Cushing’s Disease in Dogs: The Disease Your Vet is Likely to Miss

Cushing’s disease was originally diagnosed in a human in 1932 by Dr. Harvey Cushing. The middle layer of your pet’s adrenal gland, the zona fasciculata, can over produce glucocorticoids and create what is traditionally known as ‘typical’ Cushing’s disease. If your pet has taken prednisone, he is predisposed to acquire Cushing’s disease. Hands down, the most common form of Cushing’s disease in pets is the pituitary dependent form.

In my practice, most Cushing’s dogs get referred after a misdiagnosed liver disease. If your pet’s ALP value is elevated, ask your vet if this could be the start of Cushing’s disease. If your pet has symptoms of Cushing’s disease but you can’t afford the expensive tests required for a definitive diagnosis, you can ask your veterinarian to do a urine test called the urine cortisol to creatinine ratio test, or the UCC.The UCC must be run using the first urine of the morning. If your dog’s urine cortisol is within the normal range he most likely does not have typical Cushing’s disease. The CiALP is a simple and effective screening test to determine whether your pet is starting down the path toward Cushing’s disease.

Dogs don’t suddenly wake up and have Cushing’s disease. Dogs headed toward Cushing’s disease, but not yet completely Cushingoid are in the gray zone I consider your dog as having pre-Cushing’s syndrome when he exhibits symptoms of Cushing’s disease, but is still able to pass an ACTH stim test. Finding an integrative vet if your pet has Cushing’s symptoms is critical, as this can mean the difference between resolving the problem before it starts, or managing the disease in your pet for the remainder of his life.

FACT CHECK: Is PETA Stealing and Killing Pets?

CLAIM. PETA workers are stealing family pets and euthanizing them. RATING WHAT’S TRUE. PETA associates have been involved in some incidents involving the alleged theft and/or euthanization of family pets. WHAT’S FALSE.

PETA workers do not routinely lure pets away from families for the sole purpose of euthanizing the animals. Rumor circulating in the rescue world that PETA is rounding up healthy pets and killing them wholesale without trying to find homes for them. In at least two cases, PETA workers have been arrested in incidents involving the taking of companion animals that were not subsequently surrendered to shelters. WARNING: PETA may be in your neighborhood rounding up animals to kill. Shortly afterward, a PETA attorney called and informed the family that Maya was dead.

PETA had killed her. In the last 11 years, PETA has killed 29,426 animals. Harris, who was driving a PETA van, and co-worker Carrie Beth Edwards were accused of stealing the dog and charged with felony theft. In the last 12 years, PETA has killed 31,250 companion animals. It is a lie because rescue groups, individuals, and veterinarians have come forward stating that the animals they gave PETA were healthy and adoptable and PETA insiders have admitted as much, one former intern reporting that he quit in disgust after witnessing perfectly healthy puppies and kittens in the kill room.

Aside from those two incidents, we’ve found no evidence supporting the claim that PETA regularly takes household pets from their homes and euthanizes them.
