Why Dogs Eat Grass: Causes and Prevention

First, rest assured that you’re not alone in your concern, especially if your dog is eating grass and vomiting. Sometimes pica indicates that your dog has some type of nutritional deficiency, though it is often simply a sign of boredom, especially when practiced by puppies and younger dogs. Dogs eating grass is actually quite common and this form of pica does not usually cause too many problems. One small-scale study of 49 dog owners whose dogs had regular access to grass and other plants found that 79% of the dogs had eaten plants at some time. Another survey about plant-eating dogs found that grass was the most commonly eaten plant.

Some people propose that dogs might turn to eating grass when they don’t feel well as a way to make themselves vomit, and then feel better. Others dispute this idea, on the basis that dogs are not proven to be smart enough to decide to treat an upset stomach by eating grass. Evidence suggests that most dogs that eat grass aren’t unwell beforehand, or at least they don’t seem so. Grass-eating doesn’t usually lead to throwing up – less than 25% of dogs that eat grass vomit regularly after grazing. Three days after putting the dog on a high-fiber diet, the owner reported that the dog stopped eating grass entirely.

If you suspect your dog is eating grass because he’s bored, it might be beneficial to be sure he’s getting enough exercise. To make sure the plants in and around the area where your dog is eating grass aren’t dangerous, check the ASPCA’s Animal Poison Control Center web site, which maintains a list of toxic and non-toxic plants.

Healthy Pets, Happy Owners: Health and Wellness Product Development in Pet Care

Owners are increasingly unwilling to compromise on the quality of food they feed their pets. In this context, the pet food market is increasingly coming to resemble the baby food market, particularly in North America. The types of protein used in dog and cat food are likely to become more diverse. Protein-rich alternatives to meat, such as insects and algae, are likely to slowly but steadily percolate into the mainstream market. The growth of internet retailing has made it easier for pet food start-ups to leapfrog bricks-and-mortar retailers and reach consumers directly, challenging the dominance of incumbents and accelerating the pace of innovation in health and wellness.

Lengthening life expectancy for dogs and cats and the increased prevalence of overweight and obese pets are major drivers of demand for health and wellness pet food and pet care products. With such gadgets as activity trackers and wearables going mainstream in the consumer electronics market, similar devices are becoming part of the day-to-day lives of a growing number of pets. Until fairly recently, it would take years for an innovation in the fmcg market to make the leap into pet food, but increasingly this transition can be measured in months. Many increasingly equate simplicity with naturalness, so shorter ingredient lists are becoming synonymous with quality in the minds of some consumers.

For Pet's Sake News for 05-14-2018

A positron emission tomography scan is an imaging test that allows your doctor to check for diseases in your body. The scan uses a special dye that has radioactive tracers. When highlighted under a PET scanner, the tracers help your doctor to see how well your organs and tissues are working. The PET scan can measure blood flow, oxygen use, glucose metabolism, and much more. Your doctor may order a PET scan to inspect the blood flow, oxygen intake, and metabolism of your organs and tissues.

The PET scan involves radioactive tracers, but the exposure to harmful radiation is minimal. If you’re pregnant, think you may be pregnant, or you’re breast-feeding, you shouldn’t get a PET scan. There are times that, in order to get a more thorough image, a PET scan is combined with a CT scan. If additional radioactive tracer is needed for the CT scan, it can be harmful to people who have kidney disease or who have elevated creatinine level from other medications they are already taking. You should tell your doctor if you’ve experienced an allergic reaction during a PET scan before.

Your doctor will provide you with complete instructions for how to prepare for your PET scan. Your body needs time to absorb the tracers, so you’ll wait about an hour before the scan begins.

What to Feed Your Pet Rabbit

A nice mix of hay, vegetables, pellets, as well as fresh water will make your rabbit healthy and happy. Fresh hay should make up the bulk of your rabbit’s diet and needs to be readily available at all times. Adult rabbits can eat timothy, grass, and oat hays, while younger rabbits should be fed alfalfa. Hay is important for rabbits because it provides the essential fiber needed for good digestive health and it helps wear down a rabbit’s teeth for good dental health. Placing hay at one end of a litter box will also encourage the use of the litter box, as rabbits tend to eat hay and poop at the same time.

Always wash your vegetables thoroughly before feeding them to your rabbit. Feed new vegetables in small quantities until you can judge if your rabbit reacts well to them. Do not feed rabbits the leaves from houseplants as many are poisonous to rabbits. For a full list of poisonous plants, visit the Sacramento House Rabbit Society’s page on the subject. Fresh water must always be available to your rabbit.

If your rabbit does not seem to be drinking enough water you can leave the vegetables fairly wet when you present them. Do not feed your rabbit items high in carbohydrates like breads, crackers, pasta, pretzels, cookies, chips, or cereal.

How pets improve your health

Companion pets do more than make us smile; they’re actually good for our health. From reduced incidence of depression, lower blood pressure and overall stress reduction, a four-legged friend might be the best health plan money can’t buy. Numerous studies have demonstrated that the average companion animal can deliver extraordinary physical health results. In some cases, having a pet can improve your health more than medication alone – or at all. It’s no wonder then that more than half of households overall have a pet in the family.

Maybe that’s why dogs and cats are associated with improved mental health, too. They simply love us, as is, and ask for nothing more in return. Reduced stress and incidence of depression; elderly people are less depressed if they own a pet. Recent widows who own pets use less medication and have fewer symptoms of any type of illness than those that don’t own a pet. Dog owners report being as emotionally connected to their pet as to their closest family members.

Just a half hour in the company of a dog improves feelings of happiness and well-being. Perhaps it’s the military personnel and veterans who adopt through our program that sum it up best: pets give us a purpose in life, another reason to live.

Learning About Canine Vet Care

If you have a new puppy you need to make sure it gets all the right vaccinations and regular checkups from the veterinarian. You also have to remember to do some things on your own at home. One thing you may neglect to think about is your puppy’s paws. Below are four tips to keep your puppy’s paws free from infection and injury. Trim the Fur Make sure you keep the fur trimmed between your puppies pads often. If your furry family member is scratching and biting at himself excessively, it is important to determine the cause of his misery sooner than later. A persistent state of itchiness is a source of discomfort for your dog or cat, and his constant attempts to relieve the itch can lead to further complications. Parasitic Pests Flea infestations are the most common cause of itching and scratching in dogs and cats. Your new chinchilla can develop a wide range of health conditions, including familiar ones like diarrhea. Here are four things chinchilla owners need to know about chinchillas. Why do chinchillas get diarrhea? Chinchillas can get diarrhea for many reasons, ranging from minor to serious. Dietary changes are a common cause of diarrhea, so avoid straying from the recommended diet of hay and pellets. Unlike other small pets, such as guinea pigs and rabbits, chinchillas shouldn’t eat greens as they will get diarrhea from these foods.

Pets and Animals

Remember, during a disaster what’s good for you is good for your pet, so get them ready today. If you leave your pets behind, they may be lost, injured – or worse. For public health reasons, many emergency shelters cannot accept pets. Find pet friendly hotels along your evacuation route and keep a list in your pet’s emergency kit. Locate a veterinarian or animal hospital in the area where you may be seeking temporary shelter, in case your pet needs medical care. Have your pet microchipped and make sure that you not only keep your address and phone number up-to-date, but that you also include contact info for an emergency contact outside of your immediate area. If you are unable to return to your home right away, you may need to board your pet. Most boarding kennels, veterinarians and animal shelters will need your pet’s medical records to make sure all vaccinations are current. If you have no alternative but to leave your pet at home, there are some precautions you must take, but remember that leaving your pet at home alone can place your animal in great danger!Tips for Large Animals. Include basic survival items and items to keep your pet happy and comfortable. At least three days of water specifically for your pets. Talk to your veterinarian about microchipping and enrolling your pet in a recovery database. Including a pet first aid reference book is a good idea too. The carrier should be large enough for your pet to stand, turn around and lie down. Familiar items, such as treats, toys and bedding can help reduce stress for your pet.

Health Risks: Pet Waste: Department of Health

Pet waste left on the street or lawn does not just go away or fertilize the grass. Rain washes pet waste down storm drains and into waterways like rivers, bays, and beaches. Pet waste is very toxic-the Environmental Protection Agency estimates that waste produced by just 100 dogs in two or three days can contain enough bacteria to temporarily close a bay to swimming and shellfishing. Pet waste also provides a nitrogen source for algae blooms, which deplete the water of oxygen and can make people and animals sick. When walking your pet, take a bag with you for quick waste pick-up. It helps to keep a supply of bags near your dog leash and to tie the bags on the leash if you don’t have a pocket or pack. Consider re-using plastic newspaper bags or bread bags. Use the bag to pick up the waste, and tie it closed. When at home, long-handled pooper scoopers available at pet stores make it easy to pick up after pets without stooping over. It may help to double bag dog waste or kitty litter. Do not throw waste near or into storm drains, and do not dump kitty litter outside. State parks and picnic areas require pet owners to clean up and properly dispose of animal waste. MoreSome cities and towns have fines for not picking up waste on streets, in parks, or in dog parks. Don’t let your pet pollute, and encourage those around you to be responsible pet owners, too.
