Healthy Pet in Lake Oswego, OR 97035

Astounded at several negative reviews! – I moved to Lake Oswego a year and a half ago from the Portland West Hills. I had shopped with Western Pet Supply for years and still do occasionally when over there. This little store in Lake Oswego has bent over backwards to order kibble and biscuits they normally don’t carry for my Great Dane. I was astounded to read that a few people thought the staff was rude. I have never been treated anything but kindly when I go in.

This little store does know their foods …and I don’t expect more than that. This is all and more I expect from a pet supply retailer.

Health Risks of Having a Pet

Dogs and cats that spend time in wooded areas may pick up tiny ticks. Some ticks carry Lyme disease, which can be hard to detect and diagnose, causing long-term problems, such as irregular heartbeat, arthritis, and impaired brain function. “Always check animals after time in the woods,” says Swanson. Do a full-body inspection on your kids and yourself, too. Remove ticks from animals and humans in the same way: Disinfect the bite area with rubbing alcohol and pull the tick straight up and off with tweezers. That way, if your child or pet becomes ill over the next few weeks, you’ll have the tick for testing. When removing ticks from pets, it’s helpful to have a second person to help prevent the animal from twisting or jerking.

Agriculture Victoria

Victoria has one of the highest rates of pet ownership in the world. Owning pets can be a lot of fun, and pets can provide us with company, stress relief and unconditional love. Pet ownership also teaches children responsibility and helps them develop their social and nurturing skills. Cats and dogs can live for over 10 years, so it’s important that we understand the responsibilities we have for our pets over their entire life span. Responsible pet ownership involves choosing the right pet for your lifestyle, complying with the law, caring for your pet’s health and ensuring your pet doesn’t cause problems in the community. Being a responsible owner ensures you and your pet can enjoy a long and happy relationship.

To Have or Not To Have a Pet for Better Health?

An intervention study measured the impact of adverse life events and established that those having a pet coped significantly better than those not having one. Elderly pet owners without immediate medical attention coped with stressful life events better when they had a pet. A telephone interview associated pet ownership with better physical and mental health, fewer visits to a physician, and fewer medications involving problems of blood pressure, sleep, cholesterol, or a heart problem -. Pet ownership was connected with better self-reported physical and psychological health and with fewer visits to see a physician when the most important demographic variables were controlled. A10-month intervention study that also involved some volunteers living with a pet indicated that physical and mental health of the pet owners improved and that they moved about more. Pet owners were recorded to have higher diastolic blood pressures or otherwise poorer health than those without pets. With the exception of asthma/allergic rhinitis, there were more disease indicators among pet owners than among those not having pets. Pet owners smoked cigarettes more often but consumed alcohol less often than those not having pets. Pets seem to be part of the lives of older people who have settled down and experience an increase in the number of illnesses, whereas young healthy single people have no time, need, or possibility for a pet. One would-be mechanism between pet ownership and health has been that pet owners may have more vigorous exercise than others , , ,. The report of the American Heart Attack Survey – indicated that within a year following a coronary event, a less obvious risk of mortality was evident among pet owners than among those not having a pet. Pet owners had a slightly higher BMI than the rest, which indicates that people having a pet could use some exercise. Investigation of effects generated by pet ownership is at the good but early beginning, and it is now important to establish studies with representative population based databases in order to test hypotheses involving effects of pet ownership and various health related dimensions within population groups that are composed of different kinds of background characteristics. Harlos Pets, Vets and Boarding Tips

If this is your first puppy, you may not be aware of the importance of puppy socialization. What does this term mean? Just as with children, socialization is an important component of making sure your new puppy develops a well-informed perspective of the world and society around him. The result of a good program of socialization is a more relaxed, safe and happy pet that lasts a lifetime. Here we take a look at how you can give your puppy socialization that stands both him, and your household in good stead. Start Puppy Socialization Early in Life. You should begin his socialization process at an early age, if possible. He’s able to begin accepting new experiences as early as 3 weeks of age. Let’s say you bring your new puppy home at 8 weeks. If you live in a suburban or urban community, he’s bound to run into experiences of loud buses rolling by, children playing in the neighborhood, people on bikes, crowded streets brimming with a variety of people, honking cars – oh, and let’s not forget cats and the mail delivery person! Many other such social situations are mirrored in rural areas. As your puppy socialization program progresses, he’ll naturally tend to accept the everyday events, people and animals he encounters as familiar, non-threatening experiences that lead to a well-adjusted, happy, relaxed and socialized pet. At the same time, he’ll still retain a healthy amount of suspicion towards unfamiliar situations, such as a prowler around the home – a good characteristic in a dog. There is one caveat you should bear in mind when implementing your puppy socialization project: until your pup has received all of his vaccinations, there is a risk that he might pick up some diseases or parasites in certain public venues, such as public parks. Safe socialization activities include taking him for rides in the car through your neighborhood, where he can view kids playing, cycling, or to the local fast food drive-up windows. Other possibilities are play sessions with neighbor’s dogs and puppy classes which are conducted in an indoor area, which is kept clean and free of disease dangers. Don’t discount the seemingly mundane, at-home experiences, such as running the vacuum cleaner, hair dryer, or TV. Kids playing loud music? Remember, everything is new to your puppy! The earlier you start your puppy socialization program, the more well-adjusted and relaxed your new pet will be in the long run.

Pet ownership and human health: a brief review of evidence and issues

Accepted 4 November 2005.Research into the association between pet ownership and human health has produced intriguing, although frequently contradictory, results often raising uncertainty as to whether pet ownership is advisable on health grounds. Introduction The question of whether someone should own a pet is never as simple as whether that pet has a measurably beneficial or detrimental effect on the owner’s physical health. Death of a pet can cause grief similar to that in human bereavement, whereas threat of loss of a pet may be met with blunt refusal and non-compliance with advice on health. We examine the current evidence for a link between pet ownership and human health and discuss the importance of understanding the role of pets in people’s lives. Is pet ownership associated with human health? Research dating from the 1980s popularised the view that pet ownership could have positive benefits on human health. 6 No studies have found significant social or economic differences between people who do or do not have pets that would adequately explain differences in health outcome, leading to the belief that pet ownership itself is the primary cause of the reported benefits. A review of the association between pets and allergic sensitisation found inconsistent results for cat ownership between studies of similar design, whereas dog ownership seemed to have no effect or even protected against specific sensitisation to dog allergens and allergic sensitisation in general. Do we need a broader definition of health? The main issue may not be whether pet ownership per se confers measurable physical benefits but the role that pets have in individual people’s lives-namely, the contributions of the pet to quality of life or the costs to wellbeing through a pet’s death. Three potential mechanisms have been proposed to explain the association between pet ownership and benefits to human health. So far evidence is lacking that any of these cofactors account for both health promoting attributes and propensity to own pets, suggesting that health benefits, when reported, may be attributable to some aspect of pet ownership. The third proposal focuses on ways in which pet ownership may exert a direct effect on human health and wellbeing through the nature of the relationship. Figure 2 illustrates the inter-relationship between functions served by pet ownership and human health outcomes. Why pet ownership should be taken seriously The question of whether a person should acquire a pet or continue to own a pet requires careful consideration of the balance between benefits and potential problems. Some sources estimate that up to 70% of pet owners would disregard advice to get rid of a pet owing to allergies,w5 whereas reports abound of older people avoiding medical care through fear of being admitted to hospital or residential care as this often means giving up a pet. People do not own pets specifically to enhance their health, rather they value the relationship and the contribution their pet makes to their quality of life.20 Greater understanding among health professionals is needed to assure people that they do not need to choose between pet ownership and compliance with health advice.

Feeding Your Cat: Know the Basics of Feline Nutrition

This web page lays out some often-ignored principles of feline nutrition and explains why cats have a better chance at optimal health if they are fed canned food instead of dry kibble. An increasing number of nutrition-savvy veterinarians, including board-certified veterinary internists, are now strongly recommending the feeding of canned food instead of dry kibble. Most people who are concerned about their own nutrition have heard nutritionists say “Shop the perimeter of the grocery store.” This statement refers to the push to get humans to focus on fresh food – not overly processed food found in boxes and cans. Opie’s pictorial at Feline Urinary Tract Diseases is a ‘must see’ for any cat caregiver who insists on feeding dry food. A cat consuming a predominantly dry food diet does drink more water than a cat consuming a canned food diet, but in the end, when water from all sources is added together, the cat on dry food consumes approximately half the amount of water compared with a cat eating canned food. We do not know all of the causes of this complex disease but what we do know is that many diabetic cats cease needing insulin or have their insulin needs significantly decrease once their dietary carbohydrate level is decreased to a more species-appropriate level than that found in many commercial foods. Many veterinarians prescribe expensive diets such as Purina DM and Hill’s m/d but you can do much better for your cat by feeding other more nutritious – and lower carbohydrate – canned foods. For optimal dental health, a cat should not be eating either canned or dry food since neither food type promotes a healthy oral cavity but we have to work with what is practical in a typical home setting and feeding a cat a ‘whole carcass prey’ diet is not terribly practical – even if it would be great for their teeth. Feline Asthma/Allergic Airway Disease: Many cats have had their respiratory symptoms subside considerably, or disappear completely, once they were placed on a grain-free canned food diet, or a meat-based homemade diet. At the very least, dry food should be kept in the refrigerator but it is better to just refrain from feeding this type of food completely. The two most frequent comments that I hear from people when trying to convince them to feed their cats a healthier diet are “My cat won’t eat canned food” and “But my cat really likes his dry food.” Children really like potato chips and ice cream but that certainly does not mean those food items constitute optimal nutrition. These cats will take to it with the attitude of “Finally – an appropriate diet for my species.” In this case, if your cat has been on all dry food, or only receives canned food as an occasional ‘treat’, start by feeding canned food in increasing amounts. Once your cat is on a schedule of meal-feeding instead of free-feeding, try feeding a meal of canned food only. You can worry about feeding a a different canned food later if you want to and you can always mix different types of food together. After two weeks of feeding her via the tube she started licking the canned food from my fingers then suddenly decided it was time to eat it.
