Healthy Pets – Healthy Teeth

Healthy pets, healthy people: How to avoid the diseases that pets can spread to people

Toxoplasmosis can be transmitted to humans by: Note that many infections do not come from pets, eg, undercooked meatsIf you are healthy, the symptoms may be fever, feeling generally unwell or swollen lymph nodes. Pet birds and wild birds can carry and spread psittacosis. Never live trap wild mice and do not keep them as pets. Rabies passes to humans through the bite of an infected wild animal or house pet. In Canada, house pets almost never have rabies, but bites from animals acting strangely, stray animals or those that live outside must be investigated.

Pets that carry salmonella usually don’t get sick from it, but people do. People get it from direct contact with their pets, or from cages, living areas or bird feeders contaminated by salmonella. Wash your hands well with soap and water after handling pets and pet chews. Keep reptile pets away from young children and babies. Exotic pets, such as sugar gliders and hedgehogs, turtles and other reptiles should not be kept as pets in homes with young children.

Whooping cough is caused by a germ with the same name, but people do not get whooping cough from pets. People, particularly children, are at risk of getting infected if they do not properly wash their hands after contact with their pet.

Healthy Pets Northwest – The natural alternative for Pet Food and Supplies

Portland is in the middle of construction season, and so it seems is Healthy Pets Northwest. This season we have been primarily working our Hawthorne and Multnomah Village stores, but have not forgotten Woodstock. Hawthorne Store Reset Customers coming into our Hawthorne store are noticing some big changes in the store’s layout and use of space. We have removed the old grocery store type of fixtures and replaced them with industrial pipe frames and wood shelves. Displays in the middle of the store have been updated to make them more functional and appealing.

We have changes coming so please stop in and check them out. Multnomah Village Updates At our Multnomah Village store the first new item most customers will see is sign above the front door. While it is new for us, we are glad to say that it is actually recycled from the Alberta store. Don’t be surprised if you show up one day and the store is a different color because we plan to have the building painted in August. Woodstock Deep Freeze Freezer space for raw foods and frozen treats is very tight at the Woodstock store.

To alleviate the crowding, we will be adding a three-door, glass-front freezer. It will give us a lot more space to meet the growing demand for raw pet foods.

Animals play an important role in many people’s lives and often help with therapy, rehab, etc. Learn more about the possible benefits of pet companionship.

This article summarizes what is known and not known about how animals help improve the health and well-being of people, and what the implications might be for helping people who don’t have pets of their own. Some research studies have found that people who have a pet have healthier hearts, stay home sick less often, make fewer visits to the doctor, get more exercise, and are less depressed. The social support provided by a pet might also encourage more social interactions with people, reducing feelings of isolation or loneliness. Researchers found that people who said they had a pet in both 1996 and 2001 had the fewest doctor visits, followed by people who had acquired a pet by 2001; the group of people who did not have a pet at either time had the highest number of doctor visits. More research is needed on the connection between allergies, asthma, and pets, but it is possible that the impact of having pets on allergies may depend on the age of the person at the time they are exposed to an animal as well as the type of pet.

Some people are more attached to their pets than others and those feelings could influence the impact of the pet on the person’s health. Most evidence on the benefits of having a pet comes from surveys of current health, but that means it is impossible to know if a person is in good health because she has a pet or if he is more likely to get a pet because he is in good health. The German study described above suggests that having a pet for a longer period of time is more beneficial to your health; but it is also possible that people with pets have less time to spare to go to the doctor or are less concerned about their own health, especially minor ailments. People who love their pets are likely to want to let researchers know that their pets help improve their lives. How much time the person spends with his or her pet could be strongly influenced by the type of pet and in turn could influence the health benefits of having a pet.

Researchers have also used animals to temporarily provide companionship to children with health or mental health problems, or elderly people who may not have the energy or resources for a live-in pet. People who have pets know that there are many benefits to having a companion animal, but we do not yet know under what circumstances those benefits are most likely.

Dog health

If the dog suffers from any of these, a Vet should be consulted immediately and steps should be taken towards the treatment of the dog. Most of these diseases are spread directly from dog to dog, while others require a vector such as a tick or mosquito. Bacterial diseases in dogs are usually not contagious from dog to dog; instead they are usually the result of wound colonization, opportunistic infections secondary to decreased resistance, or secondary to other conditions. These examples are not considered infectious diseases because they do not satisfy Koch’s postulates – for example Staphylococcus intermedius, a commonly isolated bacteria from skin infections in dogs, would not cause pyoderma when introduced to a healthy dog. There are some bacteria that are contagious from dog to dog.

It has been diagnosed in dogs in all 48 states of the continental U.S. Ehrlichia canis, which causes canine ehrlichiosis, and Rickettsia rickettsii, which causes Rocky Mountain spotted fever, are both spread by the American dog tick, Dermacentor variabilis, and the brown dog tick, Rhipicephalus sanguineous. Although dogs do not seem to be as susceptible to such diseases as humans, similar rickettsial diseases have been spread by dogs to humans through such mechanisms as a dog killing an infected rabbit, then shaking itself off in the house near enough to its owners to fatally infect most of the family. Treatment of an infected dog is difficult, involving an attempt to poison the healthy worm with arsenic compounds without killing the weakened dog, and frequently does not succeed. Although dog treats carry high benefits for dogs’ teeth, they can also be a source of problems when given excessively.

Dog treats are more likely to be linked to obesity in old dogs, since in their old age they are less likely to be active and exercising. While some think that vitamins and supplements are necessary and can improve the health of a dog, others believe that they are unnecessary and may harm the dog. It is not essential for a female dog to either experience a heat cycle or have puppies before spaying, and likewise, a male dog does not need the experience of mating before neutering.

Pet vaccination

Such as the kennel cough vaccine, still need to be done annually, but researchers now believe there are good reasons why core vaccines should be triennial. An association between injection of adjuvanted vaccines against both the leukaemia virus and rabies and the development of injection-site sarcomas in cats was soon confirmed. In 2007, the World Small Animal Veterinary Association began advising vets to continue vaccinating pets with core vaccines, but to reduce their frequency to minimise the potential for adverse reactions. In Australia, the AVA issued a revised policy in June 2009 stating that in most cases core vaccines need not be administered any more frequently than triennially, or even less so under certain circumstances, such as if your pet is kept inside and less likely to come into contact with these viruses. Vaccine labelling – the Australian regulator, the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority, can’t change vaccine labels to the new three-year recommendation without data being provided by the manufacturer to prove a longer duration of immunity.

Vets aren’t obliged to follow recommendations on vaccine labels – state and territory legislation allows vets to use vaccines at whatever interval they determine is best, provided they obtain informed consent from the pet owner. Discuss with your vet the most suitable vaccination regime for your pet. To reduce the risk of tumours, feline adjuvanted vaccines should not be injected into your cat’s back. Core vaccines are those that should be administered to every puppy or kitten, and should be used in adult animals in a manner that maintains robust protection for life. Non-core vaccines are those that don’t need to be administered to every animal.

This could be because the disease(s) they protect against are relatively mild, the animal has little chance of exposure to the disease, the vaccine causes adverse effects, making the risk-benefit ratio unattractive, or there is insufficient scientific information to allow an informed decision about the need, efficacy and/or safety of the vaccine. If non-core vaccines are required, they may need to be administered annually.

2018 Pet Insurance Reviews: Find the Best Pet Insurance

Pet insurance pays up to 90% of vet bills, so you can give your pet the best possible medical care without worrying about cost. Pet parent forums and Yelp pet insurance reviews praise Embrace for generous wellness care that covers routine vet visits, flea prevention, and even dental cleanings! You won’t find this with other pet insurance companies. We ranked Pets Best 3rd in our pet insurance reviews because of limitations on coverage. We’re often asked about coverage for senior pets from pet parents who read our pet insurance reviews.

Nationwide pet insurance, formerly VPI pet insurance, has the worst reputation in the pet insurance industry. Pet Insurance U’s team of veterinarians offers updated, unbiased, and thorough reviews of the most popular pet insurance plans. Our pet insurance reviews tell you exactly which plans cover or exclude hereditary and congenital conditions. All over the internet, there are hundreds of pet insurance reviews from customers thanking insurance for saving their dog or cat’s life. Pet insurance has saved pet owners thousands of dollars in veterinary costs.

Pet insurance reimburses up to 90% of vet bills, so your pet can receive the care they need to live a longer, healthier life. Trupanion CEO Darryl Rawlings noted about 1 in 10 pet insurance policyholders file a claim every month, with some pet owners being reimbursed 500 to 700 percent more than they’ll end up paying in premiums over the lifetime of their pets. A more strategic way to master the basics of pet insurance is to decide on the type and level of coverage you want for your pet.

Top 15 Reviews and Complaints about HealthyPets.com

I asked for a tracking number and she took my email address at that time so she could send it. After trying to ask how to get this quickly because I am now out of product and heading to a competition in 2 days the girl told me that they don’t offer Friday overnight services. I spoke to him and he told me they had sent an email on 6/27 telling me product was on backorder. I asked how they could have sent an email when I was just told they did not have my email address and he then read me my address and stated again they had sent an email. I asked how could I get this product quicker because my horse needs it and we are headed to competition.

Needless to say, I was livid and he finally said he could not help me and told me to call back Monday or he would have the other supervisor call me Monday. Bottom line, If I had been contacted I would have GLADLY paid the extra shipping to get the product here in time. Facts: I looked through my emails and do not see where I received an email on 6/27 stating item was on backorder. On HealthyPets website under shipping options it states that if an item for overnight service is not shipped they will phone customer. So my horse is probably not going to perform his best now at the upcoming show where I am going to be out a lot of money in entry fees, etc.

If you need something for your horse order elsewhere. Some equine companies are staffed by people who actually own and compete horses and realize what people invest in time, effort and money to keep a horse performing i.e. what it means to keep your horse on meds.

Pet Therapy: Science Proves Owning a Pet Is Good for You

Pets are incredibly well loved: according to a 2015 Harris poll, 95% of owners think of their animal as a member of the family. People who have pets tend to have lower blood pressure, heart rate and heart-disease risk than those who don’t. Scientists are now digging up evidence that animals can also help improve mental health, even for people with challenging disorders. The rise of animal therapy is backed by increasingly serious science showing that social support-a proven antidote to anxiety and loneliness-can come on four legs, not just two. Animals of many types can help calm stress, fear and anxiety in young children, the elderly and everyone in between.

More research is needed before scientists know exactly why it works and how much animal interaction is needed for the best results. In one study, a stressed-out group of adults were told to pet a rabbit, a turtle or their toy forms. It worked for people regardless of whether they initially said they liked animals. In a 2016 study published in the journal Gerontology, elderly people who were given five crickets in a cage became less depressed after eight weeks than a control group. Among the most-studied therapy animals, horses have been involved in medical treatment plans in Europe since the 1860s.

Animals make socializing easier for kids who find it stressful, says Maggie O’Haire of Purdue. In her study, when children with autism had a guinea pig in the classroom, they were more social with their peers, smiled and laughed more, and showed fewer signs of stress.

Pet ownership and human health: a brief review of evidence and issues

Accepted 4 November 2005.Research into the association between pet ownership and human health has produced intriguing, although frequently contradictory, results often raising uncertainty as to whether pet ownership is advisable on health grounds. Death of a pet can cause grief similar to that in human bereavement, whereas threat of loss of a pet may be met with blunt refusal and non-compliance with advice on health. We examine the current evidence for a link between pet ownership and human health and discuss the importance of understanding the role of pets in people’s lives. Three potential mechanisms have been proposed to explain the association between pet ownership and benefits to human health. 13 The first is that there is no real association between the two, rather that cofactors such as personality traits, age, and economic or health status impact on the decision to own a pet and thus produce an apparent link between pets and health. So far evidence is lacking that any of these cofactors account for both health promoting attributes and propensity to own pets, suggesting that health benefits, when reported, may be attributable to some aspect of pet ownership.

The third proposal focuses on ways in which pet ownership may exert a direct effect on human health and wellbeing through the nature of the relationship. Figure 2 illustrates the inter-relationship between functions served by pet ownership and human health outcomes. Why pet ownership should be taken seriously The question of whether a person should acquire a pet or continue to own a pet requires careful consideration of the balance between benefits and potential problems. Conflict between health interests and pet ownership can cause non-compliance with advice on health. Some sources estimate that up to 70% of pet owners would disregard advice to get rid of a pet owing to allergies,w5 whereas reports abound of older people avoiding medical care through fear of being admitted to hospital or residential care as this often means giving up a pet.

People do not own pets specifically to enhance their health, rather they value the relationship and the contribution their pet makes to their quality of life.20 Greater understanding among health professionals is needed to assure people that they do not need to choose between pet ownership and compliance with health advice.

Because of extensive media coverage, it is now widely believed that pets enhance their owners’ health, sense of psychological well-being, and longevity. While some researchers have reported that positive effects accrue from interacting with animals, others have found that the health and happiness of pet owners is no better, and in some cases worse, than that of non-pet owners. Google Scholar, SAGE Journals, ISI Allen, K., Shykoff, B.E., Izzo, J.L. Pet ownership, but not ACE inhibitor therapy, blunts home blood pressure responses to mental stress. Google Scholar, Medline, ISI Becker, M.

The Quality of Pet Food Ingredients (Part 1 of 2)

Healthy Pets Digestive Enzymes

To be frank, today’s commercial pet foods lack healthy natural enzymes. In essence, the food is dead, over-processed and in-organic. Production of both canned food and dried kibble require very high temperatures, which destroy any live enzymes present in the food. Enzymes are needed to help unlock these food nutrients and aid in digestion. This can lead to unwanted consequences for your pet.

Unlike so many animal supplements available today, the ingredients used in my Healthy Pets Digestive Enzymes are human grade – meaning, they’re not any different than those you or I would take. Imagine the peace of mind you’ll enjoy knowing you’re safeguarding your pet’s delicate enzyme stores and helping to promote the best health possible. Help your pet get started on the road to good health.

How Pets Improve Your Health

In a study published in Clinical & Experimental Allergy, children who were exposed to pets before they were six months old were less likely to develop allergic diseases, hay fever, and eczema as they got older. “In the first year of life, babies who are exposed to dogs in the household are more likely not to have allergies, asthma, and fewer upper respiratory infections,” says Johnson. “If exposed at an early age to dander and allergens, we may be less reactive to them over time.” And kids who grow up around farm animals, dogs, or cats typically have stronger immune systems and a reduced risk of developing asthma or eczema.

Healthy Hemp Pet Company

We wanted a natural option to support our pets’ joint function, flexibility and mobility. To help them stay calm in stressful situations such as thunderstorms and fireworks. Development, testing and trial, we offer health products for pets made of natural ingredients infused with phytocannabinoid-rich hemp oil to help our companion animals be more comfortable with an active lifestyle for longer. Hemp oil may help with occasional stiffness and ease of movement. It may also reduce the negative effects of stress and help animals cope with situations such as fire works, crowds, separation, travel, motion sickness and tension.
