Sometimes we are able to take comfort in companionship of our to pets when human relationships fail us. Losing that unconditional love and affection can be heartbreaking. Remembering your pet in an online memorial is a wonderful way to honor that bond. We create a pet memorial page in your special pet’s name when you donate to the AHF. How Pets Improve Your Health

In a study published in Clinical & Experimental Allergy, children who were exposed to pets before they were six months old were less likely to develop allergic diseases, hay fever, and eczema as they got older. “In the first year of life, babies who are exposed to dogs in the household are more likely not to have allergies, asthma, and fewer upper respiratory infections,” says Johnson. “If exposed at an early age to dander and allergens, we may be less reactive to them over time.” And kids who grow up around farm animals, dogs, or cats typically have stronger immune systems and a reduced risk of developing asthma or eczema.

Best Pet Insurance for 2018

How Pet Insurance Can Save You Money If you asked every pet lover you encountered in a day how they feel about their pets, theyd likely tell you they view them as family members, not pets. Most pet owners want their furry family members to live long and healthy lives. One of the best ways to make sure that happens is by investing in a pet insurance policy. Pet insurance plans are designed to help shoulder the burden of these costs, helping pet owners to have the choice in caring for their pet, versus euthanasia due to insufficient funding to pay for necessary medical procedures. Industry trends indicate that pet health insurance policies are growing in popularity in the U.S., with an anticipated increase of up to 10 percent within the next five years. The first official pet healthcare policy was sold in Britain in 1947. Britain trails only Sweden in the number of pet owners who provide insurance for their pets. While it is sold under the name healthcare insurance, pet health insurance is actually under the insurance umbrella for property. According to insurance laws, pets are seen as property, so the insurance policy which covers them is similar to that for any other property owned by an individual. Most pet owners understand that cost for care, as well as the likelihood that the pet will suffer from certain diseases and conditions, significantly increases as the pet ages. Not many pet owners have stopped to ask themselves what they would do if their pet suffered a serious or unexpected injury. Many pet owners cannot afford such high up-front costs and most veterinarians require payment in full at the time of the procedure. That leaves many pet owners struggling with what to do for their pet when they cant afford the procedure that could help them. Most pet policies cover these issues and many more, making them a good investment for pet owners. With a variety of plans from which to choose, pet owners can find one that is not only affordable to them, but which also covers their pets annual medical needs.

Healthy Pets Program

Wellness services are now offered 5 days a week at 241 Steedly Drive, and are no longer offered at the S.N.I.P. Clinic, which focuses on spay/neuter only. Our clinic is very busy so please note that you may have a two or more hour wait on busy days and times. Our Healthy Pets Clinic offers the canine influenza vaccine. The initial dose is $25. The booster is an additional $25. If your pet is showing ANY respiratory signs, such as coughing or sneezing, please do not bring your pet to the clinic. The Healthy Pets Clinic provides low-cost wellness examinations, vaccines and basic preventatives for owned animals. The clinic treats minor medical issues and provides diagnostics. The Kentucky Humane Society’s Healthy Pets Clinic is proud to offer low-cost animal care. Our clinic is not a replacement for a relationship with a full-service veterinarian. For the long-term health and happiness of your pet, we recommend regular visits to a full-service veterinarian whenever possible. The Kentucky Humane Society wants to ensure that every pet owner in our community has access to basic veterinary care for dogs and cats they can afford. This is important not only to help keep owned pets healthy, but to ensure there are fewer sick animals in our community and in local shelters. KHS discovered the need for wellness examinations through our free Pet Help Line, 502-509-4PET. One of the most common reasons people call the Pet Help Line is because they are looking for affordable veterinary care. The Healthy Pets Clinic helps owners keep their beloved pets by providing affordable vaccinations and preventative care-with the goal of keeping pets healthy and out of shelters. The Healthy Pets Clinic offers affordable vaccines, basic preventatives, treatment of minor illnesses and diagnostics. If a pet exhibits the need for additional care, the Healthy Pets Clinic staff will provide a list of veterinarians by zip code and will recommend they seek additional help for their pet.

VOHC authorizes the use of the VOHC Registered Seal on products intended to help retard plaque and tartar on the teeth of animals. Products designed to be chewed by animals may occasionally cause intestinal problems or injury if not appropriate for the animal, if not used as intended by the manufacturer, or as the result of some other cause. VOHC is not liable to any person for any loss or injury of any type that occurs from the use of a product sold under its Registered Seal. When VOHC authorizes use of its Registered Seal, VOHC makes no certification, representation or warranty as to safety and certifies only that, upon application for the right to use the Registered Seal, the product met VOHC’s Standards for effectiveness in retarding plaque and tartar when used as directed. VOHC makes no other certification, and no representation or warranty of any sort, in connection with any product sold under its Registered Seal. Submission of results of clinical trials to VOHC on behalf of a product is voluntary. If the data submitted demonstrate the required dental efficacy, the VOHC Seal of Acceptance is awarded to the product. As part of the submission, VOHC requires assurance by the company that a product awarded the VOHC Seal is safe and meets all applicable regulatory requirements, and requires the company to inform VOHC of any problems with the product following issuance of the VOHC Seal. VOHC will take action if FDA or other appropriate regulatory authority finds fault with a class of products or a specific product that is included in the VOHC Accepted list. VOHC recommends that all of the products on its VOHC Accepted list are used as recommended by the manufacturer and that treat products are given when the pet can be observed by the owner. Almost all dogs and cats enjoy the chewing action and taste of palatable treats, and typically spend a few minutes chewing the product rather than bolting it down whole or in large pieces. If your pet does not chew the product thoroughly, discontinue use of the treat.

Nontoxic Ways to Protect Your Pet

So what’s a responsible pet lover to do? The key is to stop the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency from allowing these harmful products to reach store shelves in the first place. Pets can also suffer: Skin irritation, neurological problems, gastrointestinal disorders, and even organ failure have been reported as a result of pet poisonings. “Many vets count on the EPA to make sure that the products on the market are safe if used correctly.” Unfortunately, the ingredients in these products are still quite dangerous, and regular use can result in unsafe exposure, particularly for children and pregnant women. Kids can still be exposed to them from their furry siblings’ flea collars or other products. Diatomaceous earth is a less toxic option for the home and yard, says Rotkin-Ellman, “But it can be really damaging if it is inhaled or gets into your or your pet’s eyes.” Use caution and protective gear, and use it only in areas where pets and kids won’t be exposed. Look for products marketed to control pests, and avoid the kind used in swimming-pool systems. Be wary of products marketed as “Natural.” Sadly, there’s no magic nontoxic bullet to wipe out these pests. If you give these a try, monitor your pet and family closely for adverse reactions. There are varying degrees of danger when it comes to these products and the chemicals they contain. Oral meds need to be prescribed by a vet and are considerably more expensive, so they may not be a realistic option for all pet owners. If chemical products are necessary for additional flea or tick control, NRDC recommends s-methoprene or pyriproxyfen, which are less toxic ingredients-but read the labels carefully because some products use them with other, more harmful pesticides. These products can contain some of the most dangerous insecticides, including tetrachlorvinphos, carbaryl, and propoxur. Most products designed to repel these buggers include possible carcinogens and nervous-system toxins like fipronil, permethrin, pyrethrins, or imidacloprid. Two common ingredients in flea-and-tick products, permethrin and pyrethrins, are very toxic to cats. If you or your pet reacts to a pet product containing pesticides, call your local poison control center, talk to your doctor, and, later, report it to the National Pesticide Information Center at 800-858-7378.

Pet Flora, Probiotic Supplements for Cats

Vitality Science Pet Flora is the most effective probiotic for cats on the market because they are soil based! It is a broad spectrum formula, a matrix of superior, highly-resilient microflora whose organic, seed-like structures survive the early GI tract to thrive in the intestines. Pet Flora supports normal gastrointestinal function in animals. This is why our feline probiotic Pet Flora is superior to dairy-based probiotics for cats- it’s natural to your pet. Pet Flora holds down yeasts, fungi, and pathogenic microorganisms, while improving nutrient assimilation. “Nikki has improved greatly since taking your recommended Pet Flora and Super Pet Enzymes supplements. We feed her Wellness grain-free dry food along with Nature’s Variety Instinct canned food, which she absolutely loves! Her stools are regular and she has vomited only a couple times. Nikki is a happy girl once again, and her coat is so soft since using the coconut oil.” Thank you so very much for your dedication to pet health, from pet owners like myself who have become so frustrated and saddened with the treatment choices for our little pets’ chronic conditions. Texas A&M Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences

Pet medical histories are beginning to resemble that of their owners. With the rising costs and variety of pet procedures being offered, pet insurance policies are becoming more logical than ever, and opting for these policies can be beneficial. “Pet insurance policies, like all insurance, allow you to plan for the event of a major medical condition,” states Dr. Dan Posey, a clinical associate professor at the Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences. “There is no doubt that veterinarians and pet owners have had to make tough health care decisions sometime in their pet’s life and with pet insurance it makes these decisions easier.” Before opting for health insurance for your pet it is critical that you research what each company’s plans cover and what is the best policy for you. There are numerous pet health insurance companies to choose from and the internet is a great place to start your research. Most pet insurance companies offer a variety of plans. “There are differences between each company’s policies and one should thoroughly understand what the insurance will and will not cover,” states Posey. Pet insurance is similar to our own health insurance in the fact that most companies usually will not cover pre-existing conditions. Hereditary conditions are also commonly excluded from pet health insurance. “A person should look for a pet insurance that does not have ‘per incident’ limits,” recommends Dr. M.A. Crist, a veterinarian at Texas A&M University. “If your animal has an accident and requires extensive surgery, a person with pet health insurance usually opts for the surgery, thinking it will be covered by their policy,” notes Crist. “Only later they find out that their insurance may not cover all of the expenses of the procedure or will only pay up to a certain amount for that surgery, leaving the policy holder to pay the remaining amount.” It is important to completely understand your policy, know the procedures it will cover, and what percentage your insurance company will pay for each. “The diagnostic, medical, and surgical procedures that were once only available in regional referral centers are now becoming more available in private practices. With increased access to such procedures, pet insurance can help make medical care more affordable.”

PET bottles potential health hazard News in Science

Water bottles made from PET plastic leach compounds that mimic the hormone oestrogen raising questions about their safety, say German researchers. Previous research has focused on plastics containing the chemical bisphenol-a. During that time regular PET plastic water bottles have maintained a reputation as safe, at least as far as human health is concerned. Scientists at Goethe University in Frankfurt found that estrogenic compounds leach from the plastic into the water. It’s too soon to say whether drinking out of PET plastic bottles is harmful to human health, says lead researcher Martin Wagner. It now appears possible that some as-yet unidentified chemicals in these plastics have the potential to interfere with estrogen and other reproductive hormones, just as BPA and phthalates do. “If you drink water from plastic bottles, you have a high probability of drinking estrogenic compounds.” The study adds to growing concerns about products that span the plastic spectrum, says Shanna Swan, an epidemiologist at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry in New York. “This is coming at a good time because the use of bottles for consuming water is getting very bad press now because of its carbon footprint,” she says. Nine samples came out of glass bottles, nine were bottled in PET plastic and two were in cardboard, juice-like boxes. The specialised yeast, which change colour in the presence of estrogen-like compounds, revealed estrogenic activity in seven of the nine plastic bottles, compared with just three of the nine glass ones. To see if the estrogenic compounds were actually coming from the water itself, Wagner emptied the bottles and replaced the water with a pure snail medium and a tiny species of snail that is especially sensitive to estrogenic compounds. Eight weeks later, female snails living in plastic bottles had more than twice as many embryos inside their bodies compared to the glass-grown snails. “Something from the plastic,” says Wagner, “Must have leached out and changed the reproductive patterns of our snails.” Until the compounds at work in the snail study have been identified, it’s not possible to know if PET plastics pose a human health risk. “Now, I’m not saying that anymore. We don’t know about 4, 5, 1, or 2. This raises questions about all plastic bottles.”

Pets: Good for Your Health?

There’s no doubt that Americans love their pets. Can having pets actually provide health benefits? Yes, say experts, as long as you’re not allergic to animals or terrified of them. “Pet ownership is good for your health both physically and psychologically,” says Connecticut psychologist Herbert Nieburg, author of “Pet Loss: A Thoughtful Guide for Adults and Children”. Sure, pets provide companionship and unconditional love. “Any disease condition that has a stress-related component to it, we believe pets could ameliorate stress and moderate the situation,” says biologist Erika Friedmann, a professor at the University of Maryland School of Nursing. Many four-legged pets, especially dogs, can also get owners off the couch. “They’re there to greet you when you come home at the end of the day, and they’re ready for some play and attention,” says veterinarian Scott Line, associate editor of the “Merck/Merial Manual for Pet Health.” “They need to exercise, so it propels people out the door.” These walks also force pet owners to socialize instead of sitting around feeling sorry for themselves, which can help improve their mood. The AVMA survey found that nearly half of respondents considered their pets to be companions; only about 2 percent considered them to be property. “The human-animal bond is becoming increasingly strong in our society,” says veterinarian and veterinary surgeon Kimberly May of the AVMA. In fact, Alan Beck, director of the Center for Human-Animal Bond at Purdue University, found in a study that 97 percent of people talk to their pets. Families with allergies can still get a pet if they can commit to allergy shots. Families may choose furless and featherless pets instead, like turtles, iguanas, fish and snakes. Another option for kids with allergies who want a pet? Bring home a stuffed animal instead. A study in the January issue of the AAP journal Pediatrics found that a “Huggy-Puppy” doll actually eased the stress and improved outcomes for 2-to-7-year-old children in Israel who were exposed to violence during the Israeli-Lebanon war in 2006. Don’t think adding more pets will bring more health benefits. Finally, as many benefits as pets bring, it’s important not to become too dependent on those animal companions, cautions psychologist Alan Entin, past president of the American Psychological Association’s division of family psychology. Though they make great companions, in the end pets are still no substitute for human friends and family.

Healthy Dog & Cat Food

Thus our natural dog food, cat food, and other pet products are developed by in-house pet health doctorate professionals and produced in our own manufacturing facilities. Wysong develops state of the art, nutraceutically enhanced healthy dog food, natural cat food, ferret food, horse supplements and pet supplements with a view to long term prevention and staving off the long-latency diseases pets often fall victim to. Wysong also offers a variety of gourmet raw cat and dog food, as well as health supplements designed to help your pet live a healthy life. Our healthy dog and cat food products have helped thousands of pet owners provide the healthy food their dogs, cats or other pets need. Dry Dog Food Wysong dry dog foods are designed to mimic the archetypal canine diet, and are uniquely formulated and manufactured to meet – as closely as possible – the carnivorous genetic requirements of dogs. Canned Dog Food Much like with dry dog foods in general, canned dog food quality varies significantly, and may contain unhealthful ingredients that are more conducive to profit than health. Wysong canned dog foods can be fed as a standalone meal, or as an adjunct to Wysong dry and raw dog foods. Raw Dog Food For many decades Wysong has promoted the importance of raw dog food. The fact of the matter is, while dry and canned dog foods can emulate the natural canine diet, no food can quite match that genetic expectation like a properly designed raw dog food. We pathogen test all raw dog foods prior to release to ensure that your dog receives all of the nutritional benefits of raw dog food at negligible risk. Canned Cat Food Canned cat foods provide an opportunity for nutritional superiority as compared to other pet food forms, and Wysong’s canned cat food line incorporates all of those nutritional advantages. Our canned cat food line is rounded out with Uretic with Organic Chicken™, which is the canned counterpart to our successful Uretic™ dry cat food. Raw Cat Food Domestic cat caretakers must face one unarguable truth when it comes to the nutritional requirements of their cat: in the wild cats subsist only on raw prey and carrion. A responsible, healthful feeding regimen for a domestic cat must incorporate raw cat food. Wysong raw cat foods are healthful, nutritious, safe, and most definitely palatable! Wysong True Non-Thermal™ processing keeps processing temperatures below 118° Fahrenheit, which is the temperature at which important food components like probiotics and enzymes are deactivated.

Market Health, the leading health and beauty affiliate program just released a new exciting Pet Health Affiliate Programs section to it’s list of offers. Only Flexpet contains CM8! Thanks to the wonders of CM8, animals suffering with joint diseases such as arthritis, bursitis, osteochondrosis, hip dysplasia and other degenerative problems with the shoulders, elbows and stifle joint can experience long-term relief without drugs. The time to get started on marketing natural pet health products is now! Consumer concern over pet food safety, stemming from the spring 2007 pet food recalls, combined with an already-high consumer interest in natural and organic products, will propel the market for natural pet products from US$ 1.3 billion in 2007 to US$ 2.5 billion in 2012, according to a new report from Packaged Facts, reports MarketingCharts. The Natural, Organic and Eco-Friendly Pet Products in the US report finds that tracked sales of natural pet food through supermarkets, drugstores, and mass merchandisers surged in 2006, rising more than 200 percent to reach $29 million. Sales simply exploded during the first two quarters of 2007, nearly tripling to $82 million, according to the data. Packaged Facts forecasts that full-year 2007 tracked sales of natural pet food will reach approximately $180 million – more than a 500 percent increase over 2006 sales. The surge in natural sales isn’t limited to pet food alone: Accounting for approximately one-fifth of 2007 sales, natural pet-care products registered a 19 percent CAGR from 2003 to 2007, according to the report. Natural pet-care products are forecast to grow at a 10 percent CAGR from 2007 to 2012, reaching $458 million, according to the forecast. Nearly half of the dog- or cat-owning households in the US seek out natural or eco-friendly products – for a total population of 25.1 million pet-owning households, according to Simmons Market Research Bureau. The largest segments of natural pet-product consumers include non-Hispanic Whites, homeowners and women, along with households without children. The segments with the highest propensity to seek out natural, organic, and eco-friendly products include the following:o Asians. “Renters and condo/co-op owners also show a disproportionately high tendency to seek out natural products, in keeping with a market skew toward the top 25 metro areas and with the greater availability of eco-friendly retailers and products in these leading metro areas,” according to the report. “The impact of the pet food recall may be felt for years to come, as consumers make product safety a top concern and marketers respond by placing appeals like product safety, reliability, and quality at the forefront,” said Don Montuori, VP of Publishing at Packaged Facts. “Although pet specialty outlets are still the primary venue for natural and organic products, these products are rapidly infiltrating mass-market outlets, where growing demand represents big opportunities for natural and organic marketers.”

Make your Pet a Healthy Broth – Truth about Pet Food

Cook them into a tasty, healthy broth for your pet! OkGrandma used the bone broth as soup stock for people food, but I’m making bone broth for my pets. While some professional chefs consider a broth to be made from simmering meat and a stock to be made from simmering bones, I’m considering our preparation a broth. When you toss some bones into a pan of water, preparing to make broth, what you get is far more than what you see. Your broth will eventually contain ingredients that are in the bone. While detailed and at points highly scientific, I think you’ll see the health potential of cooking bone broth for your pet. Broth will contain the ingredients that are in bone. Covering and adhering to the ends of bones to form a joint, is cartilage. Therefore broth will also contain the ingredients that are in cartilage. Bone and cartilage are both classified as connective tissue. Connective tissue is one of the four basic tissue types that exist in animals. It functions to bind or hold together and to support and strengthen the body. Since the cells are few, it is the valuable nutrients from the matrixes of bone and cartilage, which create the substance called broth.” “One fourth of all the protein in the body is collagen. It is the framework for the extra cellular matrix of bone, cartilage and skin. Another word for collagen is gelatin. Collagen is a scientific term for a particular protein in the body, while gelatin is a food term referring to extracted collagen.” “Minerals have three major functions in the body. First, they provide a structural base for connective tissue like bone. Second, they create electrical potentials allowing for conduction of nerve signals and movement across cell membranes. Third, they act as catalysts for enzymes in physiologic processes, and as Paul Bergner says in The Healing Power of Minerals,”transform the food and air we breathe into energy, vibrant health, and consciousness. “It is reasonable to assume that previous to the development of pharmaceutical mineral supplements, bone broth was an important supply of minerals, especially in the winter when fresh fruit and vegetables are less available, and warm food is preferred. Amazing huh! Simply put, cooking a bone broth removes “the active chemical ingredients into the water by means of heat, time, and acid, making the nutrients immediately available to absorb. Ready to cook? Here’s your recipeIngredients: Bones from poultry, fish, beef, lamb. Cover the bones with cold water; or 2 cups of water per 1 pound of bones. Bring to a low boil, reduce heat and let simmer for 6 to 48 hours for chicken bones; 12 to 72 hours for beef bones. Feed your pet the broth at non-meal times at least 30 minutes prior to a meal or 1 hour after. It is not recommended to add the broth to a commercial pet food – home cooked or home prepared raw food is fine.
