Animal Health Foundation of California

The loss of a beloved pet companion can be just as hard as losing a human friend or family member. Sometimes we are able to take comfort in companionship of our to pets when human relationships fail us. Losing that unconditional love and affection can be heartbreaking. Remembering your pet in an online memorial is a wonderful way to honor that bond. We create a pet memorial page in your special pet’s name when you donate to the AHF. You may specify the AHF program you wish to support with your memorial donation. If you don’t find the pet or family you are looking for, try browsing by letter or click on ‘View All’ to view entire selection.

How Pets Improve Your Health

In a study published in Clinical & Experimental Allergy, children who were exposed to pets before they were six months old were less likely to develop allergic diseases, hay fever, and eczema as they got older. “In the first year of life, babies who are exposed to dogs in the household are more likely not to have allergies, asthma, and fewer upper respiratory infections,” says Johnson. “If exposed at an early age to dander and allergens, we may be less reactive to them over time.” And kids who grow up around farm animals, dogs, or cats typically have stronger immune systems and a reduced risk of developing asthma or eczema.

Pet Health Market

Clotrimatop, a 1% Clotrimazole solution is typically prescribed for dogs suffering from different forms of fungal growth and it’s found that these particular fungi are responsive to this drug. It’s a proven, effective anti-fungal solution in any number of applications and has been used with a high degree of success on human patients as well as animals. Clotrimatop has received rave reviews from many patients who have found relief from the incessant itching, burning, cracking and general discomfort that typically accompany symptoms of fungal growth on different parts of the body. Clotrimatop is available in a 30mL plastic drip bottle and is recommended especially for animals with dermatological problems due to fungal growth, particularly in the ears. In humans, it’s been shown to work on ringworm, jock itch and athletes’ foot. Unlike the prevalent creams sold on the market for jock itch and athlete’s foot, this liquid solution actually works because it’s able to seep down and act on the areas being affected. One patient who wrote in describing her experiences stated that she had been suffering from ear fungus for a number of years, even though she had sought a variety of different treatments. Using the Clotrimatop 1% solution the first few times caused a certain amount of discomfort because her ears were literally raw from being rubbed and scratched so much. After that there was no more pain, no more scratching or rubbing, and the ear infections cleared up within a month’s time. If you have itchy ears, especially as the result of ear fungus, you really owe it to yourself to give this product a try. As one gentleman stated, “I know it’s for dogs, but fungus doesn’t discriminate.” If you look, you’ll find that many of the anti-fungal remedies sold for use on humans contain some of the same ingredients found in Clotrimatop. Because this is a product directed for use on dogs, the price is significantly lower than the one for the “Human” medicine. Clotrimazole seems to work well on dogs and humans, too. Offered by Butler Schein™ Animal Health, this is a recommended product.

Healthy Joints for Your Pets

No matter what the breed, be sure to balance how much you’re feeding your pets with how much exercise they get. Pets don’t often cry out when they’re suffering, so it’s up to you to look for the signs of joint pain, especially if you have breeds that are highly susceptible to arthritis, have pets with past injuries, or have pets older than 6 years. Just like humans, most elderly pets experience some level of osteoarthritis, which simply means that the cartilage around the joints has worn down over time and the bones have started rubbing against each other. These symptoms can indicate a variety of problems, so take your pet to the vet as soon as you notice any of these signs. If you’ve adopted a puppy or kitten, you have the advantage of preventive care, which mainly includes keeping your pet healthy, maintaining an appropriate weight for their breed and keeping them active with the proper amounts of exercise and food, plus regular checkups with the vet. Talk to your vet about dietary supplements that can help maintain your pet’s joint health. If your pet is already showing signs of arthritis or hip dysplasia, your vet may prescribe anti-inflammatory drugs – or, in severe cases – surgery. Drugs can’t reverse or cure cartilage and bone loss, but they can relieve your pet’s pain, allowing your pet to stay active and lessen any further damage. Make sure you talk to your vet about all the approaches you are taking to help you pet. Finally, if your pet is suffering from joint pain, you might consider making your house as pain-free as possible. Introduce smaller “Pet steps” or ramps around your house that lead from one level to the next or in areas where your pet used to jump on to things. Be sure to supervise them as they climb any steps, and if the steps are still too steep, block off those areas entirely with a pet gate. Tuck warm water bottles or heating pads into your pet’s bedding for a bit of extra comfort. Groom your pet regularly, especially the areas that may be too hard for them to reach. Do you have an Annie? What are you doing to keep your pets’ joints healthy and pain free?

Pet Health Certificate

International Health Certificate for Personal Pets Many countries, including those of the European Union, have a health certificate that is specific to their country. There are countries that do not have an approved health certificate. If there is not a health certificate for the country you are visiting, then you should use the International Health Certificate USDA-APHIS 7001 form if you are traveling from the United States. It is officially known as United States Interstate and International Certificate of Health Examination for Small Animals. If your destination country does not have a health certificate and you are traveling from a country other than the United States or Canada, you can use our veterinary health certificate or inquire to your vet if they have one. Pet Health Certificate The international health certificate should be issued by your veterinarian as near to the date of travel as possible. Every country has limits as to when the certificate expires. The certificate should state that your pet is healthy and free of parasites. The certificate should show the vaccinations and treatments that your pet has been given including the type, the manufacturer, and the batch number if possible. No matter what country your pet is traveling to, you must enter that country before your pet’s most recent rabies vaccination has expired. Be sure to check the rules for the country you are traveling to as not all countries recognize the two and three year vaccine. If you are traveling to a country that does not recognize the three year vaccine, your pet may need to have a booster shot even though the two or three year vaccination has not expired. You need to consider the specific regulations for the country your pet is entering. Translation Some countries also require that the certificate should be translated into the language of that country. Traveling to the European Union You must use the new non-commercial or commercial EU health certificates depending on whether you or your designated representative are traveling with or within 5 days of your pet or your pet is traveling alone.
