What to do if you’re allergic to your pet

For some, the psychological misery of giving up a pet may outweigh the everyday misery of allergy symptoms. If you’re allergic to dander, the easiest route to allergy relief is to find your pet a new home. If a family is unwilling to remove a pet, experts recommend a host of alternative measures, such as limiting contact between the pet and the allergic person and using air cleaners. Before you think about finding a pet a new home, it’s important to figure out if you – or your children – are in fact allergic. For some asthmatics, pets may actually be a relatively minor contribution to their symptoms, and some asthmatics may not be allergic to pets at all.

The easiest way to pinpoint a pet allergy is to visit an allergist and get a series of skin tests, in which the skin is exposed to small samples of the proteins shed by cat, dog, and other allergy-triggering substances, such as pollen or dust. Many people decide not to give away their pets even after an allergy is confirmed – though it depends on how severe their symptoms are and, often, whether children are allergic. If families aren’t willing to remove a pet, the next best thing is to isolate the pet from allergic family members as much as possible, by keeping it outdoors, or at least out of bedrooms. The impact of pet allergens on allergies and asthma isn’t entirely clear. Significantly, the same effect does not apply to children who already have pet allergies.

Studies have shown that pet allergies – especially cat allergies – can lead some children to develop asthma if they are exposed to pets, and can make asthma worse later in life. If you’re thinking about getting a pet and you suspect you might have allergies, Ceballos recommends getting tested before you bring your new pet home.

It’s National Puppy Day! Let’s Celebrate the Health Benefits of Pets

To celebrate the fluffiest holiday of the year, we’re here today to honor man’s best friend by recognizing the many health benefits of pets. There is overwhelming evidence that owning a dog can make you feel safer, less lonely, and happier overall. In addition to offering faithful companionship, fighting depression and reducing stress, dogs are known to increase laughter and delight by about 1,000 percent. In the neighborhood, the park, downtown, and even some workplaces, dogs are getting people to interact who otherwise might never have anything to do with one another. If you want to teach little Jimmy about responsibility, or embark on a long-term cooperative family effort, adopting a dog is a great place to start.

Dog owners tend to walk more and be more active in general, which, of course, is good for you and certainly one of the best health benefits of pets. People who live with dogs also tend to have stronger immunity and fewer allergic reactions. Perhaps most remarkable of all the health benefits of pets is the wide range of skills offered by service dogs. There are dogs that can offer mobility support and provide assistance for people with hearing or vision loss, and even dial an emergency help line for diabetics or those who have seizures. There are service dogs helping those with severe allergies and psychiatric issues, and specially trained pups that help people in wheelchairs with everyday tasks.

Most dog owners will agree with the abstract yet undeniable notion that pets are indeed good for the soul. If you’re not already a dog owner, this National Puppy Day is a great time to rescue a dog in need of a good home.

My 5yr old male boxer, Brutus, was diagnosed with Lymphoma at the end of this July. We are doing chemotherapy – adriamycin every three weeks, with our vet. I am struggling with all of the information out there about what is really best to feed a dog with lymphoma to give the best possible chance. My vet said he needed to be on high fat high protein low carb diet, and it was up to me if I wanted to feed him homemade or dog food. He did seem like he would like him to get back to normal pet food and recommended I go to a pet store and have them advise the best options for this diet, one of the brands that I could afford and looked promising was the Taste of the Wild.

Now I am concerned on giving him this food at all from things I am finding from my research or by what people are informing me. I had a conversation with Lew Olson in regards to feeding my dog Taste of the Wild along with BARF diet, where she explains that I shouldn’t feed him any commercial dog food only fresh low carb food. I am afraid to feed him the wrong thing that could interfere with his treatment and longevity,If anyone can give me expert advice or thoughts on this issue, it would be greatly appreciated.

Healthy Pet Clinics Fall 2014

The second Healthy Pet Clinic of the fall season was held at the St. Lucy’s Church gynasium on Sunday, October 19th and served more than 160 animals on a chilly autumn day. Pet owners often line up hours in advance of the scheduled opening. The Healthy Pet Clinic concept was conceived during meetings of that group of animal helping agencies. The commitment of volunteer veterinarians, technicians and animal lovers and community volunteers from across the Syracuse and Central New York area has made the clinics possible.

The Healthy Pet Clinics are administered exclusively by volunteers. They are funded by the cash donations made by the pet owners who patiently wait as long as two hours for their turn to get affordable care for their pets. Pet owners should arrive early as doors often open before noon. Pet owners need to bring documentation of financial need. Proof of address is required to show the pet owner lives in Syracuse.

Pet owners should ONLY bring animals in need of vaccinations and other care. Please do not bring your pet only for toe nail clippings or flea/tick product. Watch slideshow of images from September 2013 Healthy Pet Clinic.

Mental Health and Pets

Have you ever gone through a rough patch in your life or just had an off day and realised on reflection how much of a positive role your pet played in helping you feel better? A range of research shows that contact with animals can improve our wellbeing and state of mental health. On this week’s program we explore the strong connection pet owners have with their furry friends and look at ways to return the favour and maintain happy and healthy pets. Banfield State of Pet Health Report

These inhabit the intestinal tract of dogs and cats and are most common in puppies and kittens. These parasites live in the small intestines of dogs, cats, domestic animals and wildlife, attaching to the inside of the intestine using suckers, and are generally transmitted by fleas. As fleas bite to eat, they inject saliva under the skin. Fleas can also transmit tapeworms and spread other infectious diseases. Fleas are most prevalent through spring and summer, peaking in early fall. Fleas are present all year round in most parts of the USA. In colder areas, fleas will wait out the winter in your home. Signs of Fleas on Your Pet Red, irritated and broken skin around the neck, ears, belly or hindquarters. Flea dirt; tiny dark specks that look like dirt, but are really digested blood. If they turn the paper reddish brown, you have fleas. Consult your veterinarian to ensure the products you select are appropriate for your pet; some ingredients are not safe for cats. If you have both dogs and cats at home, consult with your veterinarian. Sudden death occurs rarely in dogs, but happens more commonly in cats. Cats have approximately double the prevalence of tapeworms compared to dogs. This may be partially due to cats ingesting fleas during grooming. Since tapeworms are transmitted by the ingestion of fleas, this indicates that more cats should receive year-round flea prevention to reduce exposure to fleas and subsequently reduce the risk of tapeworm infection.

Pet Health Information

The baking soda will deodorize as well as clean your dog. Dogs enjoy chewing on bones and burying them in the backyard, but dogs and their owners will not like what can happen after. Your canine’s teeth might seem impressive, but many dogs break or chip teeth while gnawing on bones. The real danger comes when dogs swallow the pieces of bones. Whether you eat ribs or just have a small wishbone, avoid feeding bones to your dog. There are often reports of pets being hurt, getting sick or sustaining injuries from purchased toys. Many situations involve products that are imported from other countries where rules about using various materials are more lax than in the U. S. After hearing such a report, many shoppers check labels and are more careful about what type of pet toys they buy. Make your own toys to be sure they are as safe as possible. You will know what goes into your homemade toys and how sturdily they are constructed, giving you peace of mind. If you want a noisemaker inside the toy, put some dried beans inside a small cardboard box. Roll up a hand towel and tie a knot in the middle to create a tug-of-war toy. After your dog eats the cooked marrow, he will have a long-lasting chew-bone. Tie the string on a cabinet handle for a toy the cat will reach up to play with. Put the lid on tightly, and let the cat roll the toy around on the floor. Add some colorful pieces of paper or craft feathers to add some color to the toy, if you wish.

Hey there! Thanks for visiting Healthy Paws™ – the Pet Care Experts! Who we are…. Whether you’re a pet owner, a pet care professional or just a lover of animals, Healthy Paws™ provides you with information, services, classes and products designed to assist you in creating a healthy lifestyle for your dog or cat…giving them a higher quality of life, and hence a greater quantity of life. That was the day I lost Diego – my pet, my friend and companion. I had always considered myself a very conscientious pet owner. I had always planned to take a pet first-aid & CPR course, but you know how it goes…life got in the way. The unthinkable day came when Diego died in my arms after a “Routine” teeth cleaning. Not one day goes by that I don’t think about Diego and regret not having taken a proactive stand by learning the techniques that may have saved his life. Would I have been able to save him had I known what steps to take? I don’t know. What I do know is that I would have felt confident that I had done everything I could have. I started Healthy Paws™ with the goal of helping pet owners, pet lovers, and pet care professionals prevent, prepare for, and respond to pet health emergencies. I never want another pet owner to experience the devastating feeling of helplessness. Through our focus on pet health, our offering of services has naturally evolved to include dog walking, pet sitting and other related pet services.

Pet Health Savings Accounts

While doing some research this weekend, I came across several companies that offer Pet Health Savings Accounts. It works somewhat like my own Health Savings Account my wife and I have with two exceptions. Secondly, it isn’t tied to a high deductible insurance policy. Some of these companies are positioning themselves to compete with pet insurance companies for pet owner’s dollars. I believe that a savings account and pet insurance should compliment each other, not compete against each other. The idea behind my HSA is that with my savings I can pay for minor medical issues, medications, etc. The insurance policy will cover catastrophic medical issues. If I have a major health issue that I can’t cover out-of-pocket, then my insurance will cover that. I try to put the maximum that is allowed into the savings account every year, and since my deductible is high, most years my insurance never comes into play. For those people who advise starting a savings account, but not buying pet insurance leave the pet owner exposed to not being able to cover a major medical expense should it occur before their savings account builds up. Theoretically, as your savings build up, you can afford to raise your deductible and lower your insurance premium. This is what I’ve done over the years with my own health insurance. Pet owners should have a savings account, credit card, and pet insurance. Since pet insurance is indemnity insurance, the pet owner usually pays the veterinarian and then receives reimbursement from the insurance company within a couple of weeks after filing the claim. Having a credit card allows the pet owner to pay the veterinarian and then usually receive reimbursement before the credit card bill becomes due.

Rogz Pet Insurance

We know that pets are individuals and so we are introducing a new way of calculating your premium. The premium is calculated according to the risks associated with the insured Pet and is printed on the relevant Certificate of Insurance. In calculating the premium, we may consider the cover that you have chosen, where you and your pet permanently live as well as the species, breed, age and sex of your pet. What happens if an insured pet is given away or changes owners? The original owner will have to notify Rogz Pet Insurance of the change of ownership. The original owner will then be required to cancel their Pet’s cover on their policy and the new owner will send through an application form re-joining the pet under their name with new banking details. The new owner will receive a New Policy covering the Pet. The one calendar month waiting period will not apply unless there is a lapse in the monthly premium payment between Change of Ownership. A physical or bodily injury that happens accidentally to your pet as a result of external, violent and visible means. An Illness means an unexpected sickness or disease or any change to your pet’s normal healthy state, which is not caused by injury to your pet. Puppies and kittens are more likely to develop an illness or injury than an adult pet. We suggest insuring as soon as possible to avoid unexpected surprises that may result in a pre-existing exclusion on your policy, preventing your pet from getting full cover. Just because your pet isn’t a puppy or kitten doesn’t mean you can’t or shouldn’t get pet insurance. As pets age they get sicker and have more and higher vet bills than when they were young. As soon as your pet is 8 weeks of age they can be covered by Rogz Pet Insurance.

Health Risks of Having a Pet

Dogs and cats that spend time in wooded areas may pick up tiny ticks. Some ticks carry Lyme disease, which can be hard to detect and diagnose, causing long-term problems, such as irregular heartbeat, arthritis, and impaired brain function. “Always check animals after time in the woods,” says Swanson. Do a full-body inspection on your kids and yourself, too. Remove ticks from animals and humans in the same way: Disinfect the bite area with rubbing alcohol and pull the tick straight up and off with tweezers. That way, if your child or pet becomes ill over the next few weeks, you’ll have the tick for testing. When removing ticks from pets, it’s helpful to have a second person to help prevent the animal from twisting or jerking.

Agriculture Victoria

Victoria has one of the highest rates of pet ownership in the world. Owning pets can be a lot of fun, and pets can provide us with company, stress relief and unconditional love. Pet ownership also teaches children responsibility and helps them develop their social and nurturing skills. Cats and dogs can live for over 10 years, so it’s important that we understand the responsibilities we have for our pets over their entire life span. Responsible pet ownership involves choosing the right pet for your lifestyle, complying with the law, caring for your pet’s health and ensuring your pet doesn’t cause problems in the community. Being a responsible owner ensures you and your pet can enjoy a long and happy relationship.

Merck Animal Health

If your pet is displaying any of these common signs, he or she may have diabetes. If you didn’t know your dog or cat could develop diabetes, you’re not alone. Many owners don’t realize diabetes can affect pets too, so learning that your dog or cat has the condition can leave you with many questions. While there’s no cure for diabetes, proper care can help your pet live a happy, healthy, active life. The more you know about diabetes, the better you’ll be able to work with your veterinarian to successfully manage your pet’s health. Your veterinarian is an essential partner in your pet’s diabetes care. Only your veterinarian can diagnose diabetes and provide appropriate preventive and management programs.
