Healthy Pets Northwest – The natural alternative for Pet Food and Supplies
Portland is in the middle of construction season, and so it seems is Healthy Pets Northwest. This season we have been primarily working our Hawthorne and Multnomah Village stores, but have not forgotten Woodstock. Hawthorne Store Reset Customers coming into our Hawthorne store are noticing some big changes in the store’s layout and use of space. We have removed the old grocery store type of fixtures and replaced them with industrial pipe frames and wood shelves. Displays in the middle of the store have been updated to make them more functional and appealing.
We have changes coming so please stop in and check them out. Multnomah Village Updates At our Multnomah Village store the first new item most customers will see is sign above the front door. While it is new for us, we are glad to say that it is actually recycled from the Alberta store. Don’t be surprised if you show up one day and the store is a different color because we plan to have the building painted in August. Woodstock Deep Freeze Freezer space for raw foods and frozen treats is very tight at the Woodstock store.
To alleviate the crowding, we will be adding a three-door, glass-front freezer. It will give us a lot more space to meet the growing demand for raw pet foods.
Keeping Your Aging Pet Healthy
A senior dog or cat should have a physical examination by a veterinarian at least twice a year, and blood work at least annually. Increased sleeping is often a clue that the dog or cat is not feeling well. Metabolic diseases are often the cause of increased sleeping, as is cardiac disease. A dog who is refusing walks is most likely not feeling well, and there’s no reason his/her age should prevent us from trying to help. Everything from hormonal imbalances, to kidney disease, to inflammatory bowel disease, to cancer, can be associated with changes in food intake.
Related to food intake is the issue of water intake. Older dogs and cats don’t change their water intake just because they’re old-or bored. Kidney disease can be associated with increased water intake at the beginning, and decreased water intake later on. Increased water intake is associated with diabetes, hormone gland dysfunction and infections. Decreased water intake can be associated with heart disease, cancer and pain.
Retinal hemorrhage is associated with high blood pressure, as well as certain viral diseases. Regarding hearing in the older dog or cat, the cause is indeed most likely age-related.

About Pet Rats
Many health problems can be prevented by making sure to feed your rat the best diet possible, by providing optimum housing, plenty of exercise, mental enrichment, excellent veterinary care and lots of love. While I wish I could say rats are low maintenance and hardly ever have medical problems, I have not found that to be the case. The last six of my rats have all had medical problems that were completely atypical, causing my veterinarians to consult with experts in rat diseases and medical treatments. Many people aren’t prepared for how much it costs to take care of their pets. I used to work at the front desk in a veterinary hospital that saw exotic pets including rats.
I would guess I spend at least $500 per rat each year on exams, medicine and surgery when it’s needed.
