Healthy Pets, Happy Owners: Health and Wellness Product Development in Pet Care

Owners are increasingly unwilling to compromise on the quality of food they feed their pets. In this context, the pet food market is increasingly coming to resemble the baby food market, particularly in North America. The types of protein used in dog and cat food are likely to become more diverse. Protein-rich alternatives to meat, such as insects and algae, are likely to slowly but steadily percolate into the mainstream market. The growth of internet retailing has made it easier for pet food start-ups to leapfrog bricks-and-mortar retailers and reach consumers directly, challenging the dominance of incumbents and accelerating the pace of innovation in health and wellness.

Lengthening life expectancy for dogs and cats and the increased prevalence of overweight and obese pets are major drivers of demand for health and wellness pet food and pet care products. With such gadgets as activity trackers and wearables going mainstream in the consumer electronics market, similar devices are becoming part of the day-to-day lives of a growing number of pets. Until fairly recently, it would take years for an innovation in the fmcg market to make the leap into pet food, but increasingly this transition can be measured in months. Many increasingly equate simplicity with naturalness, so shorter ingredient lists are becoming synonymous with quality in the minds of some consumers.

Dog Diseases & Health Issues

Dogs and cats suffer a wide range of health issues, from simple colds to more serious chronic conditions, such as heart disease. Veterinarians get millions of visits from ailing dogs and cats every year. While some dog diseases and disorders may be easily treated by the vet, many require ongoing treatment and care to ensure your pet’s ongoing health and wellbeing. We have created a full database of common dog ailments to help you better understand some of the many health issues that your cat or dog may experience. This ranges from more obvious issues, like lethargy and general wellness issues, to more subtle dog health issues, including Cushing’s disease, kennel cough, sleep issues, as well as glaucoma and other forms of visual impairment.

Separation anxiety is one of the most common forms of pet anxiety, causing your dog or cat to suffer from various stress and behavior issues when left alone in the home. Dogs and cats may also suffer from depression, grief, and other mood disorders common to humans. Understanding the most common signs and symptoms, causes, and treatment options for cancer in dogs and cats can make the experience a little bit easier. Epilepsy is a neurological disorder that causes recurring seizures in your dog or cat. Many dog owners are concerned about heart and circulatory problems, such as congestive heart failure, heartworm disease, and issues with blood vessels.

Joint issues in pets are common, leading to pain, discomfort, and general mobility problems. Lyme disease is spread by ticks and is another common infection among dogs.

Healthy Pet Natural Pet Care Market

Experienced and knowledgeable staff at Healthy Pet to better serve your focus on healthy options for your pet to increase the vitality and quality of life for all pets. The history of how Healthy Pet came to be is more a story of evolution. From humble beginnings as a pet supply store in Texas, to a move across the country to the Chicagoland region, animals have always been a part of the story. Eventually, the opportunity to open another pet supply store arose, and was met with much gusto. The products available were not enough to keep the store’s much beloved rottie, Pepper, thriving.

From Pepper, we learned our inspiration to do right by our pets, and although Pepper passed away in 2008, after 14 awesome years, her memory continues to inspire us to search for new ideas, new products to better serve our four legged community. After receiving her degree from UIUC, she returned as manager of Healthy Pet in 2004. Nicole loves working with people to create the healthiest and most engaging lives for our pets. Nicole’s dog, Gabi, a duck tolling retriever, is her inspiration. With the pet category growing as much as it is, Nicole looks at new products to bring in to better fulfill our pet’s lives.

She trains the staff to know the products, try them for themselves and their pets, and to recommend only what they believe in. Nicole highest priorities are the best selection, with the best pricing, with the best customer service.

Pets: Good for Your Health?

There’s no doubt that Americans love their pets. A new survey by the American Veterinary Medical Association shows that more than 57 percent of U.S. households own one or more animals. Sure, pets provide companionship and unconditional love. Many four-legged pets, especially dogs, can also get owners off the couch.

The AVMA survey found that nearly half of respondents considered their pets to be companions; only about 2 percent considered them to be property. Families with allergies can still get a pet if they can commit to allergy shots. Families may choose furless and featherless pets instead, like turtles, iguanas, fish and snakes. If you opt for a live animal, make sure to do plenty of research before you bring one home, and choose one whose personality, size and requirements fit your needs, abilities and living situation. Don’t think adding more pets will bring more health benefits.

Beck says that for many people one or two is plenty-more animals do not mean more health. Finally, as many benefits as pets bring, it’s important not to become too dependent on those animal companions, cautions psychologist Alan Entin, past president of the American Psychological Association’s division of family psychology. Though they make great companions, in the end pets are still no substitute for human friends and family.

Are Pets Good For You?

Owning a pet is linked to health and wellbeing, particularly for older people and patients recovering from major illness, say researchers in this week’s British Medical Journal. About half of households in the United Kingdom own pets and over 90% of pet owners regard their pet as a valued family member. Research has suggested that pet ownership is associated with a reduced risk of heart disease, lower use of family doctor services, and a reduced risk of asthma and allergies in young children. Although more recent studies have failed to support these findings, research has pointed to less absenteeism from school through sickness among children who live with pets. Explanations for the association between pet ownership and human health include social benefits and emotional support.

Studies have shown that support from pets may mirror some of the elements of human relationships known to contribute to health. Conflict between health and pet ownership can arise, say the authors. It is thought that up to 70% of pet owners would disregard advice to get rid of a pet because of allergies, while reports abound of older people avoiding medical care through fear of being admitted to hospital or residential care as this often means giving up a pet. People do not own pets specifically to enhance their health, rather they value the relationship and the contribution their pet makes to their quality of life. Greater understanding among health professionals is therefore needed to assure people that they do not need to choose between pet ownership and compliance with health advice, they conclude.

Greencross Vets Introduces Healthy Pets Plus

7 Health Benefits of Owning a Pet

According to the American Psychological Association, pet owners are just as close to their pets as they are to the most important people in their lives. In addition to companionship, pets can provide owners with numerous other health benefits, both psychological and physical. The following are some of the benefits of owning a pet. Veterans suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder, stressed out medical students, and anxious children are just a few groups that experience less stress in the presence of a pet. In 2012, researchers at Virginia Commonwealth University examined stress levels of employees who brought their dogs to work, employees who left their dogs at home, and employees who didn’t own a pet.

Employees reported a significant increase in stress on days they left their dog at home compared to when they brought their pet to work. Owning pets may also be associated with a lower risk of obesity, lower blood pressure, less stress, and lower cholesterol levels-all of which can have a positive impact on the heart. Researchers suspect growing up with pets strengthens the immune system and helps children build immunity against pet allergens and bacteria. According to a 2011 study published in Clinical & Experimental Allergy, children who grow up with a cat or dog in the home are less likely to be allergic to them later in life, but only if the pet was present when they were infants. A 2015 study published in the journal, PLoS One found that pet owners were more likely than non-pet owners to meet neighbors they had never met before, supporting previous research that suggests pets serve as ‘ice-breakers.

Interestingly, a 2011 study reported in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology found that pet owners shared many of these same characteristics. Compared to non-pet owners, researchers found pet owners to have higher self-esteem, be more extraverted and less lonely, be less preoccupied, and be less fearful of everyday life challenges.

Study Looks Into the Health Benefits of Pets

Anecdotes abound on the benefits of companion animals – whether service and therapy animals or family pets – on human health. Now the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, part of the National Institutes of Health, is embarking on an effort to study whether these animals can have a tangible effect on children’s well-being. The national institutes’ interest in this type of research goes back at least two decades. Other sessions confirmed the need for research, but most studies focused on negative interactions, like the ways pets could spread disease, said James A. Griffin, the institute’s deputy chief of child development and behavior.

Reviews of the Waltham research program indicated that larger studies over longer terms with appropriate control groups were needed. When Mars became aware of the institutes’ interest in this type of research, a public-private partnership was established, with the company committing more than $2 million. The National Institute of Nursing is also providing money. Peggy McCardle, chief of the institutes’ child development and behavior branch, said the money from Mars helped jump-start the efforts. People working with animals expect the research to back up their observations.

At Children’s Hospital of Orange County in Southern California dozens of volunteers regularly take their dogs to visit patients. Some patients who have refused to speak will talk to the dogs, she said, and others who have refused to move often reach for the dogs so they can pet them. So the animals become part of the therapeutic program, especially in the areas involving speech and movement.

Welcome to Mercola Healthy Pets!

16140 Boones Ferry Rd, Lake Oswego, OR

636-3186 Great local store with a really awesome selection of pet toys, food, supplies, etc. I’m a pretty hard-core pet owner, with high demands in terms of the quality of pet products. Healthy Pet has been my go-to store for years now. I work in the pet industry and the markup here on the majority of their items is pretty steep. I try to shop local whenever I can…been buying special cat food at the neighborhood store Healthy Pet for years.

I’ve been to Healthy Pet a couple times but lately I feel as if my times here are starting to become a let down. They had a great selection of dog products, which is a huge selling point for someone that spoils their pet as much as I do. I love going here, they always ask about my pets and want to know if they’re doing well. After trying another smaller pet store a few times and not being able to get the products I needed, i started a new search and found Healthy Pet. I have been a customer of this Healthy Pet in Lake Oswego for a few years now and I will have to say the customer service from everyone who works there is amazing.

I highly recommend coming here to do your pets shopping. I’ve been a customer of this local pet supply store for nearly five years.

Dealing With Triggers: Pets

If your child has an animal allergy, you’ll have to decide whether to keep your pet or find it a new home. In some cases, your doctor may say it’s OK to keep a pet if your child takes medicine or gets allergy shots. You’ll still need to limit your child’s exposure to the animal. Keep pets out of your child’s bedroom and playroom. Vacuum and dust regularly and avoid rugs and wall-to-wall carpeting, especially in your child’s bedroom.

Have someone other than your child wash or brush your pet every week. If you have a cat, keep your child away from the litter box, and place the box away from air vents. If you have a pet that lives in a cage, keep it in a room that your child doesn’t spend time in regularly. Let teachers know about your child’s allergies if there’s a caged animal in the classroom. Consider buying an air cleaner with a HEPA filter for your child’s bedroom or playroom.

If your child still has symptoms after taking medicines, including allergy shots, or needs a bunch of medicines to be around your pet, your only choice might be to find a new home for your pet. When going to a house with a pet, your child should first take any prescribed allergy medicine and bring along quick-relief medicine.

Mental Health Foundation

A pet can be a great source of comfort, companionship and motivation for their owners. In many ways, pets can help us to live mentally healthier lives. Just by stroking, sitting next to or playing with a pet can gives owning a chance to relax and calm their minds. Caring for a pet also gives your day purpose and reward, and a sense of achievement. Walking a dog often leads to conversations with other dog owners and this helps owners to stay socially connected and less withdrawn.

Pets can be especially valuable company for those in later life and living alone. People in later life experiencing typical life stresses can be comforted by a companion pet. Pets and children with ADHD. Children with ADHD can benefit from working with and keeping a pet. Taking charge of the jobs on a pet care schedule, such as feeding, walking and bathing, helps a child learn to plan and be responsible.

Pets need to play, and playing with a pet is an great way to release excess energy. A pet is a great listener, and offers unconditional love and will not criticize a child for having too much energy. We carried out a study with Cats Protection in 2011 which involved over 600 cat- and non-cat-owning respondents, with half of them describing themselves as currently having a mental health problem.

Therapeutic Influence of Pet Rabbits on Women’s Health

The trend of having rabbits as pets has been popular for quite a while now. Only recently have specialists managed to prove that those animals are not just pretty but also good for our health. Now, the relatively new technique of having cells with bunnies present during consultation sessions with psychologists and psychotherapy is becoming increasingly popular. The new study was conducted by a team of specialists from the University of Missouri and was led by Professor Rebecca Johnson. The results of the study show that even mere presence of bunnies gives women sense of calmness and tranquility.

The scientists observed decrease in the level of stress hormone cortisol in the women’s bodies after they petted those fluffy animals for a few minutes. Dr. Johnson notes that presence of a bunny in a household and the process of taking care of it facilitate social bonding, teach women and girls how to better understand themselves and others, and how to communicate with other people more effectively. In particular, women who had rabbits also had better control of their emotions and behavior. Bunnies used as part of therapy also facilitate healing of serious illnesses in children and adolescents, such as autism or depression, and help them cope with lack of confidence.

Pet Fish Health Problem, Issues| Goldfish, Aquarium Health Problems

Here are the symptoms of some of the common fish health problems that your aquarium fish may suffer. To make sure your fish remain healthy, keep on a lookout for these signs of illnesses and disease. A common problem among aquarium fish, the fin when clamped close to the body means something is not quite right. If you see your fish with a clamped fin, it is time to call in the doctor. The fish may be suffering from itch spots which are quite commonly found in aquarium fish.

Along with discolored spots, the fish may sometimes have red and white colored sores on their body. The fish may also accidentally scrape itself along sharp surfaces. If you see a fish gasping for air at the surface of water, it means that the fish is either unable to absorb oxygen from the water or there is a lack of oxygen in the water. You can find out what’s wrong by checking the other fish. If the other fish are not gasping, it means the oxygen level in the fish tank is normal and the problem lies with the fish.

A fish crashed at the bottom of the tank means that it is extremely tired and needs rest. A swim bladder disorder is one of the most common goldfish health problems which cause the fish to either float on the surface of the tank or sink to the bottom of it.

Pet Therapy, Healthy Reasons To Have A Pet, therapeutic use of Pets, Benefits of Pet Therapy, holisticonline.com

Here are the health reasons to have a pet as reported by Delta Society that performs research into the importance of animals to the lives and well being of humans. Researchers say those with a pet nearby during stressful encounters experienced half the increase in blood pressure as those who did not own a pet. The research team says it chose a dog or cat for each stockbroker at the beginning of the study and soon the study participants became very attached to their pets. Pet owners have lower triglyceride and cholesterol levels than non-owners. Companionship of pets helps children in families adjust better to the serious illness and death of a parent.

Pet owners feel less afraid of being a victim of crime when walking with a dog or sharing a residence with a dog. Contact with pets develops nurturing behavior in children who may grow to be more nurturing adults. Pet owners have a higher on-year survival rates following coronary heart disease. Pet owners have better physical health due to exercise with their pets. Positive self-esteem of children is enhanced by owning a pet.

Children’s cognitive development can be enhanced by owning a pet. Children owning pets are more involved in activities such as sports, hobbies, clubs or chores.

If you own a pet, there are steps you should take to keep your pets, yourself, and those around you healthy. Rain can wash pet waste from your lawn and the streets into rivers, bays, and beaches, causing illness. Salmonella may be found in the feces of some pets, especially those with diarrhea, and people can become infected if they do not wash their hands after contact with pets or pet feces. Hand washing can also help you avoid allergic reactions to pets. Vaccinate your pets against rabies, and take precautions if your pet is bitten or scratched by another animal.

More If your pet has a history of biting, consider obedience training and use a leash and/or muzzle when you take your pet outside. Protect your pets and yourself from tick-borne illnesses. Take steps to avoid ticks when walking or playing with pets outside. Do not let your pets swim or play in water experiencing an algae bloom. If someone in your home has asthma, keep pets out of bedrooms and outdoors as often as possible, bathe pets weekly, and clean pet bedding and litter every week.

Don’t spread lead. If you are doing painting, repair, or home improvement on a house built before 1978, keep pets out of the work area to avoid spreading lead dust or chips into other areas. Ask friends or relatives outside your area whether they could shelter your pets in an emergency, or contact hotels and motels to inquire about their pet policies.

4041 Attucks Dr, Powell, OH

Our dog came here when he was healthy as well and so we used their boarding services and vaccinations. Their service to our family in our dogs final hours was exceptional. I’ve also recently learned a friend had a similar issue with the same facility and Dr. Shoroosh in which her dog was improperly medicated, consequently magnifying her pets behavioral issues. Dr.

Lauren O’Conner is the most incredible human being/Veterinarian on the planet! I presently live in California and bring my dog back to Powell to see her. Long story short, my dog was hit by a car and they performed the surgery and did his rehab from the surgery as well. Jenny, The head of the rehabilitation side of things, is a fantastic person and you can tell she truly cares for all the dogs she works with. My dog had to have the same surgery performed a second time because of a freak occurrence and they did both the rehab and surgery free of charge.

He’s a fantastic diagnostician! I took my dog is with the symptoms of lethargy, lip color change and generally acting weird and within minutes he figured out what was wrong. My dog was boarded at Healthy Pets of Wedgewood over Easter weekend. Our dog is diabetic, so boarding her at the vet seemed like a good idea. Turns out my dog picked up a roundworm parasite at this facility.

HELL NO! I will never again take my dogs to any facility that lies to me and makes my pets sick.

PetSafe Healthy Pet Gravity Feeder & Waterer Set for Pets

PetSafe Healthy Pet Water Station, Large

After switching to this 2.5 gallon auto bowl I only have to refill it about once a day. Now that this baby is set up, I’m only refilling her water every day or two! What a victory! The stainless steel dish also makes it easy to clean out her globby slobber and the detritus that flops out of her floopy jowls. The only reason I didn’t give it five stars is because for some reason, both the cats and dogs, still prefer the good ol’e fashion big bowl of water.

The fact that you can carry it by the handle even with water in it is a huge plus to me and I don’t even mind refilling it often, which we have 4 pets that drink out of it. This waterer is perfect! We have three dogs ranging in size from a 110 lab to a corgi & the capacity of this waterer makes keeping them supplied with water so easy! Also, the stainless steel bowl is removable for easy cleaning and water container itself is made of very durable plastic! 100% satisfied. I have three dogs and kept filling up there bowls with water too often.

I opted to buy one of these pet water stations and it worked well with the medium size, but since two of my dogs are larger I ordered another medium water station and it’s perfect. It’s simple to change the water with minimal spillage if any at all. I bought this because my boy Felix was playing and knocked over his water bowl accidentally. Didn’t want him to not drink so I had to go back to his regular water bowl. Like these water stations so much, that I got a second one for the ‘dog room’.

I ordered the filters this time and they have worked flawlessly… so now I can fill them from the sink, instead of using filtered fridge water.

Healthy Pets Clinic

Our Healthy Pets Clinic offers the canine influenza vaccine. The initial dose is $25. The booster is an additional $25. If your pet is showing ANY respiratory signs, such as coughing or sneezing, please do not bring your pet to the clinic. The Kentucky Humane Society wants to ensure that every pet owner in our community has access to basic veterinary care for dogs and cats they can afford.

This is important not only to help keep owned pets healthy, but to ensure there are fewer sick animals in our community and in local shelters. KHS discovered the need for wellness examinations through our free Pet Help Line, 502-509-4PET. One of the most common reasons people call the Pet Help Line is because they are looking for affordable veterinary care. The Healthy Pets Clinic helps owners keep their beloved pets by providing affordable vaccinations and preventative care-with the goal of keeping pets healthy and out of shelters. The Healthy Pets Clinic offers affordable vaccines, basic preventatives, treatment of minor illnesses and diagnostics.

If a pet exhibits the need for additional care, the Healthy Pets Clinic staff will provide a list of veterinarians by zip code and will recommend they seek additional help for their pet. The Healthy Pets Clinic provides low-cost wellness examinations, vaccines and basic preventatives for owned animals. The clinic treats minor medical issues and provides diagnostics. The Kentucky Humane Society’s Healthy Pets Clinic is proud to offer low-cost animal care. For the long-term health and happiness of your pet, we recommend regular visits to a full-service veterinarian whenever possible.

The Health Benefits of Pets at WomansDay.com

On an emotional level, owning a pet can decrease depression, stress and anxiety; health-wise, it can lower your blood pressure, improve your immunity and even decrease your risk of heart attack and stroke. Read on to discover all of the incredible health benefits that can come with owning a pet. In a 2002 study at State University of New York at Buffalo, researchers found that when conducting a stressful task, people experienced less stress when their pets were with them than when a spouse, family member or close friend was nearby. Promises Treatment Centers, which specializes in addiction, not only recommends its patients consider getting a pet, but even allows pets in its rehabilitation facilities, according to David Sack, MD, CEO of Promises. According to the CDC, another heart-healthy result of owning a pet is lower cholesterol.

People who own pets-and men, in particular-have significantly lower cholesterol and triglyceride levels than those who don’t have pets. A lot of the health benefits of owning a pet may stem from the mental and emotional benefits. Pets can aid in the recovery of a heart attack. According to the American Diabetes Association’s Diabetes Forecast magazine, a 1992 study found that one-third of the pets living with diabetics would change their behavior when their owner’s blood sugar level dropped. Dr.

Becker says pets can dramatically improve immunity and prevent allergies. Children who grow up in a household with pets benefit in myriad ways, especially in their emotional development. Pets are also hugely beneficial to children suffering from autism and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.

Infections That Pets Carry

Caring for pets is a great learning experience for kids, teaching them responsibility, gentleness, and respect for other living beings. Animals and pets can spread infections to humans, especially kids. So if you’re thinking about buying a pet, or already have one, it’s important to know how to protect your family from infections. Pets also carry certain bacteria, viruses, parasites, and fungi that can cause illness if transmitted to humans. Pets can enrich your family life, and taking a few precautions can protect your kids from getting sick.

Protecting your family from pet-related infections begins before bringing a pet home. Campylobacter infection: can be spread by household pets carrying Campylobacter jejuni bacteria, which cause diarrhea, abdominal pain, and fever in people. Don’t forget to routinely vaccinate your pet on a schedule recommended by your vet – this will keep your pet healthy and reduce the risk that infections will spread to your kids. Avoid feeding your pet raw meat because this can be a source of infection, and do not allow your pet to drink toilet water because infections can be spread through saliva, urine, and feces. Limit young kids’ contact with outdoor pets that hunt and kill for food because a pet that ingests infected meat may get an infection that can be passed to people.

Don’t allow pets in areas where food is prepared or handled, and don’t bathe your pet or clean aquariums in the kitchen sink or bathtub. Small children are more likely to catch infections from pets because they crawl around on the floor with the animals, kiss them or share food with them, or put their fingers in the pets’ mouths and then put their dirty fingers in their own mouths.

The Royal Treatment: A Natural Approach to Wildly Healthy Pets: Barbara Royal Dr.: 9781451647709: Amazon.com: Books

When we brought animals out of their natural habitats and into our homes, we formed a partnership with them. Because we are grateful for what our pets offer us, we want to reliably provide what they need. We’d like to believe that our pets are at least as cheerful as they might be in the wild. While quantifying the contentedness of a wild animal is difficult, I assess the happiness of pets every day. They might wonder if the pet that travels the world with my client Oprah Winfrey is happier than the pet living in a city apartment with my client Sondra, who works as a night nurse.

Despite our busy schedules, the pace of a pet remains the same, and we must become part of that pace, if only for a brief part of our day. Pet owners understandably worry about myriad things: whether they provide too few or too many activities for their pets, whether they are feeding them the best food, if current vaccine schedules are safe, and if alternative treatments really work. In response to all of this, I urge pet owners to not overanalyze. Your pet lives in a safe, secure existence with a loving person. I have noticed clients in my practice becoming more confident about their pet care decisions.

They know that the Royal Treatment is not a plan that lavishes pets with unneeded pampering, but a sensible way to treat them. Giving your pet the Royal Treatment can ensure that he or she is not only happy but also wildly healthy.
