for maintenance and growth. There are the six essential classes of nutrients dogs need for optimum healthy living. If you’re responsible caring for puppies in the first few months of their lives, you’ll need to be prepared to move them from a diet of mom’s milk to regular puppy food. Adult dogs require sufficient nutrients to meet energy needs and to maintain and repair body tissues. The amount you feed your adult dog should be based on his or her size and energy output. Dogs begin to show visible age-related changes at about seven to 12 years of age. There are metabolic, immunologic and body composition changes, too. When feeding your older dog, the main objective should be to maintain health and optimum body weight, slow development of chronic disease and minimize diseases that may already be present. One of the most common pitfalls dog parents should watch out for is overfeeding. Attempts to shower our dogs with love by means of big meals and lots of tasty treats are sweet, but misguided. In dogs, as with humans, extra weight can lead to health problems.

Eddie’s healthy pet tips

View and Download the report here: EWG Eddies Pet Tips. Founded by Eddie – just another dog on a mission – and in conjuction with research by Environmental Working Group, Pets is out to create a healthy environment for pets and people. Choose pet food without the chemical preservatives BHA, BHT and ethoxyquin, vary cats’ diets to limit their exposure to mercury in seafood, and choose organic or free-range ingredients rather than “By-products.” Use a faucet-mounted or pitcher filter to fill your pet’s water bowl. Replace older foam pet bedding, and replace or reupholster furniture with exposed or crumbling foam. Vacuum often with a HEPA-filter vacuum, and take off your shoes at the door to minimize your pets’ exposure to toxic chemicals in house dust. If you suspect your deck was made with arsenic-treated wood. If you suspect your deck was made with arsenic-treated wood, treat it with a sealant every six months and don’t let pets play or sleep underneath it. An overheated nonstick pan can kill pet birds, and it gives off chemicals that may be bad for other pets and people too. Care for your lawn without using insecticides, which may cause nervous system damage in pets that walk on the treated lawn, eat the grass, or breathe in the chemicals. Use kitty litter made of plant sources like wheat or recycled newspaper. Clay-based kitty litter is strip-mined, causing extreme environmental damage during extraction. Not only are flea collars generally ineffective, they’re also a source of constant toxic exposure for your pet and family. Instead, vacuum often and thoroughly, bathe your pet regularly, and ask your vet or local pet store about safer flea treatments and repellents. Did you know that 63% of all households in the US have pets?

Best Friends Pet Care

Choosing a veterinarian for your pet is much like selecting a physician for yourself: the doctor must meet your needs. For years, the veterinary and animal welfare community has been working to educate pet owners about the benefits of spaying or neutering for family pets. A large number of dog and cat owners continue to skip this important health care action for the family dog or cat because of misinformation. The news is full of stories about the H1N1 virus and the importance of being vaccinated. What dog owners may not know is that the family pet may also need a flu shot this year. Do you still count your pet’s age in “Dog years,” figuring one dog year equals seven human years? If so, it’s time to throw out that old one-to-seven rule of thumb.

Animal Health Foundation of California

The loss of a beloved pet companion can be just as hard as losing a human friend or family member. Sometimes we are able to take comfort in companionship of our to pets when human relationships fail us. Losing that unconditional love and affection can be heartbreaking. Remembering your pet in an online memorial is a wonderful way to honor that bond. We create a pet memorial page in your special pet’s name when you donate to the AHF. You may specify the AHF program you wish to support with your memorial donation. If you don’t find the pet or family you are looking for, try browsing by letter or click on ‘View All’ to view entire selection.

How Pets Improve Your Health

In a study published in Clinical & Experimental Allergy, children who were exposed to pets before they were six months old were less likely to develop allergic diseases, hay fever, and eczema as they got older. “In the first year of life, babies who are exposed to dogs in the household are more likely not to have allergies, asthma, and fewer upper respiratory infections,” says Johnson. “If exposed at an early age to dander and allergens, we may be less reactive to them over time.” And kids who grow up around farm animals, dogs, or cats typically have stronger immune systems and a reduced risk of developing asthma or eczema.

Pesticide Poisoning in Pets

Thousands of poisonings are reported to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency each year. Many of those reports lack vital information, making it difficult to identify the cause of the problem. The National Pesticide Information Center strives to collect and document pesticide incidents in such a way that regulators can make informed decisions. When used according to the label directions, pesticides used around the home or on pets should pose little risk. Even careful use of a pesticide product can cause harm to a sensitive, ill, or injured animal.
