Le BARF | Meilleure régime pour chiens & chats ?

Animals play an important role in many people’s lives and often help with therapy, rehab, etc. Learn more about the possible benefits of pet companionship.

This article summarizes what is known and not known about how animals help improve the health and well-being of people, and what the implications might be for helping people who don’t have pets of their own. Some research studies have found that people who have a pet have healthier hearts, stay home sick less often, make fewer visits to the doctor, get more exercise, and are less depressed. The social support provided by a pet might also encourage more social interactions with people, reducing feelings of isolation or loneliness. Researchers found that people who said they had a pet in both 1996 and 2001 had the fewest doctor visits, followed by people who had acquired a pet by 2001; the group of people who did not have a pet at either time had the highest number of doctor visits. More research is needed on the connection between allergies, asthma, and pets, but it is possible that the impact of having pets on allergies may depend on the age of the person at the time they are exposed to an animal as well as the type of pet.

Some people are more attached to their pets than others and those feelings could influence the impact of the pet on the person’s health. Most evidence on the benefits of having a pet comes from surveys of current health, but that means it is impossible to know if a person is in good health because she has a pet or if he is more likely to get a pet because he is in good health. The German study described above suggests that having a pet for a longer period of time is more beneficial to your health; but it is also possible that people with pets have less time to spare to go to the doctor or are less concerned about their own health, especially minor ailments. People who love their pets are likely to want to let researchers know that their pets help improve their lives. How much time the person spends with his or her pet could be strongly influenced by the type of pet and in turn could influence the health benefits of having a pet.

Researchers have also used animals to temporarily provide companionship to children with health or mental health problems, or elderly people who may not have the energy or resources for a live-in pet. People who have pets know that there are many benefits to having a companion animal, but we do not yet know under what circumstances those benefits are most likely.

Dog health

If the dog suffers from any of these, a Vet should be consulted immediately and steps should be taken towards the treatment of the dog. Most of these diseases are spread directly from dog to dog, while others require a vector such as a tick or mosquito. Bacterial diseases in dogs are usually not contagious from dog to dog; instead they are usually the result of wound colonization, opportunistic infections secondary to decreased resistance, or secondary to other conditions. These examples are not considered infectious diseases because they do not satisfy Koch’s postulates – for example Staphylococcus intermedius, a commonly isolated bacteria from skin infections in dogs, would not cause pyoderma when introduced to a healthy dog. There are some bacteria that are contagious from dog to dog.

It has been diagnosed in dogs in all 48 states of the continental U.S. Ehrlichia canis, which causes canine ehrlichiosis, and Rickettsia rickettsii, which causes Rocky Mountain spotted fever, are both spread by the American dog tick, Dermacentor variabilis, and the brown dog tick, Rhipicephalus sanguineous. Although dogs do not seem to be as susceptible to such diseases as humans, similar rickettsial diseases have been spread by dogs to humans through such mechanisms as a dog killing an infected rabbit, then shaking itself off in the house near enough to its owners to fatally infect most of the family. Treatment of an infected dog is difficult, involving an attempt to poison the healthy worm with arsenic compounds without killing the weakened dog, and frequently does not succeed. Although dog treats carry high benefits for dogs’ teeth, they can also be a source of problems when given excessively.

Dog treats are more likely to be linked to obesity in old dogs, since in their old age they are less likely to be active and exercising. While some think that vitamins and supplements are necessary and can improve the health of a dog, others believe that they are unnecessary and may harm the dog. It is not essential for a female dog to either experience a heat cycle or have puppies before spaying, and likewise, a male dog does not need the experience of mating before neutering.

Pet vaccination

Such as the kennel cough vaccine, still need to be done annually, but researchers now believe there are good reasons why core vaccines should be triennial. An association between injection of adjuvanted vaccines against both the leukaemia virus and rabies and the development of injection-site sarcomas in cats was soon confirmed. In 2007, the World Small Animal Veterinary Association began advising vets to continue vaccinating pets with core vaccines, but to reduce their frequency to minimise the potential for adverse reactions. In Australia, the AVA issued a revised policy in June 2009 stating that in most cases core vaccines need not be administered any more frequently than triennially, or even less so under certain circumstances, such as if your pet is kept inside and less likely to come into contact with these viruses. Vaccine labelling – the Australian regulator, the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority, can’t change vaccine labels to the new three-year recommendation without data being provided by the manufacturer to prove a longer duration of immunity.

Vets aren’t obliged to follow recommendations on vaccine labels – state and territory legislation allows vets to use vaccines at whatever interval they determine is best, provided they obtain informed consent from the pet owner. Discuss with your vet the most suitable vaccination regime for your pet. To reduce the risk of tumours, feline adjuvanted vaccines should not be injected into your cat’s back. Core vaccines are those that should be administered to every puppy or kitten, and should be used in adult animals in a manner that maintains robust protection for life. Non-core vaccines are those that don’t need to be administered to every animal.

This could be because the disease(s) they protect against are relatively mild, the animal has little chance of exposure to the disease, the vaccine causes adverse effects, making the risk-benefit ratio unattractive, or there is insufficient scientific information to allow an informed decision about the need, efficacy and/or safety of the vaccine. If non-core vaccines are required, they may need to be administered annually.

Pros and Cons of Pet Insurance

Although the pet insurance field has grown tremendously in recent years, it only covers a small percentage of the total number of pets in the U.S. Market research firm Packaged Facts estimates about 705,000 pets are insured nationwide. Susan Arts, Pethealth vice president of marketing, says the market should continue to grow as pet owners become more educated. That’s what happened to Natalie Sternberg, an Angie’s List member in Chicago. When she adopted her wire fox terrier and Italian greyhound mix puppy, Floyd, in 2007, he swallowed four pennies, a screw and a washer in the first week.

Healthy Pets in Columbus, OH with Reviews

Even though you’re not the one treated by the vet, whoever your animal sees is obviously your decision. Speak to your friends and family about vets who’ve treated their pets. Look for a vet who’s close to your house, as many animals don’t like being in the car for a long time. Whether you have pet health insurance or not, it’s still worth checking what the regular costs for typical procedures are at the vet’s office. The type of animal you own should play a part in which vet you choose as well.

Some vets have insight to diseases that affect both humans and animals. Regulatory medicine: These vets work closely with diseases rather than animals themselves. In some cases, they may assist vets in surgery or restrain struggling animals during tests or lab work. During a routine veterinary visit, the vet will probably begin by asking you if there have been any changes in your pet’s behavior or habits. The vet will then take your pet’s vitals, like weight, temperature, pulse and respiration rate, and perform a physical examination of the pet.

Keep note of your animal’s shedding habits so you can let the vet know if anything seems abnormal. Before you take out a pet insurance policy, you’ll want to meet with your vet to go over what he or she thinks your animal should be covered for.

Pet Health: Hidden Dangers for Pets at Home

Make sure you keep these household items away from your pets to keep them happy and healthy. Call your vet as soon as possible if you think your pet has ingested lily. Holiday poinsettias are also dangerous for pets, though not as worrisome as the lily. Chocolate might have plenty of health benefits for humans, but it’s a harmful food for pets. Keep little ones from giving chocolate to pets and do your best to supervise.

Too much sugar can give your pet a bellyache, but worse, if wrappers are swallowed, your pet risks tearing of the esophagus or intestines. Here are some other foods that can be seriously hazardous to your pet. Spoiled hard boiled eggs, if ingested, can make pets ill. Pets who attempt to eat these garlands and garnishes can choke, or lethally damage their intestines. Christmas: Keep pets out of tree water, and be attentive when they show interest in ornaments, decoration hooks, ribbon, and Styrofoam.

Small, brightly colored toys hold the same appeal for pets as they do children. Petside’s advice is to keep small toys in a place safely hidden from pets.

Keeping Your Dog Healthy

All good dog owners want to keep their dogs healthy. Help keep your dog on the path to wellness with these dog health guidelines. If your dog has special needs, a chronic health condition or other illness, comply with your vet’s recommendations. If you can develop a good connection with your vet, it can lead to long-term benefit for you and your dog. Proper nutrition is fundamental for keeping all dogs healthy.

Choose a high-quality dog food made by a reputable company, or learn about homemade diets. A sudden change in dog foods can cause diarrhea or even vomiting, so switch over gradually unless otherwise directed by your vet. Many dog owners underestimate their dogs’ exercise needs in relation to keeping their dog healthy. If you feed your dog a healthy diet, it should give her plenty of energy. Your dog may have special needs due to health conditions such as allergies.

Your dog may exhibit a variety of signs that indicate a health problem. If your dog is displaying signs of illness, contact your vet right away.

Pet Insurance Home

If your pet becomes ill or has an accident, it could cost hundreds or thousands of dollars for treatment. Pet insurance helps with veterinary costs when your pet needs treatment. It can lower your out-of-pocket costs so you can avoid a financial crisis while keeping your pet healthy. Many people think that elderly pets need the most veterinary care. Research shows that young pets are more likely to need unexpected treatment.

Young, rambunctious pets have a way of getting into trouble. With pet insurance you do not have to choose between paying a vet bill and paying the electric bill. Medical advancements have made treating pets much more effective. This means that the right care can increase your pet’s lifespan. Most policies cover diagnostic testing, dental treatment, prescription medications and more.

Since pets age faster than humans, they benefit from exams every six months. Don’t assume an indoor cat doesn’t need a regular exam, or that a seemingly healthy pet can sit a year out-animals can be very good at hiding pain and disease. Use the wellness examination as a chance to discuss your pet’s well being. In older pets, your veterinarian may recommend monitoring organ function and overall health with blood and urine testing, blood pressure monitoring, radiographs, and ultrasound. Pet obesity is reaching epidemic proportions-an estimated one out of every two pets is overweight or obese.

A slight adjustment to your pet’s diet or exercise regimen can make a huge difference, so ask your veterinarian for your pet’s target weight. Dental problems can cause pain, infection, and inflammation and take years off your pet’s life. Even if your pet spends most of his time indoors, he can still pick up diseases from these sneaky pests that can fly, crawl, or hitchhike on you to get inside your house. While some vaccines, like rabies, are required by law because of the risk to humans, others may be necessary for your pet’s lifestyle. Your veterinarian will know what’s best for your pet.

It could save your pet’s life by decreasing the risk of life-threatening diseases like pyometra and mammary, uterine, and testicular cancer. Pet Vet Hospital and Wellness Center has the latest in ultrasound technology, therapeutic laser therapy, advanced dentistry such as root canals, oral digital radiography, highly educated and experienced staff members with a unique approach to keeping healthy pets healthy.

Healthy Paws Pet Insurance Reviews

Healthy Paws is one of our favorite plans due to its great value and coverage. Pros Unlimited coverage: Coverage and benefits are unlimited under a Healthy Paws insurance plan. Healthy Paws offers unlimited coverage per visit, year, or over the lifetime of your pet’s medical condition. Hereditary and congential conditions covered: Healthy Paws covers your pets’ hereditary and congenital conditions, including hip dysplasia, so long as your pets are enrolled before the age of six, and symptoms haven’t shown up yet. Cons Healthy Paws does not cover the examination fee portion of your dog or cat’s visit to the vet’s office.

There is a one-time enrollment fee of $25.Healthy Paws Pet Insurance Plan Policy. Healthy Paws only offers customers one plan, and pet parents get to select from three levels of annual deductibles and reimbursement levels. Among the benefits provided by a Healthy Paws pet health plan are hospitalization, diagnostic testing, supplies, surgeries, and prescription medication. Healthy Paws only covers accidents and illnesses, so long as they’re not pre-existing. Some standard fine print: There is a waiting period of fifteen days after the pet policy effective date, which begins after midnight on the day of your enrollment.

During this period, any injuries or accidents that occur will not be covered by Healthy Paws unfortunately – this is generally a standard limitation in pet insurance plans, but not many pet parents are aware of this. Healthy Paws requires a recent clinical evaluation to establish the baseline health of its pets.

Special Care Instructions from Partners for Healthy Pets

Healthy pets sometimes euthanized for owners’ convenience: veterinary groups

Animal advocates are calling for an end to the euthanization of healthy pets purely for their owners’ convenience, a practice Canadian veterinarians acknowledge is an unfortunate fact of their profession. Veterinarians’ associations say fewer vets are willing to perform convenience euthanasia, but the profession does not prohibit it. Dr. Troy Bourque, president of the CVMA, said he is certain some vets still perform convenience euthanasia. Camille Labchuk, an animal rights lawyer and executive director of Animal Justice, a Toronto-based advocacy organization, says it should be.

Dr. Frank Richardson, president of the Nova Scotia Veterinary Medicine Association, said it is up to vets how to handle conversations about euthanasia. Mary-Clare McLaren, a manager at Carnegy Animal Hospital, said reasons can vary for putting pets down. The Carnegy clinic asks no questions of people who bring their pets in to be put down, she said. Dr.

Paul Kendall, director of the Halifax Veterinary Hospital Group, comprised of three hospitals and about 40 medical staff, said they will not put an animal down for the owner’s convenience. Kendall said he understands why convenience euthanasia happens, and won’t criticize veterinarians who perform it. Angela Welburn, the operator of Integrity’s Haven Equine Rescue Centre in Chester Basin, N.S., said she started her animal rescue partly because she once met a woman at a Halifax vet clinic who wanted to put down an elderly dog so her kids could get a puppy. She also understands that animals with mental or behavioural issues need to be euthanized at times. Dr.

Bernard Rollin – a professor of philosophy, animal sciences and biomedical sciences at Colorado State University who has written extensively on animal rights and ethics – said there needs to be more emphasis on ethical training in veterinarian schools.

Was walking past Seaholm after a jog with my pups and happened to see they had a self serve dog wash… Decided to pop in on a whim and treat the boys to nice bath that wouldn’t end with me being soak…ed and covered in dog hair for once… Totally worth the 32 bucks. Staff was great, and even offered to help if I needed it. Everyone else was just as helpful and they even gave me a few treats to coax the dogs into the tub.

S are available for pre-bath brushing… The soap and conditione. R they provide left Phineas and Scout SUPER soft, and smelling great… They also provide ear cleaner, toothpaste. A lavender scented holistic flea and tick spray, as well as a wide array of scented spray on conditione.

Y, a few towels and a hilarious blow dryer The only issue I really had was that when I did use the blow dryer, it kicked up quite a bit of hair in the room and made me feel like I was in one of those game show cash grab booths, but instead of $100 bills, it was just dog hair :/That probably has more to do with me washing 2 dogs, and drying them both off at the very end instead of when they were still in the sink. Food and treats were also priced really well too, so we picked up a few things as a reward for all the good behavior.

876-0455 Very clean and great place for most common pets dog and cat. Sometimes offer more than needed but only for the best care of your beloved pet. Especially a woman with short black hair who was the one who refunded me my money, and even offered to pay for my cat’s groom at Pet Smart tomorrow to try to fix this mess. As of today I’ve collected my pets file and closed our account. Phenomenal vet office, I would 100% recommend Healthy Pets of Hilliard to anyone in search of a new vet.

With a breaking heart, I took her our AMAZING vet, Dr. Kelleher at Healthy Pets of Rome Hilliard. Grateful for a vet and staff who are so informative and who care so much abt US AND our pets. I called he precious vet and had them speak with healthy pets of Rome. The old vet confirmed to healthy pets of Rome that they were up to date and it was stated on the record that they received.

We love Healthy Pets of Rome Hilliard! They consistently give awesome care to my two dogs. You can tell everyone at HP truly cares about all pets as if they were their own. Will always be a part of this family as long as I have pets!

Healthy Pets in Union City, CA with Reviews

Oregon Veterinary Medical Association

Just as obesity is a problem in human health, obesity in our pets is a serious health issue. Extra pounds place an extra burden on virtually all of an overweight pet’s organ systems, as well as its joints and ligaments. Joint problems can lead to an inactive lifestyle, which only perpetuates the problem. Sometimes we give our pets treats just because we love them. We may even give them some of our food, or make sure that our dog or cat never has an empty food bowl.

Simply cutting back on the amount of food you feed your pet may also decrease the amount of essential vitamins and minerals it receives. Your veterinarian can help you choose the right food for your pet. A small change in your pet’s weight can have big consequences. Treats should be given sparingly and should not make up more than 10% of your pet’s daily calories. Just as in humans, obesity is sometimes a symptom of an underlying medical problem and may not be successfully addressed until any medical issues are dealt with.

If you think your pet is overweight, talk with your veterinarian, who can give you advice on a proper diet and exercise program. Your veterinarian will determine if there are any other medical problems contributing to your pet’s obesity and give you advice on how fast your pet should lose weight.

Information for Pet Owners: Department of Health

If you own a pet, there are steps you should take to keep your pets, yourself, and those around you healthy. Rain can wash pet waste from your lawn and the streets into rivers, bays, and beaches, causing illness. Salmonella may be found in the feces of some pets, especially those with diarrhea, and people can become infected if they do not wash their hands after contact with pets or pet feces. Hand washing can also help you avoid allergic reactions to pets. Vaccinate your pets against rabies, and take precautions if your pet is bitten or scratched by another animal.

More If your pet has a history of biting, consider obedience training and use a leash and/or muzzle when you take your pet outside. Protect your pets and yourself from tick-borne illnesses. Take steps to avoid ticks when walking or playing with pets outside. Do not let your pets swim or play in water experiencing an algae bloom. If someone in your home has asthma, keep pets out of bedrooms and outdoors as often as possible, bathe pets weekly, and clean pet bedding and litter every week.

Don’t spread lead. If you are doing painting, repair, or home improvement on a house built before 1978, keep pets out of the work area to avoid spreading lead dust or chips into other areas. Ask friends or relatives outside your area whether they could shelter your pets in an emergency, or contact hotels and motels to inquire about their pet policies.

4041 Attucks Dr, Powell, OH

Our dog came here when he was healthy as well and so we used their boarding services and vaccinations. Their service to our family in our dogs final hours was exceptional. I’ve also recently learned a friend had a similar issue with the same facility and Dr. Shoroosh in which her dog was improperly medicated, consequently magnifying her pets behavioral issues. Dr.

Lauren O’Conner is the most incredible human being/Veterinarian on the planet! I presently live in California and bring my dog back to Powell to see her. Long story short, my dog was hit by a car and they performed the surgery and did his rehab from the surgery as well. Jenny, The head of the rehabilitation side of things, is a fantastic person and you can tell she truly cares for all the dogs she works with. My dog had to have the same surgery performed a second time because of a freak occurrence and they did both the rehab and surgery free of charge.

He’s a fantastic diagnostician! I took my dog is with the symptoms of lethargy, lip color change and generally acting weird and within minutes he figured out what was wrong. My dog was boarded at Healthy Pets of Wedgewood over Easter weekend. Our dog is diabetic, so boarding her at the vet seemed like a good idea. Turns out my dog picked up a roundworm parasite at this facility.

HELL NO! I will never again take my dogs to any facility that lies to me and makes my pets sick.

Caught on camera: Boy steals puppy from Mt. Healthy pet store

Healthy Pets Animal Hospital

Recently our dog injured his back leg and was in incredible pain. Everything was very transparent, with an eye towards keeping my dog healthy but not overcharging us for services. They even call to check up on our dog the next day! We would highly recommend these folks to anyone looking for an honest, knowledgeable vet office. After spending nearly half a thousand dollars this place refused to return my dog unless I paid a remaining 13 dollar balance I asked if I could pay later but they told me no so I told them I would go to the bank and return.

They sent out a woman with a paper of post care info and attempted to FORCE me to listen before returning my dog which was completely unacceptable to me so I again demanded my dog be returned with no further discussion – this time increasing my colorful language to get the point across. She takes such good care of my dog and always calls to check up after a visit. After about 10 mins, I went back inside and checked on when I could get my dog in and that he was really struggling to hold on. 10 more minutes later a receptionist came out to me and said that they could have seen me and my dog 20 mins earlier but didn’t know where I was. We took our dog here from when she was a puppy until she was almost 4. It wasn’t even the issue of the dog needing to go elsewhere, it was that in a state of near panic with my furry friend’s health at stake, I was dismissed as if I were stupid to have taken my dog to her vet when she needed medical attention.

I am new to the state of Washington and I am very picky on who I take my Baby Girl to, someone told me about this place so I made an appointment to go check them out and same day ended up having my dog looked at by them because of how welcoming they were and how comfortable my dog was with being in there when normally she panics with any vet she goes into, but here she actually did very well and all,the employees there actually did great with her and took there time with her Whitch is something I really loved about this place. It is fine as a waiting room, but while I was there some poor woman had to put her dog down and then had to go back into the waiting room filled with happy dogs to wait to pay.

Heroes For Healthy Pets to the rescue

If you support healthy pets and are doing something to take action to minimize the risk of spreading infectious disease, you ought to be a superhero, according to the Heroes For Healthy Pets initiative. Your education superskill will reach veterinary professionals as well as those employed in allied professions, such dog day care centers and boarding facilities, as well as groomers, dog trainers, and dog walkers-and it can save lives. The program, which offers two education modules on infectious disease that are RACE-approved for CE credits, is sponsored by Merck Animal Health, and is co-sponsored by the National Association of Veterinary Technicians in America, the International Boarding & Pet Services Association, and Pet Sitters International. Passing the two modules and a quiz will identify you as a Hero For Healthy Pets. Many educational opportunities exist, but what’s truly unique and transformational about Heroes For Healthy Pets is that the heroes aren’t limited to the veterinary profession.

Some boarding facilities closed their doors during the height of the initial outbreak of H3N2 CIV in Chicago, but others likely contributed to the outbreak, as they didn’t have appropriate protocols. Some boarding facilities were forced to close-though at least they were honest about the flu outbreak in their facilities. All this could be prevented by following the American Animal Hospital Association’s vaccination guidelines, which state that dogs in group settings, like those that visit kennels or dog shows, should receive vaccinations for both strains of dog flu. Pet owners are encouraged to look for the Heroes For Healthy Pets logo-and consistently see the integration of the same logo at veterinary practices to kennels to day care facilities to dog training facilities to shelters. Overall, most clients will listen to veterinary expertise, Ward said.

The Heroes for Healthy pets modules are free at heroes4healthypets.com. Access to a podcast series on infectious diseases hosted by Courtney Campbell, DVM

The American Veterinary Medical Foundation is proud to be home to Partners for Healthy Pets, a profession-wide initiative comprised of animal health companies, non-profit organizations, state veterinary medical associations and colleges of veterinary medicine. Partners for Healthy Pets’ mission is to ensure that pets receive the preventive healthcare they deserve through regular visits to a veterinarian. While the percentage of preventable illnesses is on the rise in our beloved pets, the percentage of America’s 130 million cats and dogs who visit a veterinarian for a regular checkup is on the decline. Partners for Healthy Pets provides information and resources for veterinary healthcare teams to help promote preventive healthcare for all patients in their practices. The result is healthier patients and healthier practices!

A yearly checkup is the best way to keep your pet as healthy as possible – because it’s much easier to prevent disease than to treat it. Whether your dog frolics at the park with all the neighborhood pups, or the closest your cat gets to the great outdoors is a sunny windowsill, every pet needs to see their vet – at least once a year! Partners for Healthy Pets offers a website for pet owners that brings awareness to the importance of regular checkups for their pets and answers common pet owner questions about preventive healthcare. Partners for Healthy Pets is committed to a vision of improved overall health for pets. PHP provides tools that help communicate the value and benefit of preventive care, enhance the veterinary client relationship, and improve the overall quality of preventive healthcare provided for patients.
