Mercola Healthy Pets 21st Anniversary: Dogs of the World

Especially when let outside without supervision, pet animals who have not been spayed or neutered can multiply rapidly, causing a potential health problem if the babies end up roaming the neighborhood. Spaying or neutering your pet means you don’t need to worry about finding homes for kittens and puppies, and you help shelters by not adding to the number of animals they need to find homes for. The importantce of vaccinating your pet, even INDOOR PETS: Your pet can be exposed to rabies from certain types of wildlife outdoors, OR if an animal with rabies gets into your home and in contact with your pet. Bats can easily get into homes that are not batproofed. Because a small percentage of bats carry rabies, a bat exposure can result in a lengthy quarantine to an unvaccinated pet if the bat cannot be tested.

Your pet can also be exposed to rabies through the bite or scratch of an animal, such as a skunk or raccoon, that is infected with rabies. Technical Information about rabies is available from the Compendium of Animal Rabies Prevention and Control.

We’re going to tell you about our favorite pet store, Healthy Pet in Lake Oswego. LINUS: We love Healthy Pet because every time our humans go there, they buy… us toys and treats. LINUS: One of my favorites is this brightly colored toy mouse. LINUS: Yeah!

I like the tuna pouches better than any of the canned foods we’ve had because the tuna is nice and juicy. I think they’re Zuke’s Purrz or something. JASPER: And we eat this stuff called Pure Vita chicken and peas from Natural Balance. LINUS: And it doesn’t give you an upset tummy, so that’s a plus. JASPER: Yeah, the other foods we tried made me kinda gassy.

JASPER: Anyway…. LINUS: We’re using this new litter now called Naturally Fresh from Blue Buffalo. LINUS: It’s better than clay because it doesn’t get stuck to the bottom of the pan. I think it’s going to last a lot longer too because it scoops better. We think everyone should go to Healthy Pet and buy lots of toys and treats for your pets.

Pet Import/Export

These animals require a current rabies vaccination if three months of age or older and a small animal health certificate issued within 30 days of import. Persons with animals coming from a rabies quarantine area are required to contact the State Veterinarian office in Anchorage at 375-8215 for issuance of a permit number. Animals that are over 12 weeks of age and cannot be vaccinated for rabies due to a medical condition must have an Exemption From Rabies Vaccination Form signed by the examining veterinarian, signed by the owner, and approved by the State of Alaska prior to entry. Other U.S. States: Individuals need to contact the state of destination to obtain import requirements.

Alaska Ferry: A health certificate or permit is not required when transporting animals between ports within Alaska. When leaving Alaska, persons transporting animals are responsible for complying with the regulations of the state or country to which they are traveling. For information regarding Washington animal importation requirements, visit the website for the Washington State Department of Agriculture or call at 360-902-1800. Canada: Dogs and cats that are accompanied by their owners and are over three months require a rabies vaccination certificate. Contact the Canadian Food Inspection Agency with any questions.

Only a current rabies certificate is required for dog and cat round-trip movement from Alaska to Canada that is not longer than one month. It is important to have the actual rabies certificate as proof of vaccination, not just a rabies tag. For travel by road through Canada, passengers might also wish to check with Canada Border Services Agency for related information.

Pet Flora, Probiotic Supplements for Dogs

I have never written a testimonial for a product before, but I have had tremendous success with Pet Flora and want to share my experiences with other pet owners. I think it is an amazing product for maintaining healthy digestion, and for the prevention and treatment for gas, diarrhea and vomiting in animals. I have 2 cats and 2 dogs My dogs both have great noses and love food. That can get them into some trouble! Whenever they find something they shouldn’t have eaten; whether they get into my trash can, eat another dog’s food, or steal some people food, they will get bad gas, diarrhea or they’ll vomit.

I used to take my dogs to the vet for treatment for vomiting and diarrhea, and I would incur sizable vet bills. Now I can treat them at home with Pet Flora and save myself a lot of time and money To give my dogs the supplement, I’ll put some peanut butter on the pill, or wrap it in cheese, and my dogs will easily eat it! I have given the product to friends’ dogs and coworkers’ dogs whenever I hear of gas or diarrhea, and they have had success every time. If we go on a hike and my dogs drink some stagnant water, I will immediately give them Pet Flora when we get home, to make sure they don’t get sick. I will give my cats Pet Flora if I notice loose stool in my their litter boxes, and the diarrhea will be gone by the next day.

Since I typically can’t tell which cat has the upset stomach, I open a capsule or two and sprinkle it over their dry food. The first time I gave it to them, I was shocked at how quickly I had results! I think this is a product that every pet owner should have on hand, for the comfort of your animals, and to avoid expensive vet bills.

WEBINAR: Food & Supplements for Healthy Pets | Dr. Barbara Royal, DMV, CV

Determine what provisions you will need to shelter, feed and care for the pet, including the costs of such responsibilities. Consider checking with your local humane shelter or rescue organizations to aquire a pet that really NEEDS you! Select a source that is very knowledgeable of the particular type of animal you are interested in, keeps its animals clean and healthy, and shows true caring for the pet. Determine where the pet came from, and be very leery of animals that were obtained from more than 100 miles away. Acquire a pet if your living situation is likely to dramatically change within a short period of time, possibly preventing you from devoting the time, energy and overall care your pet needs.

Rely on information provided by pet stores; they are notorious for giving out BAD advice! Allow any salesperson to bully or badger you into acquiring a pet you’re not absolutely certain about. Acquire a pet from an individual or establishment that is clearly not taking good care of the animals by keeping them clean, healthy and happy. Even consider obtaining a pet from a source that provides no health guarantee or opportunity for you to have the pet checked by your vet. Allow your pet to be the type of animal it is; it is not human.

Take care of yourself; YOU are your pet’s most important asset in the world. Keep the pet and care for it well until YOU find it a good home. Be extremely diligent in finding someone TRULY appropriate for this pet; remember, if YOU hadn’t made YOUR mistake this pet might already have a good home. Expect to gain back ANY of the money you spent on the pet; your responsibility is to ensure that this living creature is well taken care of… and you deserve an expensive lesson for YOUR mistake!

Pawn the pet off on someone else who may be an equally poor prospective keeper.

Texas Department of State Health Services, Infectious Disease Control Unit > Pets

The state of Texas requires that dogs and cats be vaccinated against rabies by 4 months of age. The vaccination must be administered by a licensed veterinarian. When traveling with a dog or cat, have in your possession a rabies vaccination certificate that was signed by the veterinarian who administered the vaccination. For an animal to be considered currently vaccinated against rabies in rabies exposure situations, at least 30 days must have elapsed since the initial vaccination and the time elapsed since the most recent vaccination must not have exceeded the recommended interval for booster vaccination as established by the manufacturer. Local jurisdictions may require more frequent rabies vaccination intervals.

All dogs and cats 12 weeks of age or older that are being transported into Texas must have been vaccinated against rabies and not be overdue. Proof of vaccination must be provided via a rabies vaccination certificate signed by the attending veterinarian. Veterinarians in Texas are restricted to using vaccines approved by the United States Department of Agriculture; however, for entry purposes only, dogs and cats traveling into the state from another country may be inoculated against rabies with killed, modified live, or recombinant vaccine. Once in Texas, if a USDA-approved vaccine was not used or the veterinarian who administered it was not licensed to practice veterinary medicine in the US, compliance must be achieved. Although not required by law, it is recommended that livestock, domestic ferrets, and wolf-dog hybrids be vaccinated against rabies.

Again, check with your veterinarian about other available vaccines for these animals. Additional information is also available:Details on dog and cat entry requirementsTexas Administrative Code with rabies vaccination requirements.

Pets Benefit Human Health

Pets Benefit Human Health Many articles present pet ownership as a key to heart health, social support, and long life. In one study last year, researchers at the State University of New York at Buffalo found that married couples who owned pets had a lower heart rate and blood pressure whether at rest or when undergoing stressful tests than those without pets. Last May at a seminar in Portugal, the Federation of European Companion Animal Veterinary Surgeons emphasized the many health benefits of pet ownership. The health benefits of pet ownership are obvious for people who like animals, and most of us doat on friendly, clean, non-threatening animals. Dogs and cats are generally more affectionate and entertaining as pets than, say, fish or birds or ferrets, though many delight in those animals, too.

Nursing homes now arrange for pets to visit residents, and some facilities keep pets on the premises. The National Institutes of Health conducted a workshop almost 20 years ago on the health benefits of pets and pet-facilitated therapy. Pets are not medicine, and the scientific case for the benefits of pet ownership is not watertight. In 1995 in a review of research, Dr. Friedman said there’s no question that emotions have an impact on health, and that pets may help promote positive emotions.

You can’t really hand out pets and test their effects, as you might test the effects of a drug. Still, Dr. Friedman concludes that since heart disease and other stress-related diseases are so common in our society, it can’t hurt to recommend pets for their calming effect, at least for people who like animals and are willing and able to undertake the responsibility of owning one. Pets are not a panaceaas Dr. Friedman notes, they won’t cure cancer or heart disease.

Pet Health Community: Support Group

Have used the same vet for 4 years and he has doneok; i took my old tibetan spaniel in for grooming. When i picked her up her right leg was up to her stomach. I have spinal stenois and on that particularday i was in great pain and said nothing. For three weeks i spent time finding a combination offoods she would eat and helped her walk. At firstshe was very weak, but little by little she walked aroundon her three legs by the 6th week she was using alllegs. I called the vet to find out what they had done and heplayed dumb. So i got my records sent to another vet; when i wentto pick up meds for the dogs; they refused servicebecause they were friends with the other vet. I got the paperwork and called several vets and finallysettled on one i had used many years prior. I told thatvet what happened; in case he didnt want to provideme with a script for my dogs meds. He didnt mindand was concerned that the original vet had refusedto deal with the matter. What can i do to see that this doesnt happen anymorewith this vet and their calling to prevent vets from helping me out.
