Healthy Pets Northwest – The natural alternative for Pet Food and Supplies

Portland is in the middle of construction season, and so it seems is Healthy Pets Northwest. This season we have been primarily working our Hawthorne and Multnomah Village stores, but have not forgotten Woodstock. Hawthorne Store Reset Customers coming into our Hawthorne store are noticing some big changes in the store’s layout and use of space. We have removed the old grocery store type of fixtures and replaced them with industrial pipe frames and wood shelves. Displays in the middle of the store have been updated to make them more functional and appealing.

We have changes coming so please stop in and check them out. Multnomah Village Updates At our Multnomah Village store the first new item most customers will see is sign above the front door. While it is new for us, we are glad to say that it is actually recycled from the Alberta store. Don’t be surprised if you show up one day and the store is a different color because we plan to have the building painted in August. Woodstock Deep Freeze Freezer space for raw foods and frozen treats is very tight at the Woodstock store.

To alleviate the crowding, we will be adding a three-door, glass-front freezer. It will give us a lot more space to meet the growing demand for raw pet foods.

Keeping Your Aging Pet Healthy

A senior dog or cat should have a physical examination by a veterinarian at least twice a year, and blood work at least annually. Increased sleeping is often a clue that the dog or cat is not feeling well. Metabolic diseases are often the cause of increased sleeping, as is cardiac disease. A dog who is refusing walks is most likely not feeling well, and there’s no reason his/her age should prevent us from trying to help. Everything from hormonal imbalances, to kidney disease, to inflammatory bowel disease, to cancer, can be associated with changes in food intake.

Related to food intake is the issue of water intake. Older dogs and cats don’t change their water intake just because they’re old-or bored. Kidney disease can be associated with increased water intake at the beginning, and decreased water intake later on. Increased water intake is associated with diabetes, hormone gland dysfunction and infections. Decreased water intake can be associated with heart disease, cancer and pain.

Retinal hemorrhage is associated with high blood pressure, as well as certain viral diseases. Regarding hearing in the older dog or cat, the cause is indeed most likely age-related.

About Pet Rats

Many health problems can be prevented by making sure to feed your rat the best diet possible, by providing optimum housing, plenty of exercise, mental enrichment, excellent veterinary care and lots of love. While I wish I could say rats are low maintenance and hardly ever have medical problems, I have not found that to be the case. The last six of my rats have all had medical problems that were completely atypical, causing my veterinarians to consult with experts in rat diseases and medical treatments. Many people aren’t prepared for how much it costs to take care of their pets. I used to work at the front desk in a veterinary hospital that saw exotic pets including rats.

I would guess I spend at least $500 per rat each year on exams, medicine and surgery when it’s needed.

67 N Reino Rd, Newbury Park, CA

498-7600 Part of the joys of being a new puppy parent is the countless hours spent staring at aisles of pet stores. Much like the Healthy Pet on T.O. Blvd, this Newbury Park version, is also well stocked, with kind staff and a good selection. Healthy pet is awesome! I just recently got a kitten and since I got my kitten, I’ve been going to Healthy pet for his food and whatever else he needs.

My kitten is like my kid and I want him to be taken care with the best I can possibly give him and healthy pet has been a big part of that. I have been going to Healthy Pet and the NP store for 5-6 years very faithfully, enough that the owner recognized me when I would go in for food every couple of months. I love to support the small businesses in town, but I’m afraid I’ve just started using Amazon and the local chain pet stores now because of lousy customer service and petty-ness about store policies. My latest customer service mishap had to do with the coupons Healthy Pet has out in the mailers and things. Healthy pet newbury park is a great pet store it means a lot to me to be here as it used to be Josh’s pet store where I’ve adopted 3 puppies and now I come to healthy PET’s store.

I Drive 30 miles to get here just to come by dog food I highly recommend this pet store. Great products! knowledgable staff! Great prices! Excellent healthy food selections!

Pet friendly! Yuck! The two bags of food we bought had tons of BUGS in them! Beware of this place! There are much much better pet stores in the NP & TO area!

I will drive the five miles to the big chain pet store over using this store that is less than a mile away.

Tulsa Exotic Pet Veterinarian

If you own an exotic pet in Tulsa such as birds, reptiles, ferrets, rabbits, hedgehogs and other pocket pets, it is good to know where to go when they become sick or injured. Establishing a good working relationship with a Tulsa veterinarian can be a challenge for any pet owner, but is a special challenge for the exotic pet owner. The exotic pet owner must find a vet who is willing to see their pet, knows something about their pet, and has the facilities, equipment and materials to treat their pet. Not all vets see exotics, and not all the ones who say they do have the know how. At All Creatures Veterinary Hospital in Tulsa, Oklahoma we have been taking care of exotic pets and have been accepting exotic pet referrals from other veterinarians for many years.

We have veterinarians and staff who have the experience and the training to take care of your special pet. We receive exotic pet clients from all over Northeast Oklahoma as well as Arkansas, Missouri and Kansas. Mark Setser, DVM provides care for all kinds of exotic pets. It is important that you bring your pet in for annual exams. It is very easy to not recognize symptoms of illness in your exotic pet when your pet exhibits them.

Often, exotic pets don’t get to the veterinarian in time and sometimes that can result in a very sad ending. We can give your pet a full exam, monitor your animal’s weight, detect slight onset of disease, give you nutritional, behavioral, and husbandry education, and develop a relationship with you and your exotic pet that may one day save its life.

American Veterinary Medical Foundation

The American Veterinary Medical Foundation is proud to be home to Partners for Healthy Pets, a profession-wide initiative comprised of animal health companies, non-profit organizations, state veterinary medical associations and colleges of veterinary medicine. Partners for Healthy Pets’ mission is to ensure that pets receive the preventive healthcare they deserve through regular visits to a veterinarian. While the percentage of preventable illnesses is on the rise in our beloved pets, the percentage of America’s 130 million cats and dogs who visit a veterinarian for a regular checkup is on the decline. Partners for Healthy Pets provides information and resources for veterinary healthcare teams to help promote preventive healthcare for all patients in their practices. The result is healthier patients and healthier practices!

A yearly checkup is the best way to keep your pet as healthy as possible – because it’s much easier to prevent disease than to treat it. Whether your dog frolics at the park with all the neighborhood pups, or the closest your cat gets to the great outdoors is a sunny windowsill, every pet needs to see their vet – at least once a year! Partners for Healthy Pets offers a website for pet owners that brings awareness to the importance of regular checkups for their pets and answers common pet owner questions about preventive healthcare. Partners for Healthy Pets is committed to a vision of improved overall health for pets. PHP provides tools that help communicate the value and benefit of preventive care, enhance the veterinary client relationship, and improve the overall quality of preventive healthcare provided for patients.

Simply click below to gain free access to the cutting edge tools that can give you and your practice team everything you need to make a profound and long lasting impact in your practice and on your pet loving community. From improving your staff’s communications skills to bringing back inactive clients, there’s a PHP tool that can benefit even the best of practices!

Pet Health Care Is Getting More Advanced and Expensive.

More health issues have emerged, including a bout with pneumonia and a hospital visit for gallbladder and liver problems. Altogether, she estimates she’s spent more than $30,000 on his medical care. Decades ago, medical facilities like the Animal Medical Center, which opened at its current location in 1962, were a rarity. Today, they’re sprinkled across the U.S. There’s the Chesapeake Veterinary Surgical Specialists in Annapolis, Maryland, the Angell Animal Medical Center in Boston, and the VCA West Los Angeles Animal Hospital, all of which offer a level of treatment comparable to human medicine.

For previous generations of owners, when a pet received a life-threatening diagnosis, the next step was painful, but preordained: Euthanasia. Today, when a pet is very sick, that’s when the decision-making starts. At the Animal Medical Center, the outcome can be very expensive. For humans medical costs there’s a solution, if an imperfect one: Health insurance, in which the bulk of medical expenses are passed on to insurers. As pet health care continues to track human health care, some owners have decided the same equation makes financial sense.

That’s the message Rusty Sproat, the founder and CEO of Figo Pet Insurance, a cloud-based pet health care insurance startup aimed at millennials, is pushing. As costs continues to increase – Americans spent a record $15.4 billion on vet services last year, up from $8.6 billion in 2005 – that will likely change, says Bob Vetere, president and CEO of the American Pet Product Association. Many owners now demand the same level of care for their pets as their families, says Dr. Chick Weisse, a staff surgeon and head of interventional radiology at the Animal Medical Center.

Balanced Diet For Dogs

Here are some tips on what dogs can eat and how to check whether your dog is eating a balanced diet. These dog food tips are very handy when it comes to dog care. It is a matter of pride to own healthy and strong dogs. Perfect health can be accomplished only with a balanced diet. For the pet, a number of thing needs to be consider, when it comes to feeding it.

Even if you feed your dog with the costliest dog foods, it might be deprived of the nutrients essential for its growth and development. On the other hand, eating too much can make the pet obese, which may ultimately need weight control. You need to provide your pet with a balanced diet that contains all the essential nutrients in it. In this article, we have discussed the food and balanced diet required for dogs.

Cat and Dog Bites

Severe bites may require additional medical attention. Examine your wound for nerve, tendon, or bone damage. Give you a tetanus shot if your last vaccine was more than 5 years ago. Most people who have cat and dog bites do not need a shot. The disease is uncommon in cats and dogs in the United States.

If you know the owner of the cat or dog that bit you, ask for their health records. If positive, you will need to get a series of rabies shots. You’ll get 2 shots right away and 3 more shots over a 14-day period. If the cat or dog that bit you is a stray, call animal control. If needed, report your bite incident to the proper authority.

If your wound gets worse or starts, call your doctor right away. There are many things you can do to help prevent cat and dog bites.

Dr. Becker: Are Vaccinations Necessary for Pets?

All About Parakeets, Family: Psittacidae at Animal World

Exotic parakeets have been enjoyed all over the world since ancient times. There are a huge number of parakeets in the wild, and many different types of parakeets have been kept as pets. A great experience with a budgie parakeet often leads to becoming a bird enthusiast, and a desire to explore other exotic parakeets from the Psittacidae. See different types of parakeets in Parakeet Families. Though all parakeets belong to the family the Psittacidae.

Exotic parakeets from Australia include: Budgerigar – also commonly called the Budgie Parakeet. Asian Parakeets: There are a number of parakeets from Asia. Parakeet Sizes: Parakeets are small to medium sized parrots. How Long Do Parakeets Live : Pet parakeets are known to live longer than parakeets in the wild. Bird Food: Foods available for Parakeets include formulated diets, either pelleted or extruded, seed mixes, and Parakeet mixes which offer a mixture of both pelleted food and seeds.

Being designed for long distance flying, parakeets need to fly! If you keep your parakeet in a cage, you should let it out to fly a couple of hours each day. Pairs of parakeet breeders should be housed separately from other parakeets as many species can become aggressive during breeding time.

Pet Care Assistance

To support medical care at Angell Animal Medical Center for sick or injured animals whose owners have limited financial resources. Excellent veterinary services are costly and many low-income pet owners need financial support to obtain needed care for their pets. At times when the animal-human relationship is jeopardized and there is truly both a medical and financial need, our financial assistance program lends support. To support the medical care of abused or neglected animals connected with our Law Enforcement efforts. When our Law Enforcement officers encounter situations from which they must remove animals who are being neglected or abused, the animals frequently require veterinary care, sometimes for extended periods of time.

Pet Care Assistance provides funding for medical care for these animals. To support the medical care of homeless animals in our adoption centers. Over 20,000 animals are brought to our Animal Care and Adoption Centers every year. They do not all come to us in healthy, adoptable condition. Pet Care Assistance allows our staff to give necessary medical treatment to hundreds of deserving animals, benefitting both the animals and their future owners.

While many patients and clients have benefited from PCA and we make every effort to maximize our funding of PCA, the fund is limited and clients must meet financial eligibility criteria in order to qualify. For information about temporary assistance for Equine animals, please see our Equine Assistance Program.

Pet Health Certificates

If you are considering traveling with your pet, whether it be within the United States or abroad, it is important to be aware of each state and country’s rules and regulations for importation or movement of pets. In the United States, the interstate movement of animals requires a pet health certificate. Many countries and airlines require an official health certificate performed by a USDA accredited veterinarian. You should contact your veterinarian directly to find out if he/she is accredited. The process of obtaining the necessary testing or examinations can take days to weeks, so you should plan well in advance to be sure all paperwork is complete prior to your travels. To find out more information about individual state and country regulations, airline requirements and fees please go the United States Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Services website by clicking here. Fresh to Frozen Pet Food

Healthy Paws was inspired by the principles of the “Biologically appropriate diet” created by the renowned veterinarian, Dr. Ian Billinghurst. He observed the health benefits for dogs and cats fed a diet of food in its natural state verses a diet of cooked or processed foods containing additives and supplements. At Healthy Paws, we continually refine this concept through collaboration with our consumers, retailers and trained pet nutritionists. We also offer a variety of simple minced proteins, bones, and natural dietary supplements. Healthy Paws is a family owned Canadian company that offers “Fresh-to-frozen” products that capture food’s nutrients in their richest state. We are dedicated to providing high quality nutrition through the use of human-grade ingredients that are preservative and additive free. We have developed a variety of raw food products to help your pet achieve a balanced diet from natural sources and we’ve made it easy to serve with our portion sizes and re-sealable packaging.

Pet Health Community: Support Group

Have used the same vet for 4 years and he has doneok; i took my old tibetan spaniel in for grooming. When i picked her up her right leg was up to her stomach. I have spinal stenois and on that particularday i was in great pain and said nothing. For three weeks i spent time finding a combination offoods she would eat and helped her walk. At firstshe was very weak, but little by little she walked aroundon her three legs by the 6th week she was using alllegs. I called the vet to find out what they had done and heplayed dumb. So i got my records sent to another vet; when i wentto pick up meds for the dogs; they refused servicebecause they were friends with the other vet. I got the paperwork and called several vets and finallysettled on one i had used many years prior. I told thatvet what happened; in case he didnt want to provideme with a script for my dogs meds. He didnt mindand was concerned that the original vet had refusedto deal with the matter. What can i do to see that this doesnt happen anymorewith this vet and their calling to prevent vets from helping me out.

Especially when let outside without supervision, pet animals who have not been spayed or neutered can multiply rapidly, causing a potential health problem if the babies end up roaming the neighborhood. Spaying or neutering your pet means you don’t need to worry about finding homes for kittens and puppies, and you help shelters by not adding to the number of animals they need to find homes for. The importantce of vaccinating your pet, even INDOOR PETS: Your pet can be exposed to rabies from certain types of wildlife outdoors, OR if an animal with rabies gets into your home and in contact with your pet. Bats can easily get into homes that are not batproofed. Because a small percentage of bats carry rabies, a bat exposure can result in a lengthy quarantine to an unvaccinated pet if the bat cannot be tested. Your pet can also be exposed to rabies through the bite or scratch of an animal, such as a skunk or raccoon, that is infected with rabies.
